Ok so Christmas is not far away and what am i looking forward to. Well apart from a large man in a red suit falling painfully down my chimney its going to be the Doctor Who Christmas special. So far the Christmas specials have been a bit rubbish but the new one with the Cybermen is looking promising.
We know we are getting three specials, probably around 60 mins to 90 mins each and then the rumor going around the Tardis is that Tennant will then step down (boo i say). Well according to British tabloid newspaper 'The Sun' they have just reported the following.
BEEB bosses are more hopeful than ever that David Tennant WILL stay on as Doctor Who — after wooing him with a £1.5million deal.
They had feared the Scot, 37, was sure to quit after filming four more specials of the BBC1 sci-fi hit.
But last night a source said he could stay as the Timelord for the fifth series to be screened in 2010.
As TV Biz revealed, show boss Russell T Davies quit and has been replaced by top writer Steven Moffatt.
The source said: "It will be a new team and David has to meet everyone to make a final decision.
"But we're gearing up to offer him a massive deal. He's interested. Everyone thought he was going, but it's not as open and shut as that."
Filming would not start until autumn 2009, but bosses are believed to want a deal by this autumn.
The actor is making four specials this year instead of a series as he is also playing Hamlet at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
The Christmas episode is now finished.
David's real-life love Georgia Moffett, 23, returns as his daughter Jenny for one of the Who specials.
For me this is great news. One i pay the license fee here in England and i really don't mind my payments going towards Tennants reported pay rise. His acting has got better and better and with his stint in Stratford doing Shakespeare going extremely well i think he has no worries about being Typecast, lets face it he was great in Harry Potter. Keep your eyes on this thread for more Who news.
I thought he was with the girl from Moon Light!
No they split up last year due to not having enough time together.
That was the trailer we had at the end of te last series. Thanks for posting that. Who were on the panel?
Special mini episode from Dr Who at the Proms 27th July 2008.
Music of the Spheres.
This is a special 7 minute mini episode wrote bu Russel T Davies and played during the interval of Doctor Who at the Proms held at The Royal Albert Hall. The bits when the Dr i shouting hello all the crowd at the venuw were shouting back. Great. Hopefully you'll be able to see this episode below i've taken it from YouTube.

This is in todays newspaper.
DOCTOR Who is to face a new evil menace — a mutant Cyberman.
Bosses of the hit BBC1 sci-fi drama plan to unleash the scary mutant in this year's Christmas special.
Cybershade is described as "Cyberman gone bad".
An insider said: "Like we did with the Daleks, we've taken the original robot and made it a bit more sinister.
"The Cybershade is a mutant with some of the looks of the Cybermen — but it is a much darker creation.
"Fans always want something new.
"Just wheeling out Cybermen again would be tame."
New show chief Stephen Moffat has promised a host of new baddies for four Who specials.
He stressed: "We're not in the business of being nostalgic — we're making nostalgia for the future."
Sorry Rose, the Doctor says you're too needy
NEW Doctor Who chief Steven Moffatt says Billie Piper will NOT return to the hit show — because her character Rose is "too needy".
Rose was last seen heading off into the sunset with a clone of the timelord at the end of the fourth series.
TV beauty Billie, 25, is 6½ months pregnant and does not plan to act next year. But Steven — who is taking over from Russell T Davies as writer and executive producer of the show — ruled out a Rose comeback.
He admitted he admired the Doc ditching Rose, saying: "You have to hand it to the Doctor for dumping a slightly needy girlfriend by palming her off on a copy of himself.
"He tried leaving her in a parallel universe and that didn't work!"
Steven was speaking at the Comic Con event in Los Angeles. He also revealed he turned down working with legendary director Steven Spielberg on the film version of Tintin to take on Doctor Who.
He said: "You treat Doctor Who like a sad little fanboy who's just been given an enormous toy to play with."
Steven denied that worried parents would force him to rein in the Doctor Who creepiness in series five of the drama. He joked: "I would say to parents — tough!"
Bosses are still trying to tempt star David Tennant, 37, to make a full return in the new series with a £1.5million offer.
:dalek
This is why Steven is going to be amazing. He's a darker writer and that is a good thing.
Latest Rumours: :dalek

DATES
• The first special is to be televised in April 2009. Running time is an hour.
• The second special will be broadcast on Christmas Day and, again, will be an hour.
• The other two specials will be 45 minutes each and hit the small screen sometime between Boxing Day and January 1st 2010. To clarify - the fourth '2009 Special' may actually be broadcast in 2010.
CASTING
• CATHERINE TATE and BERNARD CRIBBINS are to return as Donna Noble and Wilf respectively.
• JOHN SIMM is to return reprising his role as THE MASTER.
• BRIAN BLESSED is star in one of the specials. It is not clear if he is reprising the role of Yrcanos.
• GEORGIA MOFFETT is returning as The Doctor's daughter, Jenny.
• THE SEA DEVILS are making a return. They were last seen in the 1984 story WARRIORS OF THE DEEP.
• PAUL MCGANN has been said to return as The Eight Doctor by some sources though others (all trusted) say this is not the case but they haven't ruled it out either.
And lastly, another CHILDREN IN NEED special? Could be. Set to appear are: PETER DAVISON, SYLVESTER MCCOY and COLIN BAKER. This has not been sourced as thoroughly as the above bits of info so don't get too excited about it.
I'd be happy for a multi doctor episode but i think it is a BAD BAD idea for Donna to come back. What would be the point in that.
Brian Blessed. That would be a treat. I too wouldn't mind seeing a multi-Doctor episode.
Brian Blessed. "THE DOCTORS ALIVEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Classic Who to come to ITunes USA
Just a couple of weeks following the release of complete seasons of new series Doctor Who on iTunes in the USA, a selection of classic Doctor Who adventures are now available on the download service as well.
While most of the titles released so far have already been made available on DVD, such as "Carnival of Monsters", "Mark of the Rani" and "The Ark in Space", a number of stories have been released that are avaiable nowhere else (with the VHS releases now long out-of-print), like "The Krotons", "The Sun Makers" and "Planet of the Spiders".
The stories are avaiable episodically, and cost $1.99 per episode.
You lucky people. :jawdrop
See, now I need to download iTunes again.
Can't think of another better reason than to do it now my friend.
Well, I don't have a job, so no money. But I'll buy alot of the episodes once I do get a job. All because PBS doesn't have the good doctor on anymore. Last time was like 12 or more years ago.
Well i am doing a thread about Doctor Who the early years so check that out for the meantime. I'm up to Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker will be next.
Well I know all about Tom Baker. And I've downloaded alot of the Baker episodes. It will be nice to get all the parts to a story off iTunes though. It takes a while sometimes to piece together a story from various episodes.
'Doctor Who' Coming To America ... Again
By MICHAEL HINMAN
Aug-27-2008
Reports are starting to circulate that two of the proposed three "Doctor Who" specials planned for 2009 will be filmed in the United States rather than the United Kingdom.
According to News of the World, a BBC source said that such a move -- the first since the 1996 "Doctor Who" film was shot in Vancouver, B.C. as well as San Francisco -- is in response to the show's continued popularity in the United States where it's shown on SciFi Channel.
"Two specials in America, with a U.S. setting and U.S. assistant, will take it to another level," a source told the publication. "David Tennant is already gaining a huge following and this will make him really hot property."
This news comes as SyFy Portal was chasing its own leads on such a report -- but one that came with a different set of reasons. While BBC does boast that its signature program is a hit in America, a lot of the decision to film in the United States has less to do with rewarding audiences on the other end of the Atlantis and more to do with economics.
The British pound is trading strong against the American dollar, which means doing business -- including filming -- is much cheaper to do in the United States than it is in England. Some reports have even surfaced that some of the filming for the final two Harry Potter films will move over to the United States because of the disparity between the two currencies, and as a way for the film to better maximize its budget.
Of course, neither the News of the World nor the SyFy Portal reports have been confirmed by BBC, and should be treated as any rumor would.
Nice. :)
NEWS OF THE WORLD, don't believe a word of it ha ha. Well i'd like to see a change in location so if they do get to film over in them there hills that would bring something new.
This in todays English newspaper The Sun, take it with a oinch of salt but hey good news if it comes true.
DOCTOR Who heartthrob David Tennant is negotiating to play the role in a movie version as part of his big comeback deal.
TV Biz has already told how BBC bosses are wooing the 37-year-old with a £1.5million contract.
And we can now reveal that the star has agreed to make a full fifth series in 2010 if the big screen role can be tagged on to the deal.
Beeb chiefs are in talks about funding for a movie. At the moment Tennant is only signed up to star in four specials next year, as well as a Christmas episode.
Last night, a show source said: "It looks like the film is going to happen in the next few years.
"For ages, BBC Worldwide held the rights and were planning to make a movie, but it got held up and former BBC1 boss Lorraine Heggessey decided to bring back the TV series in 2005.
"But everyone is keen now and the fans are clamouring. Part of David's conundrum is that he wants to do films, so this looks like it would solve both issues."
Both outgoing show boss Russell T. Davies and his successor Steven Moffat have already voiced their support for the film.
Yesterday, Davies told us he would love Catherine Zeta Jones to be the Doctor's companion on the big screen. And last month Moffat said: "It would be good to see it in the cinema so long as it's fantastic."
David, who has wowed critics as Hamlet on stage, has already filmed the Dr Who Christmas episode. Catherine Tate is set to return as Donna Noble in one of the specials.
Two previous big-screen versions of Dr Who have been made, starring Peter Cushing in 1965 and Paul McGann in 1996.
Here's another story about him doing the movie.
Tennant Set For "Doctor Who" Movie?
By Garth FranklinThursday, September 11th 2008 12:11am
David Tennant is in negotiations for a new film version of "Doctor Who" says The Telegraph.
The actor, currently only contracted for five more episodes, has reportedly agreed to reprise his role as the tenth Doctor in a full fifth season in 2010 if the big screen role can be added to a new deal.
"For ages, BBC Worldwide held the rights and were planning to make a movie, but it got held up and former BBC1 boss Lorraine Heggessey decided to bring back the TV series in 2005. But everyone is keen now and the fans are clamouring. Part of David's conundrum is that he wants to do films, so this looks like it would solve both issues" says a source.
BBC managers are seeking funding for the film and outgoing producer Russell T. Davies revealed he would like Catherine Zeta Jones to play the Doctor's companion in a film version.
Incoming producer Steven Moffat is also keen on the idea, saying last month that "It would be good to see it in the cinema so long as it's fantastic."
Two previous film versions of the series have been made. Peter Cushing took the lead role in 1965, and Paul McGann starred as the Time Lord in 1996.
More news on The new series.
FORMER Doctor Who Paul McGann is making a surprise comeback to the Tardis next year.
The star of cult movie Withnail And I played the eighth Doc in a one-off TV film collaboration between the BBC and Fox in 1996.
But a follow-up series was never made and when the sci-fi show eventually returned to the Beeb in 2005, it starred Christopher Eccleston, 44, as the new Time Lord.
But Paul, 48, reprised his role in several audio adventures — some broadcast on radio — and has remained a firm favourite with fans.
He is expected to begin filming in October or November for one of four feature-length specials to be shown instead of a series in 2009.
Flashback scenes will see him battered from the Time War and shorn of the long hair he had in the film.
An insider said: "Fans loved Paul's Doctor and feel he was never given the proper chance to shine. Reference is often made to the Time War which wiped out the Time Lords and this will give them a taste of that."
Current Doc David Tennant will also appear.
Sounds great!
It does sound good. I look forward to this all being true!
The rumour of Paul Mcgann being in the next series/specials is a pretty big thing, we all want to know about the time war and how cool would it be to see Mcgann in action, plus we may even get to see the regeneration of the 8th to the 9th doctor.
Meds - is Mcgann's one shot film as the Doctor out on DVD?

