Title: Character Portraits
Post by: Jen on March 14, 2008, 11:47:52 PM
I've been thinking about creating a few paintings of my characters, and then last week during the Microcast, Rico suggested a thread where artists can post their representations of characters. So, here it is... Post renderings of characters here.  :)

Here's my first painting of Sevryll. She's wearing the uniforms we described in Season Five and posted images of in the "uniforms" thread in the OOC section.  :)

wow, that's great!  What kind of paint are you using?  Or is that graphic computer stuff?

NICE!

Love it!  Great job Jen!  I am very curious, what medium you used?  I think I see a Jen-Sevryll resemblance too.  Again, excellent work.  Love the uniform too.

Wow! That's very cool! I like the semi smile! It works perfectly with her new mindset.

Thank you everyone. Yes, I gave her a Mona Lisa smile... not quiet stoic, not quite emotional.

Rico, I sketched her by hand, (the drawing looks nothing like the finished product, as I made several changes after I scanned in the sketch) and then I brought her into Photoshop and began painting over the pencil marks. I used to use acrylics and stretched my own canvas when I painted. I have a closet full of that stuff that just sits there these days. I find myself not enjoying painting and drawing by hand as much...  it really makes things faster and enjoyable (for me) to paint using Photoshop because you can build things on layers, which are easily hidden or removed and you have a wide range of brush tips and other tools at the touch of a key. The only thing I find difficult, is the fact that it's hard to be super detailed...I can't feel the paintbrush in my hand or the paint gliding onto the canvas as I move my hand, but there are many artists and illustrators who use photoshop to create wonderful works of fine art. So since I don't have room for a studio, my Mac will have to do. :)

I'm looking into purchasing a high-end tablet so will have more control over my brush strokes. The good ones are quite expensive, but many designers use them exclusively and are quiet happy with them.

Hey everybody...I initially checked out this site and podcast because I'm really intrigued by this RPG forum.  I'd like nothing more than to jump head first into it.  Realistically...I know that I just don't have the time to commit to it.  I'd have to give up drawing time to sit and write...and I just can't do that.  What I can do, however, is commit some of my drawing time to this RPG...and when I heard the shout out on the latest Ready Room for character images...I thought, "Hey!  I can do that!!"  So...if anyone's interested...I'd be happy to draw up some character images.

Just let me know!

I can make little signature images too for the duty roster...with your image on there.  That would be cool. (sorry...I was just looking at Jen's sig...and thinking that I could do that)

Hey, I'm always interested in seeing my characters in mediums outside of my own head.
Title: Re: Character Portraits

What I think would be awesome is if you read some of the RPG scenes and illustrated them for us. There are quite a few that would make great comic book illustrations.

This is unrealated to the RPG...but I drew this 3 pager recently for a class:  (by the way...page 3 is TERRIBLE, I know...but I did this in like...12 hours and finished that page at like....4 in the morning...)

Well it took a lot of paper and patience, but I think my mojo is finally starting to come back, after all these months. This is the Yuki AI's Avatar.  It is not nearly as embarassing as my last sketch, and I kind of like it just pencil.

Here is the character illustration (ver 1.2.1) of Aeric James.

Since drawing this...the new ship's thread has been put up showing the uniforms in more detail...so I'll be revamping this drawing and recoloring it.

Let me know what you think and also if you'd like me to create a character drawing for your character.

Thanks!

Hawkeye sent me this picture as a reference for his character, Joe. Meds could probably explain who the actor is better than I.  But I think he said the reference image is an actor who portrayed Sherlock Holmes who happens to be the character Joe is based on. Joe's crazy colored eye was cut out in a recent post, so I'm not sure that the eye color in my painting is correct now...but I can change it later if you want Meds.  I'll send you the file via email so you can upload it to your character profile.

