Title: Comments & Complements from readers and players
Post by: Jen on August 29, 2007, 04:33:28 AM
I thought I'd provide a thread where non RPG players (those just enjoying the read) and RPG participants can talk about stories being written or the past or future audio productionsâ€"if you have comments we'd love to hear them. Players, if you have anything you want to convey to your fellow players, regarding their posts (complements or questions),  tack them them here.  ;)

I like the exchange between Tain and Manrique. Looking forward to reading about the jungle adventure. I also enjoyed reading about Holoworldâ€"Rick and Iceman.
Great work X...I like the ideas you have. Keep them coming... Nice work everyone.

Shore leave should be wrapping up soon, so prepare your characters for the next season...It'll be an action packed adventure for sure. You don't have to come back to the ship just yet, but know that we'll have to leave Earth fairly soon. We'll let you know in advance how soon that will happen.

I would like to discuss RPG ideas via Skype bi-weeklishâ€" if anyone else likes that idea let me know.

Another thought, if you know anyone that you think would enjoy the RPG...send them over to check it out. Word of mouth is the best advertising. :)

Thank you. It looks like there is an abnormal number of telepaths on board for this season, but any character who can masquerade as a Tal'Shiar operative for as long as mine has can surely survive on a Federation starship, telepaths or no. Also remember that he has survived on Federation starships before (during the war), and surely he ran into a couple Betazoids then without much trouble.

A Cardassian who's been living as a Romulan for several years and is now posing as a Vulcan. . .crazy.  It's very cool 3 Ducks.

There was an idea I had that I mentioned to Jen or Kenny (I can't remember who) that had to do with MIA/KIA characters. I'm not sure it'll work, but I thought I'd throw it out there to the group, so maybe there could be some bit of discussion and consensus about it. And maybe it needs its own thread, but maybe not.

The idea is this: if someone is planning on leaving or abandoning their character or wants their character to die/disappear for any reason, you might privately contact (in the forums, not the game) one of the known spies and ask them to "take care of" your character.

My reasoning behind it is this: if a character disappears because of abandonment or whatever, the rest of the players (or at least the moderators) have to find some way to explain away the death or disappearance. If the spies got involved, it would do two things.
1) It would spread around some of the labor, so that the moderators wouldn't need to spend extra time editing someone out; the spies could just write it into one of their posts. Two birds with one stone.
2) If a meaningful character (non-NPC) gets knocked off "mysteriously," it creates motivations for the other characters to push the story line forward, it helps foster a thicker plotline, and it might give players something to do (like a puzzle to solve) if the action or posting gets slow.

Of course, not everyone is going to require this service (very few will). Nor would it be a good idea for spies to kill off every player that goes MIA/KIA--people do die of natural causes. But it widens our options, at least for this season.

Any thoughts on this?

That's a topic for the "Think Tank" section of the forum (it's in OOC). Really, this thread is meant for compliments for other writers. But I agree with you. In fact, there are two in the MIA section that I know are never coming back (one asked me to kill his character off). Maybe I will write them into the story and send you their names so you can off them at your leisure.  :)

The problem is that typically, people who don't play anymore just stop writing and never respond to PMs about what they want us to do with their character (they just go AWOL). On rare occasion, we've had someone ask us to keep their character safe for them. Only two people asked us to kill their characters. One of them was killed in the line of duty, the other never made an appearance so I didn't write them out of the story...none of us would know who they are anyway. Most of the time the writers just never come back. The MIA/KIA section of our forum is for folks who may want to pick out a character that no one is using anymoreâ€"not sure we want them all killed, but feel free to PM those people who's characters are in that section and ask them if they want their character's offed.

Last season we only lost one player...He's MIA (he played Mr. Smith the Section 31 spy). So I think we have a good group now. Go ahead and start a thread in the OCC section of the RPG. There's always a possibility may lose folks in the future...and I think that a few of the people who don't write any more, still lurk around the RPG.

Heh. Yeah. I mean, he's supposed to act like a Vulcan. How else would a vulcan describe something like a Sugar Glider? That's kind of the fun and weird part about writing Vulcan dialogue: you've got to describe everything in terms so sterile they almost become humorous.

That is very true.  Its why I didn't create a Vulcan, writing is difficult XD.  :)

Welcome back to the RPGâ€"great first post Rico! I loved the scene you set up as well as the Subtle probing Talbot was able to carry out through the game. I may be reading too much into the chess match, but it seemed as though the pieces represented specific people on the ship. Particularly Khev's queen (the agent's wife, Commander Sevryll). If that was your intent, bravo! Nicely done.

I thought that the Admiral's mission was unsanctioned. Did he share his goal with a few of the brass?

Title: Re: Comments & Complements from readers and players
Post by: Rico on October 05, 2007, 06:49:32 AM
Thanks Jen.  I wish I could write more, but time seems to get away from me with a lot of other things going on too.  I usually have scenes rolling around in my head for several days before I put something down.  Yes, I was trying to imply a few things in the game as well as possibly things to come in the mission ahead.

As far as the mission, since the marine guard/undercover agent is with him I kind of assumed he shared the mission with Khev.  Therefore, I think Talbots feels Khev blabbed the mission a bit to his superiors.  Not sure if that all plays out but it's the way I was thinking.
Title: Re: Comments & Complements from readers and players
Post by: 3 Ducks in a Man Costume on October 05, 2007, 07:28:50 AM
OK. For a minute, I was wondering why Talbot knew the agent was an agent, because 31 is notorious for going unnoticed even by Starfleet brass. But then, if 31 comes out of the shadows, they're probably confident that whatever they have planned will make up for the lack of secrecy. Or perhaps blowing their own cover is part of the design. Either way, it makes for some interesting possibilities.
Title: Re: Comments & Complements from readers and players
Post by: Rico on October 05, 2007, 07:37:03 AM
Talbot doesn't know he is an agent.  However, he is a bit suspicious of him right now.
Title: Re: Comments & Complements from readers and players
Post by: 3 Ducks in a Man Costume on October 05, 2007, 07:45:02 AM
Oh, OK. I assumed that because you made reference to him as an agent, your character knew.

But seriously, who wouldn't be suspicious of a Romulan? They're slippery little devils, ain't they.
Title: Re: Comments & Complements from readers and players
Post by: Rico on October 05, 2007, 07:52:59 AM
Actually Talbot is half Romulan as well.  Obviously, I know he is an agent.  But my character Talbot in the RPG doesn't know that.  At least for now.

Heh. Yeah. Cardassians drink blood. Didn't you know that?

But seriously, there are some developments that I want to make to/with/for my character that necessitated this little episode coming as early as it did. We had planned to build Brandt up a little more, but I jumped the gun a little.

Perhaps while we're still getting the ship and crew in order, there might be glimpses (flashbacks maybe?) into the past relationship between Enoch and Brandt. I know I have some back story with her that I'm going to put into a profile entry.