I think it is Rico. It was the one shown on Fox years ago.
It's certainly out in the UK - I can find it on Amazon.co.uk and play.com link here (http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/92573/Doctor-Who-The-Movie/Product.html?source=5001&engine=adwords!10246&keyword=Doctor+Who%3a+The+Movie+Dr+Who&match_type=)
I don't know if there was ever a US release.
The BBC has denied that PAUL MCGANN is returning to the show as The Eighth Doctor, a spokesperson said: "There is no truth to the story at all." Meanwhile, inside sources say that he is definitely involved in one of the specials. :spidey
The BBC devilish cretins of the highest order.

Doctor Who and JK Rowling...
The (Almost) Case of Doctor Who and JKR
J.K. Rowling

Great leaping Tardis! New reports are online tonight regarding how Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling had been favored to be a guest on the popular UK program Doctor Who for the Christmas 2007 show. The BBC is reporting that Doctor Who writer Russell T Davies had wanted Jo to star in the episode, however the star of the program, actor David Tennant (Barty Crouch Jr.) nixed the idea. "David doesn't like the JK idea, he thinks it sounds like a spoof, so we've paused slightly, wondering whether to win him round or just abandon something that he's not going to be happy with," Davies said.
Excerpts from new book by the chief writer are detailed in the Times newspaper and we can read more of the plan for the purposed J.K. Rowling guest shot as follows in an email exchange:

I had an idea on holiday. Such a mad idea that I phoned Julie, to start setting it in motion. I was in the shower on Saturday morning (you may avert your eyes), thinking about how much I'd enjoyed that last Harry Potter book, how I'd love to write something like that, remembering that, back in 2004, I asked J.K.Rowling to write an episode of Doctor Who, though she politely declined, and reflecting that we can't possibly get someone to star in next year's Christmas Special who's as famous as Kylie...when all those things coalesced. BAM! I thought, don't ask J.K. to write a Doctor Who, ask her to be in a Doctor Who! We've done Dickens, Shakespeare, Agatha Christie...why should kids think that all great authors are dead? Imagine it. A cold Edinburgh Christmas Eve. J.K.Rowling walking through the snow, pursued by a journalist. "What are you going to write after Harry Potter?"
The diffcult second album...Later, J.K. sits down to write. At the same time, a Space Bug (maybe the same as Donna's time-psych creature in 4.11), probably put there by the Rita Skeeter-type journalist, leaps onto her back. ZAP!
J.K.'s imagination becomes real! A world of Victorian magic replaces the present-day world. The Doctor arrives and has to battle through a world of witches and wizards, with wands and spells and CGI wonders, to reach J.K. Rowling at the heart of it all... That's either brilliant or more like a Blue Peter crossover.
But worth trying. It's different, certainly. So, Julie is trying to set up a meeting with J.K. ...Imagine those opening titles: DAVID TENNANT flying at you, then J.K.ROWLING!...Imagine the Doctor in a world of magic made real – that would be glorious. So, there we go. That's under way.

Christmas 2008 is steaming up on the horizon! I should be writing that in January. That's like tomorrow! That could be J.K. Rowling, or Cybermen in Victorian London [This was Davies's first idea]. David doesn't like the J.K. idea, he thinks it sounds like a spoof, so we've paused slightly, wondering whether to win him round or just abandon something that he's not going to be happy with. We've got to keep him happy. He keeps us happy. (You should see the rushes of him and Catherine [Tate] chasing Agatha Christie in vintage cars – it's a hoot!) Plus, he might be right. So that idea has parked itself, while Julie tries to find ways to approach J.K. anyway. And I doubt we'd ever get J.K. – she doesn't need to do it – so Cybermen in the snow are hauling themselves back into my head.
New Doctor could be.............
DAVID TENNANT may not have quit as Doctor Who quite yet but executive producer Russell T Davies already has ideas about who should take over as the Time Lord.
The Swansea-born writer, responsible for bringing back the BBC Wales-produced series, wants Russell Tovey to take over from the Scottish actor, who has won a series of awards for the role.
In e-mails serialized in The Times newspaper, Davies said Tovey, who appeared in Alan Bennett's play The History Boys, would make a great Doctor.Davies, who leaves the show next year as lead writer and executive producer, said he thought Tovey was "going to be huge" and is "amazing". Tovey, 26, had a part in last year's Christmas Doctor Who special as the heroic Midshipman Frame aboard the ill-fated Starship Titanic. They also reveal that Hollywood actor Dennis Hopper was keen to appear in Doctor Who, but was not "available for that many days" to film. I'm not too sure about this if I am honest. I'm kind of hoping for an older Doctor.
I'd go with you on that. 'Too young' is my first thought.
Having watched Merlin on Saturday, Richard Wilson in a long wig would make an interesting 'grouchy Doctor'....OK, perhaps not - I can just see the pre-christmas episode:
"What!"
"What!"
"What!"
"I don't believe it!"
...maybe not.
The BBC have just announced the title for the 2008Christmas episode.
The Next Doctor.
Ooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A litle misdirection in the title I suspect...
Oh yeah, a bit like The Doctors daughter, that was a sneaky title.
Maybe the Next Doctor is referring to the fact that the Doctor did regenerate in the last episode of season 5, just didn't change. Maybe there's some sort of side effect that Tennant's Doctor has to go through.
SPOILER SPOILER

Stewart interested in guest role on "Doctor Who"
October 2, 2008 by Michael Hickerson || Category: TV
Patrick Stewart is enjoying working with David Tennant so much in the much-heralded stage production of "Hamlet," that he has expressed an interest in guest-starring in an upcoming episode of "Doctor Who."
According to Den of Geek, Stewart would be open to a role in the upcoming specials or series five. Rumors are springing up on-line that Stewart could play the Doctor's old nemesis, the Meddling Monk, last seen during the William Hartnell era.
Some outlets are reporting that Stewart's role wouldn't be a "one and done" villian but a more recurring character and/or nemesis for the Doctor.
At this point, any casting news is purely speculation and hopeful thinking. Stewart has not been cast in any role on the show, but as soon as we hear anything confirmed, we'll bring you the news right here at Slice of SciFi.
And if you want to find out more about the Meddling Monk, you can pick up the DVD release of "The Time Meddler" or check out the episodes of "The Dalek Masterplan" included in the Lost in Time box-set.
Ah Mortimus otherwise known as The Meddling Monk, a great character. The only downside to that and this is very picky is that he is a Time Lord and as we know The Doctor is meant to be the last of the Time Lords (bar The Master). I would love to see Patrick Stewart in this role, would be brilliant.
DOCTOR WHO ANIMATION SCREENING.
This year's Flip Animation Festival, held in the city of Wolverhampton, features a special screening of the animated episodes from the 1968 Patrick Troughton story The Invasion.
The episodes were lost but in 2006 they were meticulously reconstructed using audio recorded off-air by fans mixed with newly created animation courtesy of Cosgrove Hall. These animated reconstructions have been warmly received and this is a chance to see them on the big screen.
The screening will be followed by an opportunity to find out more about how and why the animated episodes were commissioned, whether there may be further productions in the future and to meet some of the people responsible for making them. The talk will also highlight the world of Doctor Who fan animation.
Speakers Include
* James Goss, who ran the BBC's Doctor Who website for seven years and as part of this he produced the BBC's first webcasts, and commissioned the Invasion animations. He produced the BBC One animation Doctor Who: The Infinite Quest and has written a Torchwood book.
* Jon Doyle, from Firestep Productions, 2 x Bafta winning Animation Producer/Director/Artist whose work includes the animated series Scream of the Shalka, The Invasion and The Infinite Quest.
* Rob Ritchie, fan animator and producer of a raft of well received Doctor Who clips. Rob is contributor to the Who3d feature film project and he created Doctor Who 3d visuals for the stage play, The Trial of Davros.
The panel will be chaired by Myles McLeod, of animation duo The Brothers Mcleod.
The showing is on November 8th and is scheduled to start at 11.15pm. Please note this is a free event, and places will be allocated on a first come first served basis, so please arrive early to pick up a ticket.

I'd love to see PS doing anything in DW. That would be great! (Brining back another Time Lord as well as The Master may be a step too far though.)
CONFESSION TIME
I know this will shock Mesd but I've never sat down and watched the Hartnell episodes. (If nothing else, Peter Purves as an actor put me off). It's a fault I may have to rectify.