Next up Captain Quinn. If you want me to paint a pic of your character, send me your reference picture (preferably a good quality head shot) and subscribe to the Anomaly podcast via our web site (my only request in return for the drawing)... yes... I'm bribing potential listeners.  :)

OH WOW THAT ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that is amazing thanks so much Jen. The eye if fab i don't want to change a thing. If anyone is interested the actor there is Jeremy Brett. The photo is from 1966 and he is aged around 33 the same age as Joe. Jeremy portrayed Sherlock Holmes in the late 80's early 90'2 and has since sadly died. Brett was a fab actor and some might recognize him from My fair lady but also in Battlestar Galactica where he played Lieutenant Nash. He most remembered for his role as Holmes and in my opinion the best Holmes there has ever been. Thanks again Jen that painting is amazing.

You imagined what Sevryll looked like? I didn't even know until I started painting. I guess my descriptions of her in my writing was good enough for you to imagine her?

I'm probably going to redo Sevryll and Joe.. I don't like them anymore. That's common though... that happens to me a lot. I'm not happy with the uniform I painted on Quinn. Just not a good reference pic of our new uniforms. The only thing I have to go by are the STO images.  Maybe I should start painting them in civilian garb...

Yea, I could imagine her.  As I read stories I tend to "create" what people, places, and such would look like.  A lot of it is influenced by how people write.  I doubt I'm unique in this matter.  This tends to have problems when I go to movies obviously.  However, this tends to be an advantage when going from TV to book.

Yeah, I've thought about doing others in the Nemesis era uniforms or in civies. I want to do one of Sevryll in her robes watching her children run over the dunes outside her home... I'll get to it eventually I guess.

I think I used Paint Dabs or Paint Dubs.  Something like that.  Can't recall the exact name.  I'm at work now and don't have Photoshop here.  I'm a BIG novice with Photoshop, but I am forcing myself to use it more lately.  I tend to use Paint Shop Pro a lot because it's quick and simple.  But Photoshop just has so much cool stuff you can do with it.

By the way two cheap Photoshop replacements are Gimp and Pixel.  I haven't used either very much yet, but Google them to learn more.

Though I really wanted to start right away, I've been so busy with life, work, the RPG and podcasts I haven't had a chance to do anymore paintings. Thankfully, there was a lull at work this week which allowed me to work on Zremm on my lunch breaks... hopefully I'll have time to finish the portrait in the next few days. Rico, I found another picture of the same ST The Experience actor, posing in a slightly more flattering position. The highlights and contrasts on his skin are more dramatic. I think you'll like this pose better.

OK, finally finished Zremm. Wow...he was tough. I decided to use  several reference pics to get him right. I did have a pic that Rico sent and I used that as a basis, but because he was a ST The Experience Andorian, I thought I should make him look a little more authentic. I altered his hair, forehead and skin color to be more like the Andorians we see on Enterprise. I'll post two pics so you can see the the reference pics and the work in progress. Hope you like it Rico.

I'll be doing the rest of the portraits in the order I received the requests. Margon was next, but I need a break from blue aliens... So since Eric sent me his request after Rico, I'll paint K'Tan's portrait next.

Thanks... Yeah, I sort of rushed Sevryll's portrait. I'll probably revisit she and D'Callan. Maybe in two separate scenes or something later on.

Thanks for the complement. Garek huh? That's interesting. :)

Here's my portrait of K'Tan. I don't know much about Star Gate, but Eric wanted K'Tan's appearance based on one of the characters from that show. I tried to give him a little of his own character while following your descriptions of him in his Character Profile Eric. Hope you like it. Here's an Avatar to go with the portrait. You guys should put these in your character profiles. Just edit your Character Description sheet and add attach it there. ;)  Sorry it took so long. Margon is next... Again, I'm doing these in the order I got the requests in. And the only payment I wanted was for folks to subscribe to the Anomaly Podcast. ;)

I do? I can't see much of a resemblance other than the dark color of her wig and her oval face. But I'll take that as a complement.   :D  Thank you.