Nice post, Jen. I especially liked the bloodsport-as-bonding moment. At first I thought that a Vulcan would regard such an activity as pointless and irrelevant, but then she is a science officer. And what could be more fascinating than observing the survival methods of two species locked in mortal combat! Excellent!

I think it would be kind of funny if my character went straight from icing a Tal'Shiar black-ops agent to cheering up an ensign with the blues. I'm sort of known for taking perverse pleasure in ideas like that. But I think my character needs a nap: he's had a long day. I'm probably going to focus on back story for a bit, anyway. Where's a drunken Klingon when you need one?

Just watch out for the giant death robots guarding the hangar. There are giant death robots gurading the hangar, aren't there? I mean, come on, what good is a hangar without giant death robots to guard it. You've got this perfectly good hangar on one hand, and then you've got all these spare giant death robots sitting around. Solution: guard the hangar! Don't waste those giant death robots! Someone took the time to build them, so you might as well use them. Guard the hangar. Guard it with death robots--giant death robots. Get my drift?

GIANT DEATH ROBOTS!

(Wow. Sorry. That was crazy talk. I guess I just needed to get that out of my system.)

I've been spending the last couple of days getting caught up on this RP, and I've got to hand it to all of you-- outstanding work!  Everyone has obviously put a lot of time and effort into creating their characters and backstory, and it gives the RP a depth that is lacking in some of the Trek novels I've come across lately.  Keep up the great work; I can't wait to see how the story develops! :)

Hey Ducks, I'm just curious...wouldn't a drunk Vulcan be very suspicious? It would to Sevryll as Vulcans rarely drink alcohol...just on special occasions.

This might be a dumb idea, but I was thinking that we could compile the seasons into some small paperback books using lulu (http://www.lulu.com/ (http://www.lulu.com/)) it costs about 7 bucks USD to create a 100 page paperback book. I'd love to read this RPG from the start in book form.

I think it's a great idea.. but there would need to be some major editing before it was published. And that takes time.

We really liked doing the audio versions of the RPG and so far only a small portion of that has been done because it takes a huge amount of time that most of us here don't have.

But I do like the idea.

That is a cool idea. Having been editing my own novels for the last year due to laziness, I can agree that editing really takes time and is very draining in some aspects.

Yeah. Editing is an enormously lengthy process, but it can still be done. The trouble I see with it is all the back story and character introductions. How do we incorporate the characters' side stories (in the Active Profiles section) into the main story? Granted, physically it wouldn't be hard to do. But doing it in a readable and logical way would be trickier.

I think it's a great idea, but I agree with Kenny, the editing is a daunting task. I edited the first time for the audio drama. The first thing that really hit me, and it should have been obvious, was that this RPG doesn't read exactly like a book. Some people repeat the first few lines of a post they were replying to, some people forget to write in the third person...some things need to be reworded...some don't fit in the story. It's a big project that would take a lot of time. But I'd be willing to do this if we had more than two people helping. We could revisit the first season and tie that up nicely—it sort of fell apart. It should be fixed so we can be proud of it.

The back stories don't need to be apart of the book ,but if we had to include them, maybe each bio/backstory could be their own chapters intended to introduced each character before the main story started.

I still want to do the audio dramas...we need to finish Season Two. I'm pretty sure the parts were all recorded—they just weren't put together . If you need help mixing that Rick, let me know.

Yes, we want to continue that, time issues with Nathan working and going to college and my work duties increasing!  (holiday's are busy for pastor's) :)  But hopefully we can finish the season out on audio.  I will ask for help. I need to find out where we are.  ANd thanks again Jen for your editing, you did a great job.

Thanks Rick...And again, just let me know and I'll pitch in where ever you need me as far as mixing and recording go.

Back to the book—here's something to think about: If we publish this through LULU, its going to cost somebody money. If we provide a nicely organized and laid out PDF for download, at the end of each season, we may attract potential readers and writers. I think it's more likely people will read it if it's free.

In addition to the free PDF, the audio drama is free...well for the most part. We have to pay for sound effects and spend our free time putting it together, but it's a labor of love. :)

I could also help out with some of the editing. I don't want to boast but I do a lot of the editing for my school team projects and everyone always tells me I do a great job. . .although sometimes I do wonder if I really am good.

Then again, editing a creative writing project is much different than editing research papers. . .

I like the PDF idea and the paperback idea. I think both can be done.  Those that want the paperback can always choose to buy it. Frankly, I don't really like reading from a PC screen (but that's mostly because my chair is not very comfortable) so I'd be willing to buy the paperback.

BTW Jen, I tried to edit the quotation issues on my posts in season 3 but the thread is locked.

But there's the fact that Star Trek is owned by Paramount...We can't make a profit on something that is copyrighted, even if the money is going to pay for the books we print. I'm not sure that a we would make up the cost—we have to sell the books and there's no guarantee that people would pay to read it.  ???

It is a good idea though and we definitely appreciate the thought and the fact that you want to read it all. That makes us feel good. But the free route is probably safer.

I think you are allowed to pay for a printing as long as you aren't trying to sell it, but if we get a good PDF version, we can talk to more than a few places that can do bindings.

Great joint post Kenny and X! Quinn is pretty ticked... Aeric has a lot of work to do to convince his commanding officers that he's a value to the crew and trustworthy. Poor guy...he's got rotten luck.

It hit me when I was reading this post that the Captain and XO have no clue what Areic is talking about when he refers to Temporal Defense or orders from another Temporal agent. Quinn and Sevryll should probably ask him that question at some point.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. :blush  Like Rico and Just X said, everyone is doing some outstanding work on the RPG.  The participants are all very imaginative, and have given their characters a lot of depth.  I also love the fact that everyone is working together to move the story forward; it's cool to see posts that are collaborations between different players.  It gives the game coherence and makes each post seem like a logical part of a single large story.  I participated in an RPG on another forum that didn't have the cooperation and structure that this one does, and it eventually evolved into a mish-mash of unrelated stories that ended up going nowhere.  With the quality of the folks involved here, I don't see any danger of that happening to this RPG.

I'm honored to be in such great company here! :)

Thank you. Now that we have this nice list of people on the ship, I thought it would be nice to give a few of them some screen time. I'm going to try to define some of the people on the flight deck so that they can be developed for other parts in the story. I at least want to get some of their skills and personality out in the open even if some of them are going to stay background players.

When I concieved the idea, I had planned on introducing the two pilots more as they were in seperate holodeck doing their part of the mission, but it got too long and I decided to focus on Jaxa and hint at the other two.

I had also planned on the flight crew meeting via a lower decks styled setting and discussing their upcoming mission, but honestly, I think that I laid the foundations of the Chief and Lt. Jaxa well enough to not need to give them more screen time as of yet.

I'm loving what everyone is doing and since there is a bit of time until the action picks up, fleshing out the crew without forcing the story to progress has been quite fun and a good test to see if the bible and wiki are worth the effort and I'd have to say that having that info does make it easier to put a story together.

When Jen suggested we flesh out some NPCs in the first skype meeting, I didn't think I'd have this much fun with them. I was totally wrong.