Oh dear, ha ha. No worries there is plenty of time. I've done a thread on this forum devoted to classic who called Doctor Who. The Early Years and the first ever (actually its the un-aired pilot) Doctor Who episode An Unearthly Child. You can pick up The Beginning Box Set for £10.99 which i really do recommend.
http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/848515/Doctor-Who-The-Beginning-Box-Set/Product.html
And give it a go, hell if you don't like it you can sell it on Ebay but I really do think that you will enjoy them especially when i believe black and white adds more tension. If you want to see An Unearthly Child but don't want to buy it shoot me a PM with your address and I'll erm ahem send you a copy ahem!!
I bought the Beginning Box Set about a year ago. Me and a good buddy of mine really want to see some Hartnell era. It's old, but it's fun to watch. We enjoyed it, for two high school teenagers that's probably saying a lot.
Nice one Shep, Its great to see younger people watching early Who. I always say to people when watching 60's Dr Who put yourself in 1963, think about the fact that this is ground breaking TV, Hartnell is great as the first Dr and its sad that he became very Ill towards the end of his tenure but he still pulls off some marvelous stories.
I would really like to watch some more of the classic series, but there's so much that I could buy or find to watch, I really don't know which is worth watching first.
Any suggestions from those of you who know the classic series pretty well? What episodes do you suggest I try to find?
Well as you have already seen the first stories I would then go for (these are on DVd there are loads i would recommend that are not yet realesed) the excellent Dalek Invasion earth which is a Hartnell story, Then go for Tomb of the Cybermen a Patrick Troughton story, great story that. The Seeds of Death another Troughton story is good .Pertwee stories are mainly on Earth but stand out story is The Sea Devils, The Three Doctors and The Green Death. Thats hould get you going for a bit ;)
Seen the Three Doctors already, I'll check out the others when I can. My thoughts on this are that there are so many DVDs for Classic Doctor Who and money being a little limited I want to get the onces that would be most worth my money.
Thats the reason why i chose those DVD's
Meds,
Watching Doctor Who's current seasons is kind of frustrating for me. Most of the time when I watch TV, I watch it together with my wife Tammy. Though she loves Torchwood, she gets pretty lost fast with the Doctor. She kinda doesn't get it. I sneek a few viewings in every once in a while on the weekends but can never catch up. One thing that is great we have both BBC America and HDNET on our cable system to watch the Doctor and Torchwood on. We watch the current episodes on BBC America in standard DEF and the HDNET airings are one week back but in HIGH DEF. My god these shows in HIGH DEF sparkle! :jawdrop Especially Torchwood! Really looking forward to that new season.
Oh yeah its made for the HD market and i'm glad you get to see it in such glory. I have a simialr problem, my wife, Natalie drifts off half way through, saying that though I am a nightmare to sit with when Who is on because no one is allowed to speak, I have even been known to turn the phones off. I'd opt for the 'why don't you go out with the girls for the day honey' and then have Dr Who taped and sit back with a cold one and enjoy some blue box heaven on your own. Hmmmm I'm onto something here ;) Torchwood I'm no a big fan but i will say it does look fantastic.
Guess I'm lucky and another plus for being gay :).. Harry and I both love Who and Torchwood.. and Rob you need to watch Who and Torchwood on DVD when they come out as the ones on BBC America are edited down and censored.
Oh really are they edited Kenny, thats pretty crap isn't it, Why have they done that? Dr Who and Torchwood are broadcast at peak times here (eg 6.45pm)

Guess I'm lucky and another plus for being gay :).. Harry and I both love Who and Torchwood.. and Rob you need to watch Who and Torchwood on DVD when they come out as the ones on BBC America are edited down and censored.
Wow, if they censor the other stuff then the the season 2 Jack/John passion man kiss then yikes what is censored?
Actually, I've found that the Sci-Fi Channel edits just a little more out than BBC America, which is kind of sad when you look at it. When I recorded "The Sound of Drums" on Sci-Fi, they cut out the part where the Doctor mentions how a new device he made is a lot like "fancying someone and they don't know that you exist," and Jack turns to Martha and says, "You too, huh?" Very sad because it's one of my favorite moments with Jack. :(
Yeah I very rarely watch them off sci fi or BBC America.. I torrent them when the originally air in the UK then when they come out on DVD.. I buy the DVD box set... it's the only way to go. :)
When I have the funds, I will definitely buy the DVD boxset. Until then, DVR is the only cheap way to go. *sigh* :-\
Can you rent them on netflix (is that the right name?)
I watch them on Scifi cause I figure I'm supporting Doctor Who, but not before watching an unedited torrent version of them. I just can't stand how much is edited out.
I watched Season 1 on Scifi and loved it, but I thought there were a lot of Plot Holes at times, not saying it still wasn't awesome, but I bought Season 1 on DVD and I was shocked at how much I had missed when watching Scifi. Almost everything I had wondered about were completely cleared up.

Big "Doctor Who" casting rumor
October 9, 2008 by Michael Hickerson || Category: TV
It's still over a year and a half until the fifth series of "Doctor Who" premieres and the guest-star rumor mill is going wild. As we previously reported, actor Patrick Stewart has reportedly expressed an interest in a guest-role on the popular BBC series and now comes news that one of the icons on the show's history wants to come back for a return appearance.
According to a report by SkyTV, the man most associated with the role of the Doctor, Tom Baker, is interested in making an appearance on the show in 2010. Baker played the role of the Doctor for seven seasons in the mid-70's, the longest tenure of any actor as the Doctor and is easily the most identifable Doctor of the original series.
Sky takes their reports from a Sun article, claiming a "Doctor Who" insider said that Baker was in negotations to return. Official sources for the BBC and Tom Baker have declined comment on the rumors.
Baker had previously expressed an interest in returning to the show in the role of the Master. It was never really confirmed if this was an actual desire or Baker being facetious.
Baker played the role from 1974-1981. He has previously turned down an opprtunity to return to his most famous role during the series' twentieth anniversary special, "The Five Doctors" and has not participated in any of the Big Finish audio dramas to date. Baker does participate in commentaries and documentaries for the release of his serials on DVD and has been shown to have a fondness for the role of the fourth Doctor.
As of now, nothing official has been confirmed. It's all rumor and speculation. So, take this one with a grain of salt.

Tennant News at RSC
The BBC News website is reporting that the new Royal Shakespeare Company production of "Love's Labour's Lost", starring David Tennant, has proved a critical hit. The play is being staged in Stratford-upon-Avon in tandem with "Hamlet", in which Tennant also stars, until November 15th.
Says the article: "According to BBC arts correspondent Razia Iqbal, Tennant began rehearsals for Love's Labour's Lost 'almost immediately' after Hamlet opened in August. 'The RSC may have another hit on their hands, which is surprising given the play is Shakespeare's most forgettable early comedy,' she said." The piece also includes praise from critics Neil Norman and Michael Billington, and notes that Tennant performs his role in his native Scottish accent.
A lost sequel to "Love's Labour's Lost", called "Love's Labour's Won", featured in the 2007 Doctor Who episode "The Shakespeare Code", starring Tennant as the Tenth Doctor.
Tom Baker aye, blimey that would be cool. They would have to write the story similar to the Time Crash episode as Tom has changed quite a bit (obviously it was 28 years ago since he played the time lord (bar the awfull children in need 3D episode back in the 90's)). This could be a good idea but I would more like to see Mcgann back and we see flash backs of the Time War.
I don't know about that Meds - Baker was the mainstay of my childhood. As long as he doesn't ham it up too far it would be good to have a reprisal of that role.
You see i'm a 70 Dr Fan so i came into Who world towards the end of Bakers reign so I'm a Davison fan. As long as they do what they did with PD (eg state the time differential) to give the reason for Tom being older. Lets face it I would be over joyed (to the point of exploding) if they had all the doctors together. Ok so you would have to get actors to play the roles of one, two and three (Richard Hurndell did a fine job playing the 1st Dr in the 5 Doctors story), hey you could even get Sean Pertwee to portray his fathers Doctor.
There are a few Troughtons around the acting world too although I'm not convinced that they have quite the right look for this sort of thing.
Davison is second to Baker for me but purely for length of service reasons I think. Were I older, I think Pertwee would hold the crown but I'm a man of my time.
I never liked Colin Baker...and I never watched McCoy.
Colin baker never had a chance. So unfair. He's great on the big finish audio cd's and so is sylvestor.
Yes, I had heard that. Also, after Tom Bakers clown and Peter Davisons youth he was much closer to the mould of the 1st Doctor's abrupt grumpiness which jarred with me a bit.
I'm sure I'll get back round to seeing them at some point.
Children in Need 2008 news.
News services are reporting that this year's Children in Need will feature a special to include all seven living Doctor Who lead actors.
The below report is from the Telegraph. The story also appears in the News of the World and the Sunday Mirror.
[Remember: treat all such news as rumour until confirmed officially by the BBC]
The actors are getting together for the BBC charity Children in Need in a programme to be broadcast on November 14.
An insider at the BBC said: "It's a pretty ambitious idea and it's still being finalised. Everything is being kept under wraps but Doctor Who fans are in for a big treat."
The first of the 10 actors to take the role was William Hartnell in 1963, followed three years later by Patrick Troughton and then by Jon Pertwee but all three have since died.
The seven survivors include Tom Baker, now best known as the voice of the comedy series Little Britain, who played the role for seven years from 1974.
He was followed by Peter Davison from 1981 to 1984, whose daughter Georgia Moffett has also featured in the programme and who is now dating the current doctor, David Tennant.
The others are Colin Baker, from 1984 to 1986, Sylvester McCoy who had two stints from 1987 to 1989 and re-appeared in the role in 1996, Paul McGann, who took over the role in 1996 and Christopher Eccleston who reprised the series in 2005.
Take it with a pinch of salt but how good would this be.
It would be excellent.
I'm not sure I believe it, but Children in Need does seem to pull rabbits out of hats on occasion.
I would be VERY suprised if they got Eccleston. McGann, McCoy, Baker (C) and Davison still play the Doctor in audio form so i'm sure they would jump at the chance, as for Tom well you never know. They need to do more than 8 mins though, it would have to be an hour special for me.
heh all the 6 will be extras as the current one will be doing everything...
David Tennant Considers More 'Doctor Who'
By MICHAEL HINMAN
Oct-13-2008
Another year of "Doctor Who" may not be too bad for actor David Tennant, that is if BBC is willing to front him a raise and offer him a picture deal to go with it.
The actor, who plays the Tenth Doctor in the series, is in negotiations to extend his contract through 2011, according to The Daily Telegraph. The actor already is involved with this year's Christmas special as well as three specials planned for 2009 since the fifth season was delayed to accommodate Tennant's stage schedule.
How much could Tennant get if he stays? It would have to be far more than the £1 million, or $1.74 million. Plus, Tennant wants a "Doctor Who" movie, something the BBC is supposedly seriously considering.
"The BBC is determined to make sure David doesn't go without a fight," a source told News of the World. "He is an integral part of the series."
Some other "Doctor Who" news have been circulating as of late. One is a report by the British media that all seven living actors who have portrayed The Doctor will band together for the annual "Children In Need" charity special that the BBC is involved with each year. Last year, Tennant filmed a "Children In Need" event with one of those former Doctor actors, Peter Davison.
Also, Prince Charles has left the door open for a possible "Doctor Who" cameo. While the initial request from Russell T. Davies was ignored by Charles' office, his officials there say it's likely that they could reconsider if the offer was submitted again, according to Reuters.
"Doctor Who" returns to British television on Christmas Day for its annual Christmas special. Last year's special attracted 13 million viewers.
Multi-Platform Book Range - Full List
All the titles of the forthcoming 10-part multi-platform Doctor Who book project The Darksmith Legacy have been announced.
The first two books will be out in January 2009, followed by a new "episode" every month after that.
Published by BBC Children's Books in association with Penguin Books, they will offer the adventure of a book serialisation, complete with cliffhangers, plus interactivity and content that is only obtainable online.
Previously, only the first three titles and their authors had been confirmed. However, the full list has now been given as follows:
1. The Dust of Ages - Justin Richards
2. The Graves of Mordane - Colin Brake
3. The Colour of Darkness - Richard Dungworth
4. The Depths of Despair - Justin Richards
5. The Vampire of Paris - Steve Cole
6. The Game of Death - Trevor Baxendale
7. The Planet of Oblivion - Justin Richards
8. The Picture of Emptiness - Jacqueline Raynor
9. The Art of War - Mike Tucker
10. The End of Time - Justin Richards
An exclusive preview of The Dust of Ages will be available at www.thedarksmithlegacy.com (http://www.thedarksmithlegacy.com) which will also be hosting the interactivity aspect of the series.
However, the website will not be live until mid-November, although it is hoped that a holding page will be up soon once final approvals are given by the BBC.
David Tennant Leaves Doctor Who
David Tennant will be leaving Doctor Who at the conclusion of the 2009 specials, the actor announced live on stage this evening at the National Television Awards.
The Guardian newspaper this evening broke the story prematurely, reporting on their website (in a report subsequently pulled down) that Tennant is "vacating the TARDIS and leaving the BBC's Doctor Who series at the end of next year. Tennant's decision brings to an end his popular four-year tenure as the time lord." The article went on to say that the BBC had confirmed that the actor "would complete the filming of four special episodes to be screened this year and in early 2010, as well as 2009's Christmas special."
The BBC Doctor Who website has now posted the full news: "I've had the most brilliant, bewildering and life changing time working on Doctor Who. I have loved every day of it," the actor says. "It would be very easy to cling on to the TARDIS console forever and I fear that if I don't take a deep breath and make the decision to move on now, then I simply never will. ... I'm still the Doctor all next year but when the time finally comes I'll be honoured to hand on the best job in the world to the next lucky git - whoever that may be." Tennant added that he "always thought the time to leave would be in conjunction with Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner who have been such a huge part of it all for me. Steven Moffat is the most brilliant and exciting writer, the only possible successor to Russell and it was sorely tempting to be part of his amazing new plans for the show. I will be there, glued to my TV when his stories begin in 2010." He furthermore says that he feels "very privileged to have been part of this incredible phenomenon, and whilst I'm looking forward to new challenges I know I'll always be very proud to be the Tenth Doctor." Says Russell T Davies, "I've been lucky and honoured to work with David over the past few years - and it's not over yet, the Tenth Doctor still has five spectacular hours left! After which, I might drop an anvil on his head. Or maybe a piano. A radioactive piano. But we're planning the most enormous and spectacular ending, so keep watching!"
More details soon!
I'm sad to see him go.. but at least we know for sure now.. I wonder who they will get to replace him.
Bad news, but I suppose it's not really unexpected as it's been rumoured often enough now (though I'm sure this probably contradicts something I said earlier in this thread).
Can we vote for Meds as the eleventh Doctor?
I'm just in touch with one of my mates who i work with on the danger signs and we're in converse right now. I'm for Robert Carlye.
I can see it, but the idea makes me nervous for some reason I can't quite put my finger on. Sadly, I think John Simm would have been an interesting choice but that ship has obviously sailed.
I haven't made my mind up on my choice yet as you can probably tell.
Feathers i accept the challenge of becoming teh 11th Doctor ha ha. For me i's like to see Richard Coyle seen below.
I definitely like the idea of Richard Coyle, Meds. I still don't personally know who I would cast as the Doctor as of right now...
Hmm the next doctor? that's hard.
I'd loved to see Kevin McKidd in the role, but that's just me loving Rome and wanting him to have a job that's not yanked from him like Journeyman.
I"d also like to see ... hmm don't know yet.
But McKidd does have a season as a Time and space traveler. I think it might work well.
Nice choice Chris. Outside contender could be Robert Carlyle, he'd make a good dark Doctor but wether he would commit to three series is the question. I as i said above would like Richard Coyle, or go back to the stories of the 8th Doctor with Paul McGann. His big finish stories have been brilliant and his Doctor is very charismatic. We'd then get to see The Time War.
I'm going to really miss David in the role. He was just perfect for me. Can't wait to see those last specials with him. Hopefully they'll give him a grand exit.
Oh, I like your idea too Chris of Kevin McKidd. He could be a more action/physical type Doctor.

