Title: RPG Banners
Post by: Jen on March 07, 2008, 11:30:55 AM
If you're new to the RPG, you may notice that several of us have banners at the bottom of our posts, which have the name of our characters and their ranks on them. I used to make these for everyone as soon as they joined the game, but we have had several members who dropped out and still use them. I update old ones when the ranks change and make more when new people join.  It's a bit time consuming, but I think it adds a little class to our game.

I want to make sure that the people who use them are participating in the RPG, so from now on I will be divvying those out to people who have been active in the game for a whole season. It will be like a "coming of age" gift.  :D

You can add a line of code to your banner that, when clicked, will lead people to your character profile. If you want to add this, PM me and I'll send you a RTF file with the code necessary to make this happen.

If you aren't participating anymore, please discontinue use of your RPG banner. They're meant to broadcast that you are a member of the RPG and if you participate anymore they don't serve any purpose other than a decoration. :)

Thanks!
Jen

P.S. I mean saving it to my computer.

Yep.. My plan was to get those done before Season Six. Since I upgraded to Leopard (the newest Mac OS), I lost the ability to use all my creative suite aps except Illustrator. Adobe won't support their older products on Leopard... I'm in the process of purchasing CS3.

Anyway, I haven't tried to use Illustrator (the old program that seems to still be working)... these banners will be my first attempt at a new project. Cross your fingers... hope that it works. Otherwise, I'll have to do the at work on Monday.

King, do you have a new character? I haven't seen a profile and I need that info before I make a new banner.

He does have a new character! I will say that it's a good one that he put a lot of work into and you should get shortly.

OK, Illustrator was wonky and buggy but I successfully edited all the banners. It occurred to me that since Tiberius no longer exists everyone who has been participating in the previous seasons needs a new banner. I can't give them out until we've told everyone what the new mission is... I'll give Rico a version of his with Tiberius on it... but everyone else has to wait. Sorry Charlie.  ;)

Ok, folks.  Here are the new Arabella character banners.  (Thanks much to Jen for doing these!!).
I will post them here.  You can use the location of the banner image below to adjust your signature or just grab it, save it, and upload it for you signature.  If you have any trouble doing it, let me know and I can help you out (and I'm sure Kenny or Jen would be glad to help as well).

They look fantastic!   :metallica:

This is the type of code to use for your signature.  You will of course have to change the specifics for your sig.  The first part with the link I have linked to my characters profile.  The second part is the location of the banner image.  Hope this helps.

P.S.  Don't forget, you will manually have to adjust your own signature using the new banner above for your own character.

Post by: Jen on April 13, 2008, 12:12:24 PM
Thanks for putting up the example Rico and for hosting the banners for us. Guys something to bare in mind is that the first part of the code he posted, is a link to his character profile. All you have to do is highlight treksinscifi.com/forum/index.php?topic=388.0 and paste your own address where your character profile appears on the forums in place of his (remember to omit the http://www. in your own address so that you don't repeat it in the banner code). This will make your banner clickable... It will take anyone who clicks on it, to your character profile. This feature can be very helpful to you and to others who want to check on some detail pertaining to a specific character. Please use it. :)

And like I said above, you will also have to change the code near the end also to match your image file location and name.

Title: RPG Banner Instructions
Post by: Jen on April 13, 2008, 01:55:09 PM
There were instructions in another thread on how to  create a banner, but all that information is gone now. So here's the break down of how to do this if you've never done it before:

Here's a example code for you to use to copy and edit:

Title: Re: RPG Banners

Hello people. Please update your banners if you are an RPG member. I'm going to remove the duplicate post full of old RPG Banner graphics because I've had several people who were unsure of where the new banners were. If you don't update them, and I delete the old thread, your Tiberius RPG banners will disappear and you'll have a blank box in their place.

Again, if you are no longer writing and have no plan to ever return, please discontinue the use of your banner. They're intended for RPG members only—they are an award of sorts, for active participation.

With Safari, all you have to do is right click the image and copy image address.

then go to your profile and type img (paste the copied address) /img but you have to put the img  and /img in [    ]

Title: Re: RPG Banners
Post by: Jen on April 20, 2009, 06:13:58 PM
If you don't mind, Rico, I'll just send you the Illustrator authoring files for the banners so that you can edit the original rather than the jpgs. Either that or I can send you the exported PDFs that you can update in Adobe Acrobat Pro or Photoshop. That way you can update the layered, higher resolution file and export it anew to maintain the quality...especially if people keep climbing the ranks in the RPG.

I can't keep all the real life/podcast/RPG balls juggling...I'm dropping them here and there. I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed with all the side projects I have going.  It would help me a lot  if you could continue to be in charge of updating the designs I put together. But I would like to be the one who redesigns them in the future if we decided to do that. I just need someone to help update them. :) Thanks for fixing Med's banner.