I think the best way to figure that out is to figure out who is currently being played by looking in the active section and then picking a few of the names from the manifest that are not being played or used by people currently writing for them.

I would further suggest that you look at the department of the NPCs you want to play and then talk to the department head about playing one of the npcs or coming together to add another NPC to the ship since there are over 500 beings on the ship.

Hey, guys.

I have to apologize; I kinda broke up the flow of the story. :-[  I put together a post and was getting ready to post it when I got the "warning:  another post has just been made" message.  I went ahead and threw caution to the wind, and posted anyway.

Sure enough, the post immediately before mine involved a character I included in my post.  I went back and edited my post to try and make it less jarring to the timeline, but the edit wasn't perfect.  I guess I'm a little selfish; I just couldn't bring myself to delete my post. :ohwell

Once again, guys; sorry about the way my post might have interfered with the story-flow.  I promise to be more vigilant in the future, and to keep up with the momentum of the story.

Also; if y'all think that my post is too damaging to the story-flow, I'll go ahead and delete it. :-[

Don't worry about it Kenny. Understandably, the holiday has kept people from posting regularly and rather than leave the RPG idle, X and I decided to write a little character development.

As you know, David is one of several characters that I play. As long as he's apart of the story, I will continue to write from his perspective. It's either too much of him or too much of Sevryll, Sareth or the kidos. Take your pick.  ;)

Thanks for the complement King. Just to let folks know, I want to start the mission in the next day or two. The weekend may be when some of the initial action takes place.

If you're unsure of what to do, check out the outline we posted in the OOC for ideas.

So please post away.  ;)

Aeric and the rest of the crew are still on the ship. The only two crew members have left the to romulus.

I think that you can jump right into the story happening on the ship with no problems.

Thanks everyone.

However, I need to give credit to the band Maroon 5. I thought that maybe someone would've recognized some of the lyrics from their song titled "Wake Up Call." A good part of the dialogue came from that song. Here's a link to the lyrics:http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/maroon5/wakeupcall.html (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/maroon5/wakeupcall.html)

Despite having the lyrics to the song, I took about three hours to write the entire post. However, I really enjoyed writing it. It's my little twist on the song and some things that have happened in my life and the lives of some of my friends.

I wish I could take credit for all of the dialogue. . .I wish I could write poems like Rick. :)

Here's a link to the music video. It's the U.S. version which means it's not the NC-17 version:

Great post Wraith!

I'm going out of town for my wedding anniversary this weekend... I may be able to post one more today, but won't be back until Sunday night.

Everyone continue posting the action scenes, on the Tiberius and on Romulus. We want to wrap up the season in the next week or so. Make this season the best... Post your hearts out!

Keep it up.  :)

The outstanding posts just keep on coming!  Great job, everyone!  And Jen; that last post was something else... the death scene told from the ensign's point of view was very well done. You did an incredible job painting the scene and depicting the character's frame of mind... it felt like I was there! :thumbsup  And the rising death toll... it reminds me of the beginning of Stephen King's "The Stand".  Very scary stuff...

***EDIT***

As I was making this post, yet another was added to the RPG- King and Moyer777, your joint posts are blowing me away!  You guys are doing a great job building up the sense of impending doom on the ship, and making it seem real.  Things are definitely looking pretty bad...  I'm hoping that Jen and Kenny have an ace up their sleeve!

The hard part is trying to make people see special effects.

I remember the scene in TNG when the race of beings had the rouge telepath that was abusing people.  The camera work on Jack Crusher and Beverly was really good.

I dug your post Kinglinksr... :) :thumbsup

Starstriker strikes me as being a pretty sensitive character... I can't help but wonder how he will react when he realizes that he was a catalyst in the spread of the virus...

I'm looking forward to seeing how his story develops...

Kenny, X and Jen--

Another great post! :thumbsup

I enjoyed the interplay between Drett, Aria and Quinn, as well as the subtle fleshing out of Aria's character.

And Quinn's pain was palpable-- you guys did a good job depicting the struggle between his altruistic nature and his need to do his duty as Captain of the Tiberius.

I'm eagerly awaiting the outcome of his discussion with Starfleet command...

Yeah, I have to give Tim all the credit in showing the mortality of people other than redshirts in out trek verse. It was a very powerful step in what we all do together to build a story.

It also ended his story sooner than anyone expected, a very life like situation that happens all too often.

It's kind of wild how ideas come.  I was walking yesterday and was thinking of how I would feel if I knew my ship was going to blow up and I had to cram myself in a little claustrophobic compartment and jettison myself into space.  I would be so freaked out.  The same yet even more intense feelings of going to the dentist for a root canal, you know you have to, but you don't want to do it.

Thus the post.  I wish I had more time, I would have made it more descriptive emotionally.

Anyway, I think I got the point across.  I could see it in my head!

:)

I would like to participate this season. I will be reading the previous seasons and jumping in this one. I will come up with a plausible reason my character was not involved and go from there, unless you want me to come up with a different character.

I think there are a few reasons for the great start to this season.  I also think each season has steadily improved.  A big part I think are the recent Ready Room's.  They really add a lot to the overall RPG experience and helps keep folks up to date on the RPG.  Also, Kenny and Jen have been working very hard to recruit new members and also to work with those already in the RPG to make sure things flow and move along well.  Kudo's to everyone at making this so much fun to read and a great success!

I guess this just isn't my thing. I was trying to keep up with the posts but got distracted and ... well, I'm respectfully bowing out. Sorry all.

I'm enjoying the posts. I laughed outloud when Mackie stepped on her conical hat. AWESOME! And I laughed when Dunn and D'callan said they were bored. You guys are cracking me up. :D
Just a few Reminders: This program is supposed to be fun, so be creative, don't look too much for direction... We're breaking a little from the outlines we create and flying by the seat of our pants. This is your chance to direct the course of the story, so get medieval. Also, don't skim the posts... you may miss some important details added for quests.

I'm going to suggest that we make this a short single season and let this go another week or two. It's finally getting traction and the other main story can wait...otherwise we will never get to it.

I know. It's not your fault that this story became long, but at this rate we are a week from getting out of the holodeck and even close to planetside. You have us all together and doing these joint posts, which is fun. Why not let it run another week or two, close it out, move on to the mission as a new Season?
Title: Re: Comments & Complements from readers and players

LOL. I asked everyone for their opinions about how we should deal with the holodeck. You said Kenny and I need to "just make a decision". :D

I'm open to what the people want. Comments?

Again - it's up Kenny & Jen.  I'm personally fine with letting the story continue into the mission.  The season breaks for me aren't that critical.  Especially when it seems things are starting to get interesting right now.
Title: Re: Comments & Complements from readers and players
Post by: X on May 07, 2008, 06:05:02 PM
I think that ending on the holodeck after it's complete and then opening on the planet after dropping off the passengers would work better to trim some of the time.

If we go that way, we could do it as a new season or just imagine it's after a commercial break. We don't need to see the whole trip to the space station and then the planet on screen.