David Tennant quits 'Doctor Who'; is Russell Tovey the next Time Lord?
Truly sad news just came across the Atlantic. The BBC has an exclusive interview with video announcing that the 10th (and maybe the best) actor to play Doctor Who is moving on.
David Tennant is to stand down as Doctor Who, after becoming one of the most popular Time Lords in the history of the BBC science fiction show.
Tennant stepped into the Tardis in 2005, and will leave the role after four special episodes are broadcast next year. He made the announcement after winning the outstanding drama performance prize at the National Television Awards.
"When Doctor Who returns in 2010 it won't be with me," he said.
"Now don't make me cry," he added. "I love this part, and I love this show so much that if I don't take a deep breath and move on now I never will, and you'll be wheeling me out of the Tardis in my bath chair."
Three years was "about the right time" to play the role, he told the BBC in an exclusive interview.
"I think it's better to go when there's a chance that people might miss you, rather than to hang around and outstay your welcome," he said.
More from the BBC article:
His stint in the show had been "the most extraordinary time, it's been bewildering, life changing, very exciting", he said.
"And just so much fun, such a great show to work on. That's one of the reasons I think it's right to take a deep breath and bow out when it's still fun, when it's a novelty. I don't ever want it to feel like a job, so I want to move on when it still feels exciting and fresh and that means I'll miss it."
After the mourning period comes the obvious question: Who's the best person to play the Time Lord now? The BBC has a second article with an interesting suggestion from one of the key architects of the recent revival of the good Doctor.
Russell_tovey "Doctor Who" writer Russell T Davies has suggested who he thinks should replace David Tennant as the next Time Lord. In e-mails serialised in The Times newspaper, Davies said Russell Tovey, who appeared in Alan Bennett's play "The History Boys," would fit the role.
The creator, who leaves the show next year as lead writer and executive producer, said he thought Tovey was "going to be huge" and is "amazing". Davies also revealed he had wanted JK Rowling to star in a Christmas special.
"Who" fans might know that Tovey was in last year's Christmas special in which he played a midshipman (photo on right), but his most notable performance to date was on stage and in the film "History Boys." You can see him below, third from the right.
This will be a hot topic for months. Any suggestions who else might be good to hop aboard into the Tardis?
-- Geoff Boucher
I'm liking the idea of Kevin Mckidd. I said to Kc earlier today that the chances are is that the new Doctor has already been chosen. Remember David was already cast as the Eccleston series began.
Kevin McKid would be very cool.
Richard Coyle will not be the doctor for me (until he gets the job) He will always be the Scottish guy from coupling.
Posted in todays Sun Newspaper.
An article appearing in The Sun quotes comments incoming showrunner Steven Moffat made to Doctor Who Magazine in 1999, using them to suggest that the casting of the next Doctor could go to an older actor.
Moffat is quoted as saying: "Although I loved Peter Davison and Paul McGann, probably the best two actors in the role, I don't think young, dashing Doctors are right at all.
"He should be 40-plus and weird-looking — the kind of wacky grandfather kids know on sight to be secretly one of them."
The article also speculates that the next lead actor will be well-known, quoting Moffat as having said: "Any actor with the 'right stuff' is unlikely to be a complete unknown."
David Tennant continues in the role of the Doctor through the 2009 television specials and a new Doctor will be introduced when Moffat takes the reins in 2010.
Interesting. I kind of go with the older image (though now I'm 40 I'm not sure I like the definition used!). Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Baker all worked well for me. I believe Davison has said that he'd have been a better Doctor if he'd been older.
I love Eccleston and Tennant in the 'new' role also but another 5 or 10 years may make for a good compromise.
I'll be interested to see how it all plays out.
New name being put forward at the moment is comic Eddie Izzard.
More news from Oupost Gallifrey.
Presenter Terry Wogan has reported on his radio show that the next Doctor might be announced in this year's Children In Need show. Although nothing has appeared officially to confirm this, Wired suggests that such an announcement would be a good fund-raiser for the event.
David Tennant appeared on BBC's Breakfast on Monday, and during the interview indicated that he wouldn't rule out returning to the show at some point in the future. He also mentioned that Steven Moffat's appointment had almost swayed his decision to leave (something that he and Russell T Davies had agreed upon some months previously). On the inevitable subject of a good female contender for the role, he lightly suggested his former co-star Billie Piper.
Based on the interview, Den of Geek speculated on how he might return to the role, whilst the South Wales Echo concentrated on the Piper connection - also noting that the odds from William Hill on a female Doctor had now been lowered from 20/1 to 12/1 after the interview. Meanwhile, Lucy Mangan of the Guardian commented on her husband's view of a female in the part and why she thinks it would be a good move for the show. (Other stories related to the Breakfast interview from BBC News, Reuters, Press Association, Wales Online, Telegraph, Daily Mail, Now, Melbourne Herald)
Meanwhile, speculation on who would take up the mantle continues apace in the media!
Back in 1999, DWM ran an article in which well-known fans at the time commented on how they'd like to see the Doctor return. One of those was new head writer Steven Moffat, in which he suggested an older actor for the role, a "grandfather" figure. In spite of a decade between this and the production of Moffat's series next year, this hasn't stopped The Sun from revitalising these anecdotes! [see below] (Story also taken up by MyPark Magazine and BBC America's Anglophenia)
The Mirror reports that ex-EastEnders actor Tom Ellis is under consideration - Ellis was previously seen in the series as Tom Milligan in The Last Of The Time Lords. (Story also taken up by RTE and Now)
Additional news on Tennant leaving and speculation on casting can be found in: Evening Post, Wales on Sunday, io9, Guardian.

ha ha very good. What a dream episode that would be.
It's interesting seeing David Morrisey at 2/1 given his appearance in the upcoming chistmas special - 'The Next Doctor'.
There's a short article and picture in this weeks' Radio Times stating that Children in Need will be showing the first two minutes of that - it looks like they may have catered for CiN diretly in the christmas special shoot.
So Morrisey for the Next Doctor. Too obvious or a double blind?
Too obvious, though he world make a great Dr (apart from being in Basic Instinct 2 boo! ). I'm still hoping for a darker, brooding actor.
Here it is.. the Children in Need Two Minute Preview of the Next Doctor Who Christmas Special.

WOW.. that as pretty sweet... not a clue what's going on.. but very cool.. a little over a month to go.
Its very, very similar to the plot of the Big Finish audio adventure 'The One Doctor' Of course i'm not saying thats going to be the exact story.
I think judging by how David Morrissey is playing the part he won't be the new Doctor.
I agree - I looked at that and my instant thought was that whatever else was going to happen, the wasn't going to be the real next Doctor.
Did anyone else notice that his sonic scewdriver was an actual screwdriver

I was talking about they fact that Meds said "it's very very similar to the plot of the big finish audio adventure The One Doctor" .. and I asked who can you tell from this two minute clip. I didn't get anything about the plot of the episode excpet there seems to be two doctors.
Well for me the Morrissey Doctor is pretending to be more like Tennants Doctor, eg the wink and the stand back together. Too similar in their characteristics plus as well his theatrical OTT English accent. Also he didn't recognize the 10th Doctor or the Cybermen head.
I mention The One Doctor simply because i'd already heard about the similarities about two weeks ago. Of course nothing can be certain and the audio book is quite a simple affair but enjoyable. I'm not jumping to a serious conclusion.
Check this out for the one doctor story details.