Okay, new the banners are ready. Please see the previous posts in this thread if you don't know how to attach the banners to your profile. It has been explained in other posts.  I will send banners to writers via email that I know have characters who will not appear until later in the story, or are supposed to remain a secret.

I can't post them all in one post, so see the post below if your banner doesn't appear here. Oh, and I don't usually give banners to newbies because of the work involved in making banners, and the uncertainty of the player's continued participation, but since we only have one new writer this season and I had to redo all the banners anyway, I made one for Crystal. :) Enjoy everyone.

Title: Re: RPG Banners

Just had a thought, is Galdar's banner the correct colour?

From TNG and Voyager, the Conn Officers wore command red e.g. Paris, Geordi (S1), Ro, O'Brien (TNG S1 Ep1). Also, on Enterprise Mayweather wore command colour too. (I'll ignore DS9 since they wore colours for their station positions rather than their Defiant positions.)

And speaking of the red banners, they're different to the other colours (see below). Is that a command privilege?

I'll shut up now. Sorry to be picky :( I throw myself on the mercies of the moderators.

You're welcome. :)

D'Callan is Chief Of Security—security is gold.

I will change Gladar to Red.

There are quite a few of these and they took me a while to redo. I made a few mistakes. The bar underneath the command banner isn't a 'privilege' it's an oversight that I'm not going to fix it because it works aesthetically and honestly I'm a little burned out on banners. I'll make the change to Galdar's banner later this week.

Rick's got a new one in post 43, he's just not using it yet (*nudge* *nudge* Rick!) and Jen's already said that D'Callan gets a gold one when I raised it yesterday (which I still feel incredibly guilty about after all the effort she put in over the weekend).

I was playing around in an animation program and came up with this below.  This one is uploaded Jen to the server.  Feel free to alter your signature and use it if you want.  Thought it was kind of cool and it save a little room at the bottom of your posts.  Feathers - if you like it, I can make one for you too.

Mike - here's yours.  I decided to go ahead and make it while I was at it.

Jen & Feathers - (or anyone with two banners).

I was playing around in an animation program and came up with this below.  This one is uploaded Jen to the server.  Feel free to alter your signature and use it if you want.  Thought it was kind of cool and it save a little room at the bottom of your posts.  Feathers - if you like it, I can make one for you too.

Thanks Rico. I didn't like that my signature was so tall. Your gif solves the problem.  Can I send you the original JPGs so you can make the gif with a fresh file? Mine is suffering from some pixelatation on the portrait of Sevryll.

Yes, I've adopted mine already since it brings the post size down nicely.

Thanks!

Jen - Pixelation on Sevryll?  Boy, I sure don't see that.  You aren't talking about the transition image are you?  I have a huge monitor with very good resolution and I don't see that.  Feel free to send me the original files, but I'm not sure it will change much.  If you don't like it, feel free to keep using the big double image if you want.

I didn't say I don't like it, Rico. :)  I also have a huge monitor with awesome resolution...and super hu-mon vision. Angela says it's my real life super power. ;) Again, thank you.

What resolution and monitor size?  I'm running a Dell 27" at 1920 x 1200.  And again - I don't see it.  And I like to think I can see pretty well too.  Does anyone else see this?

Yeah. The portrait is a bit darker than the other one. There is also a speckled effect in the blue background that seems to wash it out a little bit bit. It kind of looks like a fingerprint swirl in the blue.

Yes - that's part of the animation effect that I was talking about during the transition.  I encoded it for the best quality I could off the banner images.  But an animated .gif file is not by any means the best resolution out there, of course.

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 2232BW 2 ms 3000:1 Dynamic Contrast 1680 X 1050 and Apple HD Cinema widescreen 1920 x 1200 Display. I'll attach a screen shot of what I'm seeing. I don't if the screen shot will help, but the description Chris gave is what I was referring to. You're right about the gif. It further reduces the resolution of the small res jpg, which causes the pixelation. It's just the nature of the beast. :)  That's the only reason I asked if I could send you a freshly exported jpg. When the portrait is reduced, like I've done in the banner, it loses a bit of the detail anyway. :) I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make this into a big deal. As I've mentioned before, I'm a graphic designer by trade. I tend to be a little more picky and sometimes that's to a fault.

This is what happens when you take your work home with you Jen ;)

I think I'm just as protective over my work stuff, but my job has little to no translation into my leisure activities.

Having said that...given that a large part of my job revolves around written words (system requirements), the closest I get is the RPG writing...edit my posts at your peril!

Jen, do you have the ability to make an animated version like I did?  Perhaps it would be best if you handled it.

Herm's been here a whole season. Is he entitled to one of these nifty banners?

Yes, but Jen is the creator of the banners and so please ask her via PM or email
:)

I don't want to bother Jen, she's so busy. Can I make my own?

Well the RPG banners are created and designed by Jen so it's her ownership in creativity terms. You won't be bothering her, just ask.

Sorry, didn't realize they weren't "open source" and were copywritten. I'll bug her.