LOL!  :roflmao

Well, what I meant was a decision to stop the holodeck program immediately and get to the mission back last week. We didn't quite get there. We sort of have tried to split the difference and still haven't found Kenny yet! Since we never really pulled the trigger on ending this, let's see it through! :)

I just want to make a brief, general comment on the RPG.

This is Jen & Kenny's project.  They put a great deal of time, effort and hard work into it.  While others also spend time writing some great posts, they are still the ultimate decision makers.  If they decide they want feedback I know they will ask.  As for the current situation I think Jen has made it pretty clear the direction she is taking things.  So let's all work on writing some new, interesting posts in the story and let them handle the rest.

I'd like to offer out a big thank you to both Kenny and Jen for all their hard work, and I'd also like to say thanks and well done to all the great writers of the RPG.

???  Can I have a mod repair a section I wrote for the last joint post?  The line I wrote was-

"One thing was certain, in any event.  Despite her apparent conversancy with fighting, she seemed to have a healthy dose of her people's belief in their infallibility."

Somehow, someone changed conversancy (personal knowledge or information about someone or something) to conservancy (environmental conservation).  Sorry if this comes of as being silly, but I'm kind of neurotic when it comes to someone changing the meaning of something that I wrote.  :ohwell

Final Briefing To Come Tomorrow 12ish Central Time
I'm just going to write the post as if Sevryll and Quinn completed the meeting, assigned crewmen to two away teams and then asked for questions/suggestions. If your character has anything to contribute to the meeting, follow up posts to the briefing will be your chance to do so. If you have anything for your character to do before that meeting, do it before 12ish Central.  ;)

I'm going to have Sevryll dismiss the meeting and order Ryla to begin the surgical alterations, since Peterson will undergo them as well and will need to begin preparations for the mission.

These people can attend the meeting, those listed here, who are not senior officers can come at the request of their senior officers:

Quinn
Sevryll
Aeric (Second Officer/ Operations)
Peterson (CMO)
K'ararth (Engineering)
K'Tan (Tactical)
Margon (Counselor)
Aria (Civilian Medic)
Ryla (Surgical Alterations)
Spring (Botanist)
D'Callan (Security)
and Korridan (Engineering- maintenance, repair)

QuoteThe sky transitioned from blue-green to vermillion, as the Ter'Oss sun submerged itself in the sea of grass on the distant horizon. Daylight sank with the Population I Star and took with it, the warmth of the day.  Twelve hours earlier, the sun's rays had welcomed Sevryll by caressing her jade skin with an embrace of heat. Now the cool night air nipped at her like a cornered animal. A bitter breeze stirred, prompting the fine hairs at the nape of her neck to stand on end. Sevryll subdued the urge to shiver, and headed back to the runabout where replicated wool blankets, robes and shawls were stowed. The Vulcan seemed to be swallowed up by the gaping mouth of an invisible monster, as she entered the emitter-cloaked vessel.

Incredible post, Jen!  I dig your use of metaphor and simile here; you've painted the scene so vividly, not only can I see it, I can feel it!  This is the type of word-picture I strive to paint when I post;  I bow before your talent!  Once again, awesome job!!!

Just X, Wraith and Institches: I LOVE that scene. It was very well written, and exceedingly clever and creative. I love The Wizard of Oz, and this post's comedy reminded me a bit of the scene where the Scare Crow, Tin Man and Lion jump the Witch's soldiers to steal their uniforms. That's intended as a complement btw. Bravo. :D

Awesome job on the follow up Eric! I love the way you transitioned the poker game. I had to research to write those scenes... Bryan said he wasn't much of a card player either so we weren't very sure what to do next. :D I was hoping it would have an interesting ending. Thanks for tying those loose strings into a nice bow for us. FYI, I think the festival sounds like FUN. Great idea!

Not to get too off topic, but in this day and age I think just about every job takes a big amount of creativity.  Unless you are a line worker putting the same nut on a bolt all day, most positions are asking more and more for new ideas from their employees.  Just about a week or so ago we had a half day session at my job just talking about new products to work on and brainstorming.  It's just a way of working in the 21st Century.

P.S.  Nice site Billy.

Well. I had an office job while I was in school where I basically did a lot of data entry and reports. So instead of just doing them, I'd find interesting ways to auto-generate my reports using Excel and things of the like. Even if your job doesn't really NEED you to think, you can force it to. if I hadn't done stuff like that I'd have gone nuts.

I always find something creative to do. Even when i worked at Woolworths i found my creative streak by laying the cards out in the shelves so the first word of each saying (Happy Birthday = H) would end up saying a rude or suggestive word. Oh the fun.

I always forced myself to keep busy at McDonald's. We had this one manager that would make you do ridiculous 'maintenance' tasks if you weren't busy. I had to clean the ceiling one day, another day he had me cleaning the grout lines on the floor times in the storage room! After that I always just pretended to clean.

Yes, great idea Desi. :)
Chris had a good idea to have a "clean up" team from another ship come in behind us and fix the cultural contamination issue. This may help us wrap up quickly. I was thinking we might use Zremm's probes to enhance the beam out of both teams. They have to be done at the exact same time, as I believe Rico wrote that the probes can only be used once. Maybe after we explain what happened in a few subsequent posts we can use the beam out as the last scene of the season? Thoughts?

Just to remind you guys. You're characters are still disguised as Ter'Ossick and they obviously don't have time to remove the prosthetics. This will help us distinguish between universes too. Use it when you describe your peeps.

Oh, and for the people who write for medical characters, in case there is any doubt.. Ryla is gone. You can't save her. "That's all she wrote,".  ;)

Great follow-ups Eric and Meds! I think this is the most exciting start to a season we've had yet!

LOL!

I honestly haven't decided how I'm going to have him react.  I've been more focused on what I'm going to be writing for the Mirror Universe scenes.  I'm thinking that at this point in his career, K'Tan has developed enough professionalism to not let his feelings get in the way of his duty.  Then again, he has had a funky, Klingon-type upbringing...

We'll just have to wait and see. ;)

Make it up... no one remembers what color they were (though I think K'ararth was black).
They can't change our appearance in the middle of this situation, even if we do have a brief reprieve. "It wouldn't be prudent", as a former president once said. ;)

Hello everyone.

As a newcomer to treks in Sci fi, I have only been listening for about 4 months, and am now catching up from the beta cast. I have to say, great show, wonderful community... Something that any trek fan would want to be a part of.

I have to express my sheer thrill at the audio dramas I heard in some of the ready rooms recently... Amazing. Great work. I have to say my favorite one was the violin in the jefferies tubes. Took my favorite episode of TNG, and built on it.. It was so well put together, something I am sure everyone is looking forward to seeing more of. I can tell already that season 8 is going to blow away the preconceptions, because it seems the team is coming in with a level headed attack strategy, and an very intresting plot twist...

And while it saddens me that I havent yet gotten familiar with the mirror universe, I look forward to seeing what happens. Good luck... and Keep going boldly where no one has gone before and we will all follow you.