I'm excited about this episode (its being played again on BBC 1 now) its has a nice Christmas feel about it and i love England in 1851 ( bit dull) and yeah it is a screwdriver.
Hmm i like your screwdriver.
I think that the first two minutes are shot beautifully and the costumes look gorgeous. December is too far away...
Nice theory on The Tin Dog podcast today. He mentioned that everything looked too clean to be Victorian England, and that this culd almosty be a Dr theme park. Nice idea.
Great news yesterday. It was announced that 9 lost episodes form classic Dr Who have been found in Thailand. Of course rumour at the moment is is that this news will be confirmed on Sunday as it will be the 45th Anniversary of Doctor Who on that day. Lets wait and see.
I did think the line "Are you thick or wot?" or whatever it was wasn't particularly Victorian.
And the fact that the people in the crowd look out of place, some of the men have long hair, the main woman in the clip looks like she is wearing a wig so maybe this is like a RPG, you go into a game where you can be the Doctors companion, this would make sense when she says "there can't be two of you"
So we've got just under a month before we get to see the excellent looking Christmas special so what to do, dum de dum de dum, well i ofund a great ultimate Doctor Who theme mix on good old youtube with clips of all the Doctors put to their own version of the theme. Its 8 mins long so take a look if you fancy a bit of Who nostalgia and the theme tune.

Colin Salmon to be first black Doctor Who?

Colin Salmon to be first black Doctor Who?
Another day, another potential candidate for the Doctor Who job - it's been reported that actor Colin Salmon could become the first black Time Lord.
BBC bosses are apparently keen for the James Bond star to replace David Tennant, who leaves in 2009, according to The Sun.
Colin, best known for playing M's assistant in three 007 films, appeared as Dr Moon in the sci-fi series earlier this year.
A BBC source told the paper: "He made a good impression when he appeared and bosses think the time is right to have the first black Doctor."
Colin was also tipped to land the Bond role before it went to Daniel Craig, currently appearing on the big screen in Quantum of Solace.
And in an interview with the Telegraph on Thursday, Daniel said that Barack Obama's victory in the US presidential elections paved the way for the first black Bond.
He said: "I think the role could easily be played by a black actor, because the character created by Ian Fleming in the Fifties has undergone a great deal of evolution and continues to be updated."
Interesting idea, but...rumours, rumours rumours!
On another tack, I read that as well as more Cybermen at Christmas, we'll get something called Cybershades. Other than the fact that they move somewhat faster than Cybermen, nothing else is revealed.

New Cover for the Radio Times.
Is this for the Christmas edition? I assume it must be but I've never come across them published up front before.
Do they always do it?
No mate its for next week (if you look at the top it says 6th to 12th December. Its an open up cover. Looks good aye. Classic Dr Who pose.
Ah, OK. I was looking at it on my phone so it was all a bit small to read. It's all rather clear on the big screen.
Would that be a CyberLeader on the left do you think?
(And an interview with Richard Armitage - Spooks is as good as ever this series too :offtopic)
They are called The Cybershade a new form of Cybermen, they move quicker.
Oh that's them?
I was expecting something smaller and more mobile for some reason, not simply a different mask.
Oh well, it shows I've done 0 research on this one doesn't it :)
Thats what i'm here for ha ha ;)

Still think the guy on the Radio Times is a CyberShade? I reakon they're the furry things on 4 legs with the golden faces. Not sure I'm that impressed if they are though.
We'll see!
Hmm yeah after seeing the new bits they do look kind of like a dog with a bad mask on. New clips on youtube from the BBC site, UK only though.
I wish I could see the Christmas special. Living in the colonies has it's downside. :(

Naughty Americans hee hee. New snippets of Doctor Who Christmas special here in the BBC's Christmas look. Not sure if this will play everywhere.

Hmmm. Some of those Who scenes back up the 'not completely a period piece view, don't they?'
Yup, and you do get a carnival feel to it.
DVD cover for The Next Doctor.
I can just see Morrisey as the next assistant. Don't think it will happen but I could read it into the picture if I squinted a bit.
You know what Mike, I would love to see a male assistant. We haven't had a male companion since Vislor Turlough (long standing companion Harkness and Mickey don't count).
Turlough. Wow, that was a long time ago. Grumpy guy as I recall.
Yes, a more long standing male companion would be good fun. I'm not sure how I'd like to see the character written though. Someone too capable may detract from the Doctor but a beer swilling lout wouldn't exactly enhance the series either.
Well it would make a change from the irritating 'love story' scenario's we seem to expect from RTD. The male companion is hard to write, Adric was just irritating (although i actually liked him), Turlough was initially sent to kill the Dr, the others (heading back to the 60's) were fairly strong minded and didn't get in the way of the Dr's importance. Someone like Steven Taylor or Harry Sullivan would be ideal.
Anothe Harry may work but just because the companion would be male doesn't necesarily remove the love interest angle though I hope that approach remains dead for a while.
That was one thing about the Donna character - at least she was just a friend.
Trouble in store.
David Tennant is putting the filming of his last Doctor Who episodes in jeopardy – because of his slow recovery from back surgery.
The 37-year-old actor is struggling to recuperate from his operation last week after suffering a prolapsed disc in November.
David's injury meant he had to pull out of his role in the stage production of Hamlet until after Christmas – and now it seems it could affect the filming of Doctor Who too.
There are fears he will not be well enough to appear as the Time Lord for the last time when four episodes of the show are due to be made in Cardiff next month.
Medics believe it could take him up to three months to recover from the op.
He was not considered well enough to attend today's advanced screening of the Doctor Who Christmas Day special.
The four new shows will be the last time he stars in the programme, after announcing he was quitting the cult series earlier this year.
All Ten Doctors to appear in Christmas special.
From Todays Sun Newspaper.
ALL TEN Timelords will appear in the explosive Dr Who Christmas special.
Producers travelled back in time to pick out old footage of the actors. Three are now dead.
Show chief Russell T Davies said: "It's nice for fans to see the old doctors. And it helps kids get their heads round the fact there have been lots of them."
The ten, from William Hartnell in 1963 to the latest David Tennant, will appear in The Next Doctor alongside new foes, the Cybershades. They are hairy, mutant cousins of the evil Cybermen — but they're not the only enemy the Doc faces.
TV Biz saw a sneak preview of the action-packed Christmas Day show in which a huge robot Cyber King, controlled by sinister Mercy Hartigan (Dervla Kerwan), stalks Victorian London.
There is also a crucial scene in which the Doctor attempts to get ANOTHER Doc — played by David Morrissey — to understand the succession of Timelords.
Fans also see sidekick Rosita (Velile Tshabalala) and an early Tardis — a rickety hot air balloon.
I do so envy you Brits.

You have to let us have at least something first. ;)
Well that does look interesting but I hope they plumb it into the story rather than making it a gratuitous sop to the old fans (like me).
Less than a week to go until we find out!
It would certainly make a change to give a massive nod to the classic fans, plus of course you'll get all the new fans wanting to know more about these past Doctors and for me thats very important. So looking forward to the Christmas episode, the past have frankly been poor and this one looks like its going to be the best so far.
SPOILER FREE... :dalek
Well this was the BEST Christmas special we've had to far. I sat there in total awe all the way through. maybe its because i know we won't get much Who next year, whatever, i really enjoyed it. You do get to see all ten Doctors which i think is sooooooo important for new Who fans and Classic fans, it brings everyone together nicely. David Morrisey was brilliant, the man is a excellent actor. Tennant as usual cannot put a foot wrong n his portrayal of our favorite time lord. The story is a mixture of Temple of Doom and Oliver Twist and the lead bad lady (Dervla Kirwan as Miss Hartigan) was top notch. I'm a bit iffy about the new Cybermen, they have not a patch on the 60's version but still it was good to see them.
All in all an great episode and i look forward to talking about it more when you get to see it. One thing, the next episode is called Planet of the Dead ( To quote RTD "We know that, for his first 2009 adventure, the Doctor will be left without the TARDIS and that "dark forces are gathering. The Gate is waiting, and life will never be the same again." )
I can hardly wait.
That was very good. I agree with Meds, it was better than previous specials.
The story behind the 'Next Doctor' of the title certainly wasn't one I saw coming but worked very well and was better than anything I'd thought of in advance! I too liked all the Doctors appearing though de the history of this set of Cybermen I'm not sure how they can justify doing it in the way they did.
Overall, well worth watching and a highlight of Christmas day.dd
I saw it and fell asleep during part of it. I liked it, but I liked the 07 one better.
I liked it. It was good fun. Not the best of stories from the good Doctor (My favorite is still 'The Girl in the Fireplace'). But it was at least fun.
Can't wait to watch.. downloading now.

From OPG.
Unofficial overnight figures show The Next Doctor was watched by 11.7 million viewers, a share of 50.5 per cent of the audience.
The rating is the highest achieved by the programme in 2008 and the second highest since the programme returned in 2005, only being beaten by last year's Christmas special.
The programme was the second-highest rated of Christmas Day and of Christmas week so far, beating EastEnders, even though the soap was shown in a much later slot. The highest-rated programme of the day was Wallace and Gromit: A Matter of Loaf and Death with a massive 14.3 million watching.
On BBC3 Doctor Who Confidential had an audience of 0.46 million and Doctor Who: Top 5 Christmas Moments was watched by 0.48 million viewers. Gavin and Stacey: 12 Days of Christmas was the highest- rated programme on multi-channel television.

I'm curious what type of media file an XBOX will accept? Will most work? Avi, mov, mpg,...? TIVO can accept pretty much anything - even .mkv files.
That's a tricky one. It accepts more files from a portable HD than it does from a stream from your comp. Let me get the list....

