Title: RPG Holodeck Hangout—Vote
Post by: Jen on September 29, 2007, 07:06:40 AM
I a few of the best suggestions from each of the posters in the "Holodeck Suggestions" thread and added them to the poll. We hope to use this Holodeck program in every season, so choose one that sounds like something that's ripe with story possibilities. We may all get stuck in it one season.  :D

Edit from STF5 - I would like to add that only RPG players should vote. This is for them and if you aren't playing you really shouldn't vote. Thanks

I've always been a fan of the Old West.  ;)

Yeah I really liked that idea too Rico (the old west) but then I saw Camalot and I love Castle and Knights.. so I had to go with that. It was a tough choice.

I think the Old West is the way to go. First, the speakeasy is pretty much a version of what they had in Voyager, and we should have something different. A soap opera might be interesting, but it's not exactly a hangout because anything with a plotline is going to get stretched to its limits the more people use it. That is, how do you hang out in a soap opera? RV, movie set, and Gasoline Town: what the heck? Camelot (this is the correct spelling btw) is a pretty cool idea, but it's so huge. Where are characters going to go to congregate with so many options? So I'm for the Old West because it's smaller than Camelot, probably only has one saloon (read: hangout), and is generally more practical when servicing about 10 crewmen at any one time. And as an added bonus, it can be easily corrupted by malfunctions so that a crisis (ie: bandits taking over the town) can be presented and dealt with in a fun but timely manner.

The reason why these hangouts worked in Voyager (Paris bar), DS9 (Vick's Lounge), and TNG (the poker room), is because they were small, forcing the crew to interact inside them. Also, they had no plot line, so anything that went on inside was freeform and relaxing. There was no need to worry about pushing a plot forward while trying to unwind after a long day degreasing the warp core. Of course, with Vick's, there were opportunities to bring in strange happenings like the takeover by gangsters, but this problem and others like it in other series could be solved in one episode.

Plus, who wouldn't want to see a Vulcan science officer step through saloon doors with spurs jangling, spit tobacco juice, and say "pardner"?

I apologize for mistyping Camelot.  :blush

The original OOC post (called Holodeck Suggestions), where everyone offered their ideas, mentioned the Dixon Hill program as well as a few others as an example. This program we're voting on, is more than a hang outâ€"I guess I should have mentioned that again when I posted the poll here. The returning RPG members had all visited the other thread, and at the time, I don't think I was aware that we had new members. Sorry about that, here's a link to that thread: http://www.treksf.com/forums/index.php?topic=3092.0

Five Forward is our "lets all have a drink hang out". This program is meant as an opportunity to explore multiple story lines.  The Old West is great, I like it because it was my suggestion :D. But it's been done tooâ€"remember A Fist Full Of Datas? I think we're all creative enough to make any of these suggestions work.  I personally think that a Vulcan Science Officer, forced to walk into any of these programs, would be humorous and I've thought of scenarios for each of these suggestions. ;)

One idea would be to change this program up maybe from season to season and use the top winners as the ones we program in.  That way we get a change of pace each season and everyone will get to do something they voted on.  Just a thought.

I'm looking forward to this as Margon seems to enjoy the holodeck and programming it.  Should be fun.

Just because we have one big holoprogram that everyone uses.. it doesn't mean individuals can't have there own favorite holo programs.. maybe one will catch on and bit the new favorite. Nothing is set in stone.

I agree. just let things flow organically and whatever happens, happens. IF we finally figure out a group setting, great. If it ends up that someone invites others to his/her personal program, then that's fine too.