Hey guys, LOVING the action scenes... great work on the descriptions and collaborations. Just keep one thing in mind as you battle the drones in future posts. The Borg are a menacing lot and we want our characters to be between a rock and a hard place. Try not to steal too much of the Borg's power by wiping them all out with blades. Klingons and other blade wielding species could have put an end to the Borg a long time ago if Bat'leth was the answer to the problemo. ;)  It's the shear numbers that makes them unstopable. They just keep coming and coming and adapting to everything their victims can throw at them.

Maybe the Borg will eventually adapt to your bladed weapons. Maybe the current of energy that powers their cyborg components can fry their adversaries through the metal blades that are swung at them.  Our characters will have to figure out a way to survive without taking out the entire boarding party and those who have been assimilated.... we've got a long way to go until the end of the season. :)

They have forcefield. Forcefield are known to deflect physical attacks. If you think about the holding cells on a federation ship, I think it becomes clear.

I also believe that Worf managed to cut one of the Borg, not because it's constantly possible, but because the script needed a way to solve the whole threat and leaking air suit.

I think that the nature of the Borg was a bit weakened in first contact, but given that it did happen, if blade were a true option in combating the Borg, Starfleet would have briefed their captains on the solution and armed the troops with bladed weapons. If Voyager is a good example, then it just might be a flub or script necessity that bladed weapons worked that one time in First Contact.

Another thing to consider is that if bladed weapon were that great of an advantage, then the races with hand weapon training should have few to none assimilated people. Again, that was proven false in the Voyager episodes.

That's just my two cents. If Blades work and blades are the first real technology that cultures develop ... the Borg would not have gotten that far at all.

Title: Re: Comments & Complements from readers and players

In my opinion, the Borg can't be beaten by physical force.  Because of their hive-mind, cutting down a drone is almost like one of us cutting our hair-- more will grow to replace what is lost.  And as horrible as it sounds, each drone has about as much self awareness as a strand of hair (I know, it's an exaggeration, but you get the idea).

I think that the only way to truly defeat the Borg would be to attack their mind, or programming.  Something like a computer virus, or a telepathic attack (or both).

Speaking of Telepaths, nice post Kenny!

The plot thickens-  Who is the Borg King?  Will it be someone we recognize?  Can't wait to find out!

But a forcefield that could stop a physical weapon as opposed to an energy weapon would also prevent physical contact, so they couldn't grab you. It's kind of like DUNE... ;)

Sure it can. The Borg doesn't need to keep the forcefield active. it can pop up during an attack. Even without the forcefield, they have armor on that is better than a lot of things, consider that the phasers have to be on the highest setting to knock them down and other would be vaporized, that's some good armor.

I don't think that they would have gotten as far as they did if physical attacks were all that dangerous to the borg. I also think that for someone to get that close to a borg to inflict physical damage, they might be assimilated. I have yet to see a borg die onscreen from a single blow. Lose a limb? sure, but not die and that means they could infect someone.

That's a good point.  Heck; the most effective weapon for mowing down the drones would probably be projectile weapons, like the machine gun Picard used in First Contact.  Borg shields might hold off a few bullets, but they couldn't keep their shields up forever...
My point was that even if you could wipe out the drones by the hundreds, the losses wouldn't discourage or demoralize the Borg.  Like Jen mentioned; they are relentless.  They would just keep on sending in more drones.  And if we somehow managed to wipe out the thousands of drones in one Borg ship, they would just send out more ships.

In the Trek Universe, I think the writers intended the Borg to be the one bad guy that you can never truly beat.  You might hold them off for a while, but never eliminate them for good.  That's what makes them such scary opponents.

LOL! It's Star Trek, I don't think they thought all this out. ;)

I think that's partly true, but we also need to adapt the Borg to serve our story needs. We have at or around 160 people on the ship. They didn't send the entire sphere to attack the ship and if we wish to keep the Borg a threat during the escape, they should be able to survive being on the Arabella for more than a few minutes. They didn't send 100 borg to take the ship and if dozens are falling, how many will be able to keep the plot moving for the rest of the story?

I agree with Eric about the sheer number of drones being a serious threat, but I also think that for them to incorporate weapons, personal armor, and personal shields, they do place some value on their drones. They can handle the loss with ease, but I think that they would rather leave a target ship or planet with more Borg than they started with.

As to the holodeck scene, some people consider that a huge flub because other holodeck episodes had established that the rounds from a holo projectile weapon were holograms, which would make it energy and thus subject to assimilation.

OK... It's our version of Star Trek so we can all make it what we want. Point is to keep them scary as long as possible. :) So if they keep coming at us that makes them a relentless wave of zombies that want to eat your brains....I mean assimilate you. They can't beam more drones over, so that means that our crew would have to be the new threat as far as drones are concerned. I think it would be interesting to see how our characters treat the assimilated crew. Margon for instance. What will you do when you happen upon Borg Margon?!

I don't think we need another vaccine (it sounds alot like season 5 and the virus), but I'm glad your gears are turning on this. Maybe they just get stunned and herded into a shuttle bay where they're kept until the nanites and implants can be removed person by person.

Hi guys, great job on the posts. I'm sorry I haven't been able to jump in there this week. I had a technical question for you "technobabble freakasaruses". Is it "nanobots" or "nanites" that Aria and Aeric have? I thought they were nanites. Just want to find out so we can correct the posts that use "nanobots" if it's incorrect before we read them next week.

I'm so glad Institches is back! :)

Lets finish up this Act so we can start with our Mirror Universe in Act II. Finish up whatever business needs concluding in this Act before we cross over. Act II is up next and Act III will be our final chapter... the final chapter, of course, is where all the loose ends are tied up and the story is concluded, so if your story needs more room to tell then set it up now before we move on to the Mirror Universe.

Just a reminder for everyone, take your time in writing your posts. Make sure you get the punctuation as close as you can to proper. Not all of us are experts at placing commas, I'm not, but try to end sentences with periods and use quotation marks when you're writing dialog. It's sometimes difficult to read posts for the Ready Room when it's one long sentence or if the grammar and spelling is really off. Just a friendly reminder. :)

I think we should wrap up Act 1 now, the meeting in the briefing room is good enough to secure a decent ending. Great writing everyone, absolutely mind blowing.

Yes, I can do a few collaborative posts with K'Tan, Fissual, and Took as to how we foil the Borg regen alcoves on the Arabella (still don't like that name), and we can get on with the good stuff! A fat, lazy, unmotivated K'arath!

Ready to put Fissual back in action, he and Reese's storylines are ready to take separate paths.
And I'm ready to get into the mirror universe as well.

Thanks Meds. :)

Hey everyone, I think I'm going to transition this Act to Act II (mirror universe now). So if your character is in the briefing...don't respond to my post about Sevryll. Let's leave that until Act III. If you're working on getting to the Sickbay, it's OK if you post about that until we get the introduction post to Act II up (just don't want any more posts about the briefing). Kenny and I are working on it... and Meds and I have two that follow. After that it will be open for Mirror Time. :D

I'd say you are keeping it mysterious, I'm still in the dark, there again I'm also not trying to fathom things out. I like to be kept in suspense. The throwing D'Callan thing was something i thought about but there again she is a vulcan and they are strong, hmmm hold on a minute,,,, oh........