Just got done watching the 2008 Christmas Special.. it was good, I don't know if I would say it was the best of the Xmas specials but it was as enjoyable and fun as the others. It was just good to see a new Doctor Who. I liked the story and the tribute to the other Doctors. I wish they would do something other then the cybermen and daleks for the bad guys. But it had some cool effects and overall it was a fun ride.
I liked it quite a bit. The other Doctor/actor was great I thought. Loved the opening few minutes especially. It had been so long since I'd seen some new "Who" this was a welcome treat. For some reason I kept thinking the lead evil woman that leads the Cybermen was the wife of the other Doctor. They seemed to look alike but I guess that wasn't so. I thought it might have been a good twist. Anyway, very much enjoyed the special episode. :dalek
Some good reponses so far. I thought last years Xmas special was not good at all. It was sold on the fact that Kylie Minogue was in it and that her name was an anagram of Tardis. Hmmm. Plus it was just the Poiseidon Adventure. The previous ones were carbon copies of each other (robot santa's woah!!!!) So this years event i thought topped them all. It was a good old style episode (prob why i liked it so much) I agree with kenny Cybermen and Daleks are getting a bit thin, plus as also mentioned by Feathers these Cybermen are new Cybermen not the original classic ones from Mondas who have encountered 8 of the Dr's. The new ones would have no idea who the other 8 Dr's would be. Anyway thats nit picking.
Don't the Cybermen transfer knowledge down and around - kind of like the Borg?
I finally got the chance to watch the Christmas special last night, and I thought it was fantastic. Definitely an improvement over the script from last year's Voyage of the Damned. David Tennant once again brought an amazing performance, but David Morrisey as the Next Doctor was up at his level for sure. They both had great moments together and neither one tried to outshine the other. I also enjoyed Dervla Kirwan as Miss Hartigan, although her character was a bit underdeveloped in my humble opinion. The special effects were great throughout, as were the costumes, sets, just everything within the episode. For me, I think it's become my favorite Christmas special, although I'm not sure if I can consider it the best of them all--The Christmas Invasion was a pretty good one. I'm just a little sad that the next special won't be appearing for a while. *single tear*
Oh, and to show off my girly side, I want Miss Haritgan's red dress. Period. That thing was gorgeous. I think that's what I want for next Christmas. :love
Yes but only in one race, You see the Cybermen originally come from a planet called Mondas, they fought with all the Doctors ( from 1 to 8 ). But in the new series these Cybermen ( with the C on the chests) the Cybus Cybermen originated in another universe, where they were created by John Lumic, the owner of Cybus Industries and they have only met the 10th Doctor. Now if they had device that somehow obtained information from The 10th Doctor then i could understand that but that has not happened (so far).
KC Great review, i too thought that Hartigan was under used and why oh why could we have not use her again.

Why thank you Rico, thats the best praise a geek can ask for.
I really liked this episode, better then the last two Christmas Specials, I might say right now that it was better then the 2005 as well, but I think I'd want to rewatch that first before make that kind of decision. But I did really enjoy the Cybermen in this episode and the story of who the Next Doctor was, I really loved that character as well as and where he ended up. I liked the ending as well how in the past episodes since the Christmas Invasion we just see the Doctor run off at the end, but not this time. I love David Tennant playing the Doctor, I'll be sad to see him go, but The Next Doctor gets my "I loved this episode" description.
NEW DOCTOR IS....................................
BBC News has announced that the identity of the actor who will play with Eleventh Doctor, succeeding current Doctor David Tennant, will be announced tomorrow.
The news will come in a special edition of tie-in documentary series Doctor Who Confidential, which is being transmitted on BBC One tomorrow evening at 5.35pm. The episode will also be shown at the same time on BBC Big Screens in town centres across the UK.
The actor was confirmed in the role over the Christmas period, and will begin filming for series five this summer, for transmission in 2010. New executive producer Piers Wenger is quoted as saying: "We believe the actor is going to bring something very special to the role and will make it absolutely their own. I just can't wait to tell everyone who it is - it has been a nail-biting Christmas trying to keep this under wraps!"
The release from the BBC Press Office confirms that the Confidential episode has been retitled "The Eleventh Doctor" (it was formerly advertised as "The Ten Doctors"), and will feature the actor concerned giving his or her thoughts on having been cast. The press release also suggests that the last of David Tennant's episodes as the Doctor will be broadcast in the New Year of 2010.
So what's your guess Meds??
That confirms what I'll be watching tomorrow evening! I'd seen it in the schedule anyway but will definately tine in now.
Well my money is on Richard Coyle, who was in Steven Moffat's TV show coupling.
The way that they are avoiding gender specific pronouns, I'm inclined to give some weight to the idea that the new doctor might be female.

Yeah the three specials are to be filmed in Feb and March (depending on Tennants back op). So the new specials should be out July, August with filming of the new series in the summer. I should point out i am totally against a female Doctor. The Doctor is male, end of. There are female Time Lords who have been in the series so i think its doubtfull. Moffatt is behind this and he is a old school fan so i would be shocked to be told its a woman. I would like to see Romana or The Rani come back (Female Time Lords) for future episodes.

Also we do have a female timelord... we have the Doctor's daughter.

I thought they shot some of them last year.. they normally shot six months in advance.
No, the story I heard is that shooting is dependent on health. I don't think there's anything in the can at his point.
FWIW the Doctor is male. I guess I'm too old school to take on a different view. As Meds says, Time Lords have always had a specific gender. Changing that now would be a step too far. I'd still watch but it wouldn't be the same show.

Do you feel that same way about the Doctor always being white.. can we have another race Doctor or is that out of the question?
OK, I've thought about that a bit and have to say that for whatever reason I don't have the same objections. I feel he's a male character but skin tone doesn't worry me. More than that, I could probably come up with a couple of Black/Asian actors I could see in the role. I think I'd still like to see a Brit in the part though.
It's almost a surprise really since that wasn't a question I'd considered before.
I've really only been into Doctor Who since it had it's restart. But I also have to say the idea of a woman Doctor seems odd to me. This isn't like a new Trek series and a new Captain to cast, there are reasons the Doctor is male. He regenerates which alters his appearance somewhat but he's still the Doctor. I guess another factor for me would be if they did the female thing it would seem kind of like a gimmick to me. As far as race, color - that doesn't matter to me.
I'm more than happy for the actor to have a different skin tone. I'dbe very happy if Paterson Joseph takes the role, he was great in Survivors (even though i didn't like the remake) and he was great in Spooks. Also if you look at the below table the second actor tipped Chiwetel Ejiofor is also black, so could be on. Also with your new president to be it would be favourable (marketing point here) for the new Doctor to match a new black president.
Here are the betting odds at the moment.
ODDS FROM BETFAIR, MIDDAY 4TH JANUARY
Patterson Joseph - 31/10
Chiwetel Ejiofor - 22/5
James Nesbitt - 37/5
David Morrisey - 20/1
Billie Piper - 21/1
Aidan Gillen, Sean Pertwee - 24/1
Jack Davenport - 25/1
Ben Wishaw, Rhys Ifans, Robert Carlyle - 29/1
Colin Salmon - 43/1
Russell Tovey - 47/1
Alan Davies, Jennifer Saunders - 49/1
Richard E Grant - 54/1
John Simm - 59/1
Catherine Tate - 64/1
Richard Coyle - 79/1
Paul McGann, Jason Statham, Rowan Atkinson, Daniel Radcliffe, Stephen Fry - 99/1
I think we can take out the following.
Paul Mcgann, Jason Statham, Rowan Atkinson, Dan Radcliffe, Catherine Tate, Billie Piper, Sean Pertwee, John Simm and David Morrissey.
Oh I'm so excited, I'm going to be checking Google News constantly for any updates from the BBC. :)

New Doctor Is........................ Matt Smith
Dang, he's young! That aside, I'm very excited to see what he's going to do with the character.
The most texts i've had so far, is " he's got good hair"
26-year-old actor Matt Smith has been cast as the Eleventh Doctor, as revealed in today's special broadcast of Doctor Who Confidential on BBC One. Smith will succeed David Tennant in the role for the fifth series, which begins filming this summer and will air in 2010.
Smith has appeared in various television productions, including alongside Billie Piper in the BBC's adaptations of the Philip Pullman novels The Ruby in the Smoke and The Shadow in the North. He co-starred in the drama series Party Animals, and on stage was in Alan Bennett's acclaimed play The History Boys.
Smith was born and bred in Northampton, England, and later attended the University of East Anglia in Norwich. He is the youngest actor ever to have been cast as the Doctor in the TV series.
BBC News quotes Smith as saying: "I've got this wonderful journey in front of me where I've got this six months to build this Time Lord - and that's such an exciting prospect." Executive producer Piers Wenger has said that: "It was abundantly clear that he had that 'Doctor-ness' about him. You are either the Doctor or you are not."
The BBC Press Office, meanwhile, has a full release with quotes from new chief writer Steven Moffat, who was one of those behind Smith's casting. "The Doctor is a very special part, and it takes a very special actor to play him. You need to be old and young at the same time, a boffin and an action hero, a cheeky schoolboy and the wise old man of the universe. As soon as Matt walked through the door, and blew us away with a bold and brand new take on the Time Lord, we knew we had our man."

I guess that must be a job requirement now. :P
For some reason he reminds me of Neil Patrick Harris. It must be the forehead...
He reminds me of Willy Hartcourt-Cooze (on the left ) a chocolate maker here in England and on TV.
Hmmm - not sure about this guy but I'll reserve judgment until I see him act in the part. He looks way too pretty to me. And that hair - uggh!
I can't say much about him since I didn't like the look of Tennet when he took over.. like Rico said.. I'll wait and see how he is as Doctor and then love him. :)
He just doesn't look, how should I say it - "worldly" enough. The Doctor has had such a vast amount of experience both good and bad and David does such an amazing job conveying that. I'd frankly hate to be the one to step into his shoes. But, I know I'll be watching to see how the new guy does. :dalek
I don't necessarily like the way they parted his hair for the promo pics with the TARDIS, but they may still be figuring out a look for Mr. Smith's Doctor. Heck, they sure have enough time since the next series won't air until 2010, those cheeky execs. :P
Despite his youthful looks (and his Neil Patrick Harris forehead), it is definitely going to be interesting to see what his next take on the Doctor will be. Of course, one of the main reasons I'll be watching is to see what Mr. Moffat has up his sleeves in the next year or so. That's my main interest right there. :dalek
That captures it for me. Moffat will make it interesting come what may.
Actually, there was something about him in the interview that suggests he might be able to carry it off. I'm not sure what it was but despite his age it seems just possible this could work.
I'd like another season or two out of Tennant but I'm looking forward to 2010.
I think when you compare him to all the other doctors that have come before, he makes a good addition.
A little interview with him:

Dear Matt Smith,
I'm extremely jealous of your knowledge of the two scripts for the upcoming series. That is all.
Sincerely,
KC
(Why is 2010 so far away?)
He looks kind of young to me. We'll have to see him in action in 2010.
My wife just said he looks like the child of Quinton Tarentino and a really good hair dresser
The Daily Telegraph - never slow to run a Doctor Who-related story with the least excuse! - report today that the BBC and the production team have now stepped up the search for an actress to play the companion figure in the 2010 series.
The paper quotes executive producer Piers Wenger, saying that "Someone terribly exciting like Billie Piper, who was at the beginning of her acting career but who had a profile for other reasons, would be great. We are looking for someone whose light can burn brightly." The Telegraph suggests that this could mean performers such as singers Lily Allen (right) and Rachel Stevens or television presenter and actress Kelly Brook could be under consideration. The paper claims that Allen is "a favourite with bosses at the BBC," while Wenger says that "We would never cast anyone on the basis of their celebrity, but if Lily wanted to audition we would be delighted. It would be a lot of fun."
Wenger is also quoted on the subject of the much-touted casting of a black actor as the Doctor not having happened. "We saw a dozen or so people, some of them black. There was never any resistance to the idea of a black Doctor and it would have got us all sorts of headlines and brownie points, but we set out to cast the best actor for the role irrespective of ethnicity or age, and that was Matt."
Maybe the Doctor is really Benjamin Button?! He's aging backwards with each regen! :roflmao
LOL
Frightening but possibly true!
Now that we know who the next Doctor is.. it's time for rumors about his companion.
Who Will Be the Next "Doctor Who" Companion?
January 5, 2009 by Michael Hickerson || Category: TV
Now that we know who the next Doctor will be, the speculation can begin on who will play the next companion to the time traveling Time Lord.
According to NME, the BBC is considering British singer Lily Allen as the new companion for Matt Smith's eleventh Doctor.
Executive producer of the show, Piers Wenger, told the Daily Telegraph: "Having got the casting of the Doctor out of the way, the companion role is where we will be looking next. Someone terribly exciting like Billie Piper, who was at the beginning of her acting career but who had a profile for other reasons, would be great. We are looking for someone whose light can burn brightly."
While it hasn't been confirmed that Allen will be the new companion, Wenger said she'd certainly get consideration if she auditioned.
Also rumored to be in the running are Kelly Brook and Rachel Stevens.
Of course, all of these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the links Kenny. I can name all but 2. And its annoying me.
I can name all but the two in the upper right hand corner. Surely he could have squeezed in Sgt. Benson next to the Brigadier.
On the first picture, thats Perri and Ace, Perri was the companion of the 5th and 6th Doctor, Ace was with the 7th.

ha ha ha ha haha, oh hold on you're serious. Did you like Adric? When i was younger i did like him as he was just a bit older than me, but now i'm older he just annoys me. Great episode when he died though.
I know th aliens on the right picture but its the two at teh bottom i cant place. I could look them up but i'm working the brain for a change ha ha
Top right are my favourite bad guys of all time. I can't remember who they are but I loved them when they aired for the first time. Very frightening!

Yeah but you forget who is editing that podcast.. :) I can make you say anything.
Darn it ha ha ha
If Donna grew on me I'd cut her off! But actually, I agree that she was a lot better than I expected. Maybe not one of the best but certainly a companion I could have continued to watch.
I liked Donna as a companion. :( However, I did not like Martha. I know that's odd, but I have my reasons.
This is going to be a really interesting podcast... ;)
I rank DOnna up there because of the humor. I like Rose and Martha as well as others I have seen in some of the older shows but Donna really cracked me up.
I'm not going to comment any further on my feelings towards Donna, you'll have to wait and see, or if you are of the investigatory kind, check out the past Dr Who posts, you'll see mine, they are all angry ;)
I really didn't care for Donna. I liked Martha Jones better.
I'll say this about Donna. My wife has said and I quote "Screw Doctor Who! After what happened to Donna, I'll never watch another episode."
Granted she's still quite upset that Adric died and I had to beg her to watch the new series despite that grudge.
I sincerely think there needs to be a sociological study of Doctor Who fans, because unlike other fandoms where all characters are generally liked, we're all across the board. :D
And don't worry Meds, I know where you're coming from when it comes to your dislike of Donna. I have a friend who has similar angry feelings about Xander from "Buffy."
How can anyone be upset that Adric died?
None too soon I said (at the time). I never liked him (for reasons I can't explain).
I found it very disturbing when Donna's mind got wiped and she became the same idiot as in 'the runaway bride'. I almost wish they would of killed her off instead. She finally was becoming a strong character (well...too strong in the last episode, but I won't go there) and then she just lost everything. Lossing everything without knowing you lost it is a very disturbing thought for me.
And I really wanted to see a tear in the Doctor's eye in that last scene. Knowing that he 'lost' another companion has to be tearing him up inside.
Well it was for her own good so in essence he has saved her but condemn her to her old life. But there will be an essence of the Doctor inside here so she will be different. Plus her family, well her mother was the biggest problem in her life, they will act different towards her now so her life is already better than it was in the Runaway *shiver* Bride.
I'm curious to see if they bring back Donna's grandad, Wilf (Bernard Cribbins) into any future episodes. I always enjoyed his character. He would make a good companion for the Doctor.
Was Bernard Cribbins in the 2008 xmas episode again? We are still waiting for it to air here in the States. Anyone know the airdate for the 2008 xmas episode in the U.S.?
No, no Wilf in this years episode since it was set in Victorian times rather than the present day.
Wilf would make a great companion, plus a nod to Bernards role in the Dr Who movie back in the 60's.
Oh yes, I can just imagine that. I can even see it working without me thinking of Wombles every time I bear him.

Some info on the first Special.
Executive Producer and Head Writer Russell T. Davies reveals that the forthcoming Doctor Who special Planet Of The Dead will serve as an "antidote" to recent adventures.
The departing showrunner told Doctor Who Magazine: "After the events of Journey's End and The Next Doctor I think it's time to get away from the past and have an adventure with lots of new elements. And lots of fun too!
"The next Special should be a nice antidote to Christmas, with a bit of sunshine if we're lucky. And with not one but two alien races that you've never seen before."
Sounds cool.. can't wait to see it.
I like how a little bit of "sunshine" is expected out of an episode entitled "Planet of the Dead." ;)
Rumor: Ryan Could Be New "Who" Companion
January 20, 2009 by Michael Hickerson || Category: TV
Former "Bionic Woman" actress Michelle Ryan is reportedly in conversations with the BBC to assume the role of the new companion on "Doctor Who" according to the UK's Daily Mirror.
The Mirror reports Ryan has been "in secret talks with BBC bosses" about joining Matt Smith in the TARDIS for the fifth series, which will debut in 2010.
"The BBC launched Michelle's acting career as Zoe Slater in 'EastEnders' and she will be thrilled to be back with them in such a legendary role," said a undisclosed source. "It's an incredible opportunity for her and even though she's had a lot of success already she is still young and at the start of her career."
American audiences will know Ryan from her role as Jamie Summers in last year's "Bionic Woman" reboot. She has worked with new "Who" producer, Steven Moffat on "Jekyll."
Lily Allen, 23, Kelly Brook, 29, and 23-year-old Carey Mulligan - who played Sally Sparrow in the third season's "Blink" - have all recently been linked to the coveted assistant's role.
The BBC is reported to be close to announcing the final casting news soon. However, until we have something official, this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt...
http://www.sliceofscifi.com/2009/01/20/rumor-ryan-could-be-new-who-companion/ (http://www.sliceofscifi.com/2009/01/20/rumor-ryan-could-be-new-who-companion/)
Interesting. The concept of an EastEnders Slater in the TARDIS is alarming to say the least!
Of course, I've never seen the bionic woman so don't know how she carried that. She may be an excellent actress despite the Soap history.
She was pretty good i thought in the bionic woman, but she was over shadowed by Rico's TV screen love ;)
I think she would make a good addition to the show. I was quite impressed with her on Bionic Woman.
Lee Evans cast in special From OPG
It looks like actor and comedian Lee Evans has been cast as "a Professor" in one of the forthcoming special episodes of Doctor Who, four of which will be broadcast during 2009 and into New Year 2010. Evans confirmed his casting during this afternoon's studio recording of tomorrow's edition of BBC One chat show Friday Night with Jonathan Ross, saying that he had been approached a few days beforehand and was delighted to be working on the series.
Evans has worked as both a stand-up comic and an actor, appearing in several Hollywood movies. His films include MouseHunt, There's Something About Mary and The Fifth Element. On stage, he appeared in the 2004-05 London run of The Producers, as Leo Bloom.
Hmmm. Not sure what I feel about this. I haven't seen his movie rolls but I'm always dubious about his ability to carry off a serious role for an extended period.
I guess a single episode would be OK.
I've seen him do serious and he does it very well. I saw him in a dark televised play last year and i was shocked at how good he was. I think it's a good move.
Congrats! One day I might get there.

yeah I don't think you posted this in the right thread... :)
This is what I get for having 20+ tabs open!
I think the only thing I've seen Lee Evans in is Mouse Hunt with Nathan Lane. I'm looking forward to his appearance, though. :)
Doctor Who role for ex-EastEnder
Former EastEnders star Michelle Ryan and comedian Lee Evans will guest star in Doctor Who's Easter special, the BBC has confirmed.
Ryan will play the mysterious Lady Christina de Souza in the special episode, entitled Planet of the Dead.
"I'm a huge fan of Doctor Who and very excited to be joining David Tennant and the Doctor Who team," she said.
Evans plays a character called Malcolm, whose life becomes connected to the Doctor's in unusual circumstances.
Planet of the Dead is the first of four Doctor Who specials, marking the end of David Tennant's tenure as the Time Lord.
'Can't wait'
Ryan is best known for playing Zoe Slater in the BBC One soap and starring in the American remake of Bionic Woman.
Recently, there has been speculation that she could be cast as the Doctor's new assistant, when Tennant's replacement, Matt Smith, takes on the role next year.
It is not known whether this appearance rules her out of that role - Catherine Tate's character Donna Noble first appeared in a Doctor Who Christmas special 15 months before she returned as the Doctor's assistant.
Ryan said: "It is such a fantastic show and I can't wait to get started."
Executive producer and writer Russell T Davies said: "Michelle is one of the most sought-after young actors in the country and we are delighted to announce that she will be joining the team.
"As always the script is being kept strictly under wraps. However, we can reveal that Lady Christina is a woman with a mysterious past who's going to have a huge impact on the Doctor."
Filming on the episode has already begun in Wales.
Here is a couple of pics of Michelle Ryand and the good Doctor.
I think David Tennant wins the Most Expressive Face Award in those pictures.
It's going to be great seeing Michelle with the Doctor. Now they just need to get Katee on the series and my life will be complete!
A man with simple pleasures!
Any idea why the shots seem to be taken in the back of a bus somewhere?
I've decided I'm reserving judgement on any particular actor now, until I see them in the role. I've been wrong before so I'm going to try and give up passing judgement in advance in future.
Roll on the specials!
It's most likely the catering bus knowing the BBC.

By the way, I just found a clip of David Tennant's video diary from a week or two ago that films a little bit of the readthrough they had for Planet of the Dead. I'm a little sad that we don't get to hear bits of the script--spoilers, schmoilers--but it's nice to see a short behind the scenes video of what's happening with the first 2009 special.