I just need to find a resource image that looks close to what I've already drawn, just to get her skin color and detail just so. I did have about 10 different photo references for Sevryll. She's a blending of all of them and it was difficult to get the realism right. I'll just have to narrow it down to one and stick to that. But, I think Ryla needs a portrait after Margon. I've been itching to paint her.

Thanks for the complements everyone. I really am enjoying these. I have tried to do this as an occupation... in fact I have a Bachelor Of Fine Arts degree with a specialty in painting. I just learned I make more money as a creative professional laying out ads and various other print and web materials. One thing I am thankful for, regarding my  career change, is that I now use my Graphic Design skills to paint. Photoshop CS3 makes painting more enjoyable for me. There's no paint to clean off my brushes. ;)

I haven't found a Bolian reference image that I like yet for Margon... so in the meantime I've been working on a Ryla Drett pic for a few weeks. I think I've discovered that  I'm much pickier when it comes to images of my own characters. Those who want paintings of their characters have provided the images and I go with it.  I have an image of my characters in my mind as I write about them... so it's difficult to find the right model to paint from.  I've put her off for so long because of this.

Anyway, Ryla's portrait is still a week or so out, but I wanted to post a pic of the resource image I'm using, so that you know what she looks like when you read about her this season. I saw this pic on a stock photography site as I was looking for models for a print piece that I was working on at work. As soon as I saw the photo I thought, "that's her!" Aside from the eye color, the lack of spots and the exact hair style, this is basically the vision I had of Ryla Drett in my mind's eye. Major differences: Ryla's eyes are a very light brown, she has bigger diimples and her hair is messier... but hey, it's very, very close. Stay tuned for Margon and Ryla paintings in the near future. :)

Here's my portrait of... guess who. ;)
Does he look familiar?  :D  I'll post my reference pic later.  Rick, I created this file in high resolution so you can have a velvet painting of Margon  to hang in your office.  ;D  I'll print it for you on my Epson Stylus 1280...not sure what it will look like printed. Sometimes these things look better on the monitor because of the light it produces.

I found some really awesome Photoshop CS3 brushes recently that helped me create nicer textures, like the fabric of his shirt. I think I'll go back and tweak a few of my older portraits then move on to Aeric James. Chris, let me know what you want him to look like. I need some good reference images.

Here's my  latest digital painting. Aeric James. Just X sent me a photo several months ago, and I've been plinking away at it since then. I learned some new techniques from a magazine I've been buying called ImagineFX. It has resources for cool textures for photoshop and tutorials on creating concept art for games and films. I enjoy looking at all the art but the articles are very informative. Anyway, here you go Chris...I thought I'd put him in Vulcan robes since he spent time on Vulcan as a 'teen'. Hopefully the web export didn't lessen the quality. I haven't seen it online yet. I think it may be brighter than I wanted it to be. I'll send you a higher res file as well.

I think I'm going to do some things for my own characters now. I haven't painted anything for myself for a while. Then I'll paint some ugly characters... Like K'arath and Galdar. But the Chief Of Engineering is in line next after Ryla and a few scenes I wanted to do...Just so you know my one stipulation when I started doing these was that I would paint portraits for RPG members who also subscribed to Anomaly.  Still stands. Dan and Mike are subscribers. But as far as I know, Bryan has only listened to a few shows. Hint-hint, nudge-nudge. ;)

Actually, he is wearing a uniform...you just see the collar though. I still have the original authoring file. I cropped the exported image to just show his collar. I'll see if I reexport it on Monday and put it up so you can see the rest of his uniform. The captain and XO have red collars. Lt commanders and down, have black collars. I was going by the Star Trek Online costume designs. Our story takes place in the future (several years after Nemesis) so I used the concept drawings from the game for the uniform. I think we outlined that in a OOC post a few seasons back but I have no idea where that post is now. ;)