I need to pull K'arath completely out of this season, I'll never be able to write his story. I would like to keep trying to contribute joint posts for Ensign Dunn with Med, Rick, Wraith, et al. Things at work right now combined with training for the Ironman 70.3 World Championships Nov. 9 have taken all my attention and I can't give 100% to the story right now. Sorry, but I can still bang out reading if needed as well. Love you all and will do my best to turn this market around for all of our sakes! ;)

I am also pulling out of the RPG.  Rava will be usable as an NPC character, but that's all.  I've decided this as I can't figure out what I want, thus I must take a backpedal on life as I figure out my road, my goal, and my destination.

Great job everyone! Don't forget to keep encouraging each other. I think honest complements help keep the momentum going in the story... Of course, you should give credit where credit is due, if you think the writing stinks don't comment. :D

I'd like to pat Rico and Meds on the back for their recent additions. The intrigue just keeps coming. :)
As I've mentioned before, it's alot of fun to do joint posts, try to mix it up and collaborate with someone you have never written with before or someone you haven't written with in a very long time.... see what comes of it. :)

I think Act II is about to top the mountain and begin it's journey to Act III. So start wrapping up your side plots on TIBERIUS....There are a few things that have to come to a close on the Empire's flag ship before the big, giant, scrap between the Alliance, Cooperative and Empire... so start working towards that.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to say that I have been SO impressed with the RPG. I had never considered reading / listening to a fan made story in this way until I discoved the Ready Room in my TrekSF podcast queue. I've got to say it didn't take me long to get hooked! I have yet to finish Season 8 as I prefer to listen to the post as they are performed so well.

I am considering going back and listening to previous seasons now. I'm guessing there is a continuity going right back to season 1 just like any ST tv show has. I have been reading the character profiles to try to get insights into them and I was wondering if there are any plans to branch out this RPG extended Star Trek Universe into some sort of Wiki style web page to document the history of the characters and key past events etc? That would be great for RPG newbies like me!

BTW I am really looking forward to the audio drama!

You never know, once I have a little more RPG experience under my belt I may contribute to this wonderful creative expression...

Keep up the great work,

really looking forward to next season!

Though we are all obviously into technology one way or another (based simply on the fact that we are posting on an internet message board), I always thought there must be a cool feeling to see something you've written and put a lot of time and effort into physically sitting on your desk. Makes it seem more real I think.

I get a feeling of accomplishment looking at that stack and I didn't even write a word in it!

KC and Dangelus, I really enjoyed your introductory posts! I'm looking forward to reading more from you!  Iceman; nice job weaving into the Afterburner scene; very skillfully done!  By the way, I read your post in OOC about collaborating with Dangelus' character; cool idea. :)  And Rick, that last post really hooked me.  What have you got up your sleeve?  ;)

Welcome to the RPG Max. Great posts everyone! I love the scenes taking place off the ship as well. It's neat to get a  little perspective from someone outside our crew! Well written guys. :)

I check my email often for notifications on the RPG...it's a great way to keep up with it. There's a lot of posts flying around so consider clicking that feature to stay on top of it all.

I'm really enjoying the side stories everyone. Well done. That holodeck investigation was all Meds' idea and I thought it worked very well. Feathers, I love the latest Starbase lounge collaboration between you and Meds. Well done.

Just a note to keep in mind as we continue along.  Be careful not to progress the timeline too much. A little overlap is okay, but some of us still have characters in the lounge at the reception. I  have worked on a joint post with Desi and Kasey to get Cyra, Ryla and Mackie out of the Afterburner, which will go up later today, but we had to wait for writers who have a busier real life schedules to pick up an open-ended post or join our collaboration...so it pushed us back a little.

It's not a big deal if the story has already progressed to the next day, and you're still finishing up on the day before, but the story works better as a whole if we are close to the same timeline while on the ship. It hasn't changed too much this season, just giving a heads up.

What Desi, Kasey and I did to get out of our timewarp, was write as though our characters were in the lounge all night chatting, and didn't notice how long they had been there until the morning shift showed up. If you get behind in the story as a writer, see if you remedy the situation by coming up an idea that will get your character from one day to the next, in one post. Maybe use a flashback to finish a scene or a conversation that recalls what happened so that you can catch up with everyone else. :)

The whole time thing is something I've been aware of but am not sure how to handle.

Who decides when it's tomorrow?

I've generally removed 'last night' and 'yesterday' references from my posts so I hope it's open to the readers interpretation what happened when. I'm trying to track what's going on on the ship but am not completely sure how well it's going to work.

That's partly why I'm generally writing cut scenes rather than fully sequential stuff.
Title: Re: Comments & Complements from readers and players
Post by: Jen on February 28, 2009, 06:08:25 AM
We haven't really had a written rule about the timeline, but in the past seasons I have made sure I knew where everyone was, and what was going on then I progressed it as the moderator. Kenny has progressed it as well. If you're one or two posts from catching up with everyone, it's not a big deal. A little overlap is fine. :)  But when there are a lot of writers, and they're posting once a day, it's very easy to be lost in the past.  ;)

Oh...and it's okay to say you're having breakfast or dinner. Our characters may work different shifts. They could be eating at weird hours or sleeping during the day or whatever. Just be careful about the actual ships time and shift changes and things like that. :)

Thanks Jen, but you polished off that post and that's what makes good collaboration. Mike's post is all his i just added the last line, he got D'Callan dead on so well done Mike. Time line is tricky and i think people get all excited and want to get their post in. Its best to write your posts and just hang on to them, PM Jen or Kenny and I'm sure they will say wait until so and so, that's what i do ha ha ;)

Ah so the sneaky rules are coming out now!

It's odd really. At the moment I've just written and posted whem the next day comes around but I could romp through a lot of time doing that, or give everyone every detail of ferengi life. I suspect part of it is RPG newbie enthusiasm so I will probably slow down with time but part is also the fact that I'm finally writing something again. Other people are reading it too which is a bonus.

On the D'Callan front, I've had him read to me on a weekly basis for quite a while now, which helps.
Title: Re: Comments & Complements from readers and players
Post by: Meds on March 01, 2009, 08:35:20 AM
Nothing wrong with enthusiasm Mike, i still do it. I have a rough working line on where i want D'Callan to go this season and then i work on the events going on to put his story together. This will help build my character but also give me time to work on the other NPC's. I write every day for the RPG but i don't necessarily post every day. Sometimes I'll write and wait and then think "Oh K'Tans walking down a corridor time for some D'Callan K'Tan conversation" and then throw in a post.

Great writing everyone.

I meant to say - I loved the holo investigation scene on the station. That worked really well for me both as a bit of writing and as a use of tech. I wish I'd come up with it.

The whole Bowers story is lookin quite cool too.

I first looked at this game because I know Jen from elsewhere in `Netland. But the reason I wanted to join and why I check the board with almost stalker-esque zeal, is that the writing feels very... (I've been laboring over the right adjective for a couple minutes)... smooth. The hardest thing to do when writing fiction is to make it feel like the reader is actually standing in the room with the person as an unseen observer. If you burden the work with too much description, it takes the reader out of the moment. If you use too little, it has no presence, no sense of occurring in 'reality'. Striking that balance in a sci-fi setting is dang-near impossible. It' one of the the reasons sci-fi gets unfairly scoffed at by a lot of writers.  Granted, we have the benefit of working from a VISUAL medium, most of us can for a mental picture of the interior of the Enterprise.

But this ain't the Enterprise now, is it? This is the Arabella, set several years later. So while we have a crutch, someone's sawn through most of it.

Despite that, we still have the "looking over the shoulder" feel. It's awesome. I love it.

Yeah Aeric's done some brig time. He's trying to be good though. The kids have mellowed him out otherwise he would be very Kirkish in how he dealt with problems. Passing out neck chops and double fisted spine blows.

Well, if it helps, Aeric has a working kitchen in his Quarters and the Officer's mess has a mini kitchen. Cook likes to make new dishes and then scan them into the replicators for the whole crew to enjoy.

Feathers and Meds, I enjoyed your joint post. I could totally see Galdar's reaction to seeing his transfer notice. Feathers, I look forward to writing a joint post with you when he comes for his physical. Ryla would be the one he'd come to see since she's now in charge of routine medical care. You're very kind, but I'm simply throwing words on a page in a fairly haphazard manner. I'm still trying to feel my way back into this whole 'writing' thing. The fact that you've the confidence and abiliry to act it rather than read of is all down to you.

I think I've reached the point where you are the voice of Galdar in my head, though.

What I've got to do now us finish off his little story arc and get him aboar the ship.

Quite possibly. Having just heard Dan read this weeks installment, I've realised I actually combine the voices of both guys in my head. It actually helps form the character to a degree - thanks guys!

Having said that, I've just listened to Meds Reading Aeric. He's obviously am upper-class Brit :) Was he written that way?

The way I see it is that Aeric has the feel of a naval officer. And he's now second in charge of the ship and by Chris's writing you get the impression that Aeric wants the best, be the best and show off the best. I can see him through the writing sitting at a desk being quite important and for an actor you need to get into the character. So for me i see the naval link, and the voice would be quite upper military. Galdar is different i actually see the character of Fagin in Oliver Twist. Not that he's like Fagin but whenever you see the character of Fagin he's rubbing his hands and is slightly bent over and when i do his voice i actually do that. Now I know that sounds weird but that's how i get into character.

That's a great take, and pretty on the mark. Aeric wants to be the best and is the sort of person that places honor above comfort. He also spent some time on Vulcan and might have picked up their stuffy, seems that they are always looking down on you when they speak to you even when they supposedly don't give into emotions, inflection on some of his words. Which is what any officer on duty in the upper levels of the military seem to have mastered.

That doesn't sound weird at all, Meds. I do the same thing. I gesture with my hands and when the character smiles, I smile...it supposedly comes through the voice when you do that...or so my buddy Angela has told me. She's been a good teacher when it comes to acting.

I like your vision of Galdar and Aeric!  Great observations.

HEY! Who you call'n stuffy? :D

I know what you mean...it's so hard to play a Vulcan. You have to be flat and formal, but some how still utilize voice inflections. I try to raise my eyebrows a lot when I play Sevryll. I imagine her using that singular facial expression to get her points across.

I know what you mean, Vulcans are hard but they are fun too. I really enjoyed playing an 'actual' Vulcan with Radrek, Galdar's C.O. Doing a character like Lester who tries to emulate Vulcans in public with limited success and nerves and is usually pretty emotional on his own in his quarters is a challenge. I think the more reading I do, the more I get used to 'acting' the readings more... I hope.

You're doing a great job, I have no doubt you'll get better and better. Practice makes perfect! Especially with writing and voice acting.

I must say i actually prefere voice acting than standard acting. I do a lot of stuff in front of the camera and lately I'm having to do several different accents ( London, Newcastle, Yorkshire and Scottish) and its harder to do these in front of the camera because you're aware of facial ticks and movements. With audio acting you can wave your hands, get into character without worrying that you look like a idiot.
Dan you're doing great and the more you do the more confident you'll get.

Hey, don't laugh! I've done an awful lot more writing than I planned this season (I thought I wouldn't keep up with the story when I started). By the time we're finished, I'm going to need the break!

Thank you :)

It was good fun to write that particular sequence and Chris is an excellent man to work with. Not least because he catches all the detail and important bits that I'd tend to breeze past so makes the whole thing a lot more coherent and believable.

Burn out...before the season begins. That would be a first!

A lot of Galdar's stuff's been knocking about for weeks, I haven't bashed it all out as I've posted it but I think it will probably slow a bit by now.

I've just been reading Sevryll and Aeric's back story. Very well written! I think Jen must have been doing more RPG writing than anyone else in the break.

Thanks. :D   I type fast and most of the time the ideas roll, especially when I collaborate with you guys. ;)  It was fun coming up with Ryla and Galdar's prank scene. LOL. I can totally see them doing that. Word of warning to other characters: don't mess with the "Trill / Ferengi wonder duo". That was a fun scene to do and only finished yesterday too.

I've no idea if hair folicles really do have a fundamental frequency that they could tune the shower to...but it's a nice idea!

For anyone who ever wanted to know how Galdar handled his Kobsyashi Maru test at the Academy (yes for both of you!), that should be up later this morning.

It's coming. He can help move the injured to Sickbay... In the mean time you can do some character building by talking about what he's doing in the shuttlebay while waiting. What is going through his head? What does he see there in the bay? Why is he in Starfleet. etc. I did that earlier with Sevryll. She's just staring at the view screen and people are talking to her, but she's thinking about her husband being in danger. Do that sort of thing.

All of the past seasons were great, but somehow, this season seems to be more coherent, and flow more smoothly than many others.  It feels like everyone is stepping up their game, and it makes for some exciting, enjoyable reading.  Great job everyone!!!

Meds, X, Jen-- The evolving scenario involving the intruder is especially intriguing.  Great work!  :thumbsup

Fun post Feathers!  I love the fact he was drinking his beverage under the table while everything was going down. How very Ferengi. ;)

For the record, Ryla has no trouble finding guys...they're just always the wrong guys. That'll probably be her MO for a little while. :D

Chris said he was going for Han Solo when he created Oryn, but I picture  Lando Calrissian... "Hello what do we have here?" Purple cape and all.

It was a really fun post to work on. Chris came up with a lot of good ideas that could have worked, and once we set a path, it just seemed so easy to write. And I think Chris has it the other way around--he's the brilliant writer and I just played off of him. :)

Hey guys and ladies, great jobs on the recent posts!

Just a little reminder: Once the ship docked with the station, the romulans we rescued were all transfered to the station. I don't think that there are any left on the Arabella at this point unless it's by the captain's invitation or something like that.
Title: Re: Comments & Complements from readers and players

Good job everyone. FYI, I'm hoping to wrap up this season ASAP. If you have something to finish, character wise, please let me know...I would like to end on Weds or Thurs at the latest, but will make accommodations for individual story lines. I plan to end the season with a murder cliff hanger at the gala...don't move us from that scene. Thanks.

BTW, since the ship is now at the base, there's no reason Nalah has to remain aboard Arabella. To fit in with what you have going on right now, I would suggest there is some sort of red tape the Arabella's security department  is working to get through, to transfer Nalah aboard the Romulan station. Maybe the station is doing a background check.

My characters are pretty much settled into their break so I'm happy to run with whatever works. Tolok is forgoing the gala to work out some of his personal demons regarding the Romulan race while Galdar's having a whale of a time with Ryla which has now been somewhat spoiled by his father turning up.

As an aside, I don't care whether anyone reads the last few Galdar/Ryla posts or not but I had a great time writing them with Jen and really enjoyed bringing some of the backstory interaction we got going between these two characters into the mainstream story.

Really fun!

I've enjoyed writing those with you too. The mental image of Galdar's backflip always makes me laugh.  I couldn't stop myself from bringing a little Shindig/Kaylee to Ryla in those scenes..."there's some sort of hot cheeeeeeese cookies over there...Hot cheeeeese cookies". :D

I'm happy with this season as well. Good job and keep it up everyone. We're nearing the home stretch. If no one speaks up with regards to their individual character stories, I'm going to begin closing the door on this chapter. Allen, I know you said you had something up your sleeve for Herm. It seems like a very polished episode so far. Well done everyone! Remember we do this to have fun and to stretch our writing muscles. Lets continue to work together and encourage one another.  ;)

Did you know the RPG will be three years old on February 5th this year! Yeah!!!!  :cheering

I wanted to thank Hawkeyemeds and Just X for taking the modding reigns for me. When I found out I was pregnant I knew I would not be able to spare the attention this RPG and its writers deserved, and I did not believe I would be able to come back and give the same amount of effort that I have been putting forth for the last three years. I haven't been on Trek SF very much lately and as such I neglected to post why I asked these two writers in particular, to step in for me. I really should go ahead I do that now... and since I feel like being a cheerleader today (yeah the RPG is almost 3!) I'll pass on a little 'writer to writer warm and fuzzy advice' and moderator insights you may not have known about. (sorry for the long post, but when have I ever posted anything short and sweet? :D )

I recruited Meds for Season 6 in March of 2008. He said he had never written anything other than a script and was not sure he could write a story in an RPG, but true to form he quickly added that he would be glad to 'give it a go'. In the almost two years he's been writing with us, Meds has been energetic about the stories and extremely consistent as a writer (from beginning to end). He's always encouraging, always eager, always in good spirits, always gets along with other writers and never gives less than 100 percent to this game. Since day one, I have found his energy to be infectious and I love writing with him. He has learned much about writing since the day he made his first post and I think he will be a great example and help to new writers.

Chris (Just X) joined this game in Season Three (Aug 7, 2007). Like Meds he has been an eager and consistent writer every season since he joined. The first thing that struck me about his writing were his ideas, perspectives and approach to the story, which were new and interesting. He had an eye for important details and the ability to aid confused newbies or lost writers with their characters, helping them work their way into the story. I have enjoyed writing with him. Sevryll use to dislike Aeric (he stole her DNA to make a clone of their daughter from an alternate time line :D ) now they're an old married couple. It has been fun to work with Chris to develop our two characters over the past few years. Chris also helped me last season when Kenny could no longer mod this game. I tried doing it alone and found it overwhelming. He helped me direct the story and keep it on track and organized, which is very important to a game with so many writers participating.

Aside from all of that, Chris and Meds work well together. They've had their differences, as have all of us at one time or another, but they know the importance of keeping the game going, keeping it on track and organized and making sure it's fun and not an ego trip to any one character. What one moderator lacks, the other makes up for...it's a ying/yang situation that seemed to work well for Kenny and I.  Any-hoo, that's my long winded reason for why I asked them in particular to take over. They're great guys, great writers and great leaders. When you encourage each other in this OOC section, please don't forget to encourage them too. I can tell you modding an RPG can be frustrating and discouraging and we need to pat them on the back too.

Modding is not easy, especially if there is conflict between writers, which usually happens off screen (it did when Kenny and were mods because we wanted to keep the boards complaint and gripe free so as not to turn away potential writers). Dealing with spats quickly makes modding a stressful and thankless job that pays absolutely squat. Try not to give the mods a hard time...ask yourself if the beef you have will ruin your character forever or if you can find a work around that will suffice. Work together, not against each other. Kenny and I didn't talk a lot about this on the boards, because most of this happened off screen (attitudes and negativity), but know that in the past a few writers have been asked to leave the game due to their belligerent approach to the moderators and their craptastic attitudes about the game. One of those writer's had a character that was air locked in Season 5...it made for an entertaining scene, but it didn't have to be if he had been respectful to others.  Remember this game should be fun. The second it becomes a chore, or a stressful task to you, please take a step back...take a break, but let the mods know when you do.

The mods in this RPG act as the 'directors' of a show. Some people may not like direction they give, but if you want to know what chaos is like, read Season One. WOW...that was nuts!  :wacko   There was no direction and no real authority to speak of. Many people dropped out that season and it was never completed. Kenny and I took over after that and in the three years that followed we actively recruited people to either try the RPG or come back. We developed the use of an outline to guide people who felt lost in the first season. It worked well and tried to included everyone in the story in addition to helping them know the goal they should be writing towards. Hopefully that will be something that remains apart of this RPG.

Thank you again, Meds and Chris. Great job on the outline and direction. Keep up the good work and if you need anything from me, don't hesitate to ask.  Also, thanks to Kenny for all his hard work and dedication to this game. I've made many friends here, but the RPG seems to cultivate good friends through the cooperation needed to put forth a story. I will miss working with you as a mod and as a co-host on the Ready Room...luckily we're still pals off the boards. :) I hope you will come back as a writer.

Great job writers. Don't forget to post your complements for one another.

Nah, she wouldn't do that...though it would be fun. :D  She might talk them into playing cards or something. I'm still considering what I should do there. Just because she's confined to quarters doesn't mean I can't contribute to the story from her quarters. :)  I'm thinking of playing Nurse Caine in Sickbay too.

As far as the rest of the story, I'm enjoying it very much. Great job everyone. I loved Galdar's reaction to his promotion.

Poor D'Callan. What a mess he's in now. :)

Shelby is reminding me of Ro Laren. Especially now—remember Ro's last episode: "Preemptive Strike"?

Looking forward to seeing what happens next.

We should all start working together on the investigation so we're on the same page. I sent the moderators a list of the people last season that were written into the story on purpose, so they could be included as suspects after the murder. That should make it's way to the board soon.