'Doctor Who' To Meet New Bad Guys
By MICHAEL HINMAN
Jan-30-2009
The Daleks? Check. The Cybermen? Check.
The Tritovore ... who?
That's a question BBC hopes fans won't be asking come Easter when the next "Doctor Who" special is set to air with David Tennant and special guest companion Michelle Ryan.
The Tritovore are a new bad guy described by The Mirror as part man, part fly.
"They are disgusting and will last long in the memory," a source told the newspaper. "Everyone remembers the Daleks and the Cyberman, but not a lot else if their honest. The Tritovore will change that."
The Tritovore will be a part of an episode already billed "Planet of the Dead," and will bring Ryan -- best known to American audiences as the star of the short-lived NBC series "Bionic Woman" -- back to the small screen. It also will begin what will be the final stretch of episodes for Tennant, who announced late last year he would be leaving "Doctor Who," to be replaced by Matt Smith.
Little else is known about the episode, except from a publicity still that shows Tennant and Ryan in what appears to be the back of an older style bus.
Talk continues to swirl that either Ryan is the new full-time companion for when the fifth season begins in 2010, or that the specials slated to appear throughout 2009 are sort of an audition for full-time companions.
The inclusion of the Tritovore has not been confirmed by BBC, so it should be treated as any rumor would.
I know the Martha Jones info was posted.. but there's a bit more new in this article.
Freema Agyeman Finds Way Back To 'Doctor Who'
Michael Hinman
Jan-27-2009
Talk continues to swirl over whether Michelle Ryan will be the new full-time companion when "Doctor Who" returns to normal seasons in 2010, but for now, an old companion is slated to return.
Freema Agyeman, who played Martha Jones in the third season of "Doctor Who," is nearing a deal to where she will return at least for the final episode featuring David Tennant in the title role, according to the British tabloid The Sun.
"Freema's on board," a source told the newspaper. "It's early days, so it's unclear what exactly Martha will be up to in the new show."
The return does come as a bit of a surprise. Agyeman was slated to make the move full-time over to the "Doctor Who" spinoff "Torchwood" after a trial run in that show's second season, but at the last minute opted to take on a regular role in "Law & Order: U.K." instead. That move was said to have angered some of the management over in the "Doctor Who" camp, most especially outgoing showrunner Russell T. Davies, who had already plotted Martha's return to full-time status on "Torchwood," and even teased such a pairing in the fourth season finale of "Doctor Who."
Whatever rift was there, apparently it's gone, and Agyeman will make at least one guest appearance as a way to say farewell to Tennant.
Tennant, of course, is being replaced by Matt Smith when the show returns for its fifth season in 2010, but it seems he wasn't the first choice of the producers.
Martin Clunes, the 47-year-old actor who American audiences would probably best remember as Gary Strang in the 1990s series "Men Behaving Badly," was apparently the man incoming showrunner Steven Moffat had in mind to take over the sonic screwdriver.
"Producers wanted Martin to take over Tennant's job full-time and were desperate to see him in the Christmas episode," sources told the tabloid. "They saw it as a trial for the main job, but they found the whole casting process very frustrating. Talent comes at a price and the show could simply not afford Martin."
"Doctor Who" returns with an Easter special this spring on BBC.
Doctor Who in HD!
Set rebuilds on the way as the doc goes hi-def at last...
Doctor Who is the latest show to join the "High~Definition" television revolution with filming currently taking place using the format, reports Doctor Who Magazine.
Planet of the Dead has already started filming in HD and the rest of the specials will continue to use the format. There is no word on whether or not Series 5 will be shot this way.
Danielle Nagler, Head of BBC HD, describes this change as "a more intense viewing experience" whilst Julie Gardner comments that this has been planned since the show's return in 2005.

Some cool posts here. I'm excited about Michelle She's going to rock. As for the whole freema thing, tv is tv. I think Kenny will agree that acting jobs are hard to come by and if she wanted to try something new RTD would undertand that. I like the idea of clunes as the Doctor plus he has already been in a Doctor Who episode back in the early 80,s with the 5th doctor.
First special is to be televised in the UK around Easter time. Michelle Ryan will be playing Lady Christina De Souza a woman with a very mysterious past. Hmmm. Sounds cool.
The Daily Record newspaper is reporting that actress Lindsay Duncan has been cast as the Doctor's companion, named in the report as Adelaide, in the second of the forthcoming special episodes which will see out David Tennant's tenure as the Tenth Doctor.
Duncan is well known for her roles in high-profile television dramas such as GBH and Rome. She is also appearing as Margaret Thatcher in next week's much-publicised BBC Two drama Margaret, concerning the former Prime Minister's final days in power.
The paper quotes Duncan as saying: "I'm thrilled to be involved in Doctor Who. I've never done anything like this before and I'm really looking forward to working with David Tennant and the Doctor Who team."
The special's co-writer and executive producer Russell T Davies is also quoted, saying: "Lindsay is an incredibly talented actress and I've been an admirer of her work for some time. We are delighted to announce that she will be joining the team and playing the Doctor's most strong-minded companion yet."

Smith Will Have New TARDIS Interior
March 4, 2009 by Michael Hickerson || Category: TV
Maybe this is the TARDIS re-design some fans were talking about on our Voice Mail show a few weeks ago.
The TARDIS will get a new interior design with Matt Smith takes over at the 11th Doctor next year according to the Daily Mirror. The BBC recently signed off on a new design for the interior of the Doctor's time-machine.
The production team will also improve the quality of the police box exterior for the opening episode of Smith's tenure.
Production sources say the decision is being taken by new Doctor Who writer and executive producer Stephen Moffat, who wants to distance himself from previous show chief Russell T Davies.
He wants the arrival of Matt Smith to signify a new era, and also to withstand Doctor Who being in high definition. A source said: "It will be the most hitech, intricate TARDIS ever."
Oooooooo this is good news. I don't see the need to alter the exterior of the Tardis as there is not much you can do with it, bar make it bigger/ taller/thinner etc (don't get me started on all the different size's used in the series because you know I'll be here for ever). The interior well I was never really a fan of the new interior, as the 5th doctor said "you've changed the desk top theme again". We'll still have the central column but I'd like to see a minimalistic approach.

I think it's all about production. Remember when DS9 was built how it was said that the set was built to be shot on a movie screen. When you are using normal tv resolution, you can get away with a few things that HD and movies won't allow. I'm betting that they change the ply-wood blue box for a solid wood blue box. It would give the piece strength and the wood wood patterns that Ply-wood and duct tape don't allow.
Ah duct tape, reminds me of the Pertwee era ha ha.
I'm thinking the TARDIS will get the new Star Trek treatment. I wouldn't mind a mix of the classic TARDIS look (clean and white) with lots of consoles and screens.
Some interiors.
New 'Doctor Who' Finds Its Companion
PLUS: Rumors circulate that only two specials will appear this year
By MICHAEL HINMAN
Mar-09-2009
Source: Dark Horizons
It seems that a decision has been made.
Rumors are circulation, via The News of the World that Hannah Murray will accompany Matt Smith's The Doctor when new guard take over the Tardis in "Doctor Who" next year.
Murray, who has had very limited screen time in her young years outside of her role in the British television series "Skins," is apparently the choice of Steven Moffat to join Smith when the series begins producing regular episodes again in 2010.
The rumor hasn't been confirmed by BBC, but if it's true, Murray will join a long list of companions, that in the modern era included Billie Piper, Freema Agyeman and Catherine Tate.
Tate's Donna Noble first appeared in the second Christmas special of the new series, and returned in the fourth season in a critic's favorite storyline that resulted in the character's "death."
Accompanying the companion reports is a story from Dark Horizons that BBC is planning just two specials in 2009, and not three as originally planned. That will include Easter's "Planet of the Dead" starring David Tennant and Michelle Ryan, and this year's Christmas special, which features Tennant and Lindsay Duncan, and marks the return of the Ood.
The third special has been pushed to early 2010, possibly as early as New Year's Day, and will be the final episode for Tennant, who will leave the series before the fifth season starts in 2010. The episode will take place on Mars, and will feature Peter O'Brien as the villain, according to reports.
Much of this hasn't been confirmed by BBC, so until that happens, it should be treated as any rumor would.
New K9 show.
Here's a promo image. I don't feel the need to say what my feelings are about this. But i think you will have guessed.

SPOILER (If its true)
Some info from The Sun, this is not confirmed.
David Tennant will appear in four more special episodes of Doctor Who. One will air around Easter, and the other three will air around Christmas 2009 and New Year's 2010. The last two specials form a two-part story; this is the story which the Sun's news concerns.
The Sun is reporting that in David Tennant's final story as the Doctor, he will be accompanied by Billie Piper as Rose, Freema Agyeman as Martha and Catherine Tate as Donna. According to the tabloid, the three companions will face off against John Simm, returning as the Master.

I hope this isn't true.. as much as I love Rose, her story is over and the same with Donna she had a tragic ending to her story but I don't want it ruined by bringing her back. I don't mind if Martha is back.. never really resolved her story. As for bringing back The Master but it should be another actor as John Simm was burned to ashes.
I guess they could time it for before the last Master story but somehow I doubt it.
OK, I mean that there's not a chance that they'll do that!
I'm with Kenny. The thing is. The new Doctor needs a new companion. Now when Tennant turned up the first person he was with was Rose and so adopted the slight london accent. The same with eccleston (rumour that the last companion with the 8th doctor was from Manchester so when he regenerated into the 9th he adopted her accent). So for Matt Smith to come in he needs to bond with the companion he's with when he regenerates (that's why The 10th doctor was close with Rose and the reason why the 9th wasnt) he'll have that closeness after the change. Donna would be a nightmare but Martha would be good. Really though i'd love to see a new companion join the Doctor for the last episode and bang new Doctor.
Possible spoiler.
I read something the other day that said something about "The Planet of The Spiders" being the last Tennant story.

That can't be right Scott. There is already a episode of Doctor Who called Planet of the Spiders. Its a Jone Pertwee ( 3rd Doctor) story

Oh "Planet of the Spiders" spooked me for a long time when it was first on.
Yes, I am that old.
Been really getting in 'Who' lately and I'm half way through season 2 of new series.
Being me I need more background info on the Doctor etc and I'm looking for some good online reference sites that I can scan for information.
Can any of you experts recommend any to me?

Heh guess what I won't be watching that looks horrible Just by the actors in the background they look like this is their first show ever.
A nice clip from the past here. The Tardis as art. As talked about by a certain Mr Cleese.

Doctor Who: John Simm Returns :spidey
As the days count down to Tennant's farewell, more faces return - some friendly, some not...
Published on Apr 3, 2009
After Bernard Cribbins was spotted on set filming the last of the Doctor Who specials earlier this week, today saw the return of another familiar face, John Simm.
The actor, who played The Master in three episodes of Series 3 of the hit sci~fi show, was seen sporting a newly dyed blonde hairstyle on the grounds of Tredegar House. With Cribbins and Simm now in the bag, all eyes turn to next week when filming returns to Donna Noble's home and a possible appearance from Catherine Tate. She and David Tennant are presenting a BBC Radio 2 show on Saturday 11th from 10am until 1pm.
The last of the specials are due to be broadcast over the Christmas period with the finale, featuring Tennant's regeneration into Matt Smith, airing on New Year's Day. Russell T Davies recently revealed that the second of this year's specials will be broadcast before this period, shortening the gap for Who fans.
Planet of the Dead hits the small screen in the UK on Saturday 11th April on BBC One, 6.45pm with a simulcast on BBC HD.
It appears that the title for the next special will be announced at the end of The Planet of the Dead along with a small trailer. The second special is directed by the excellent Graeme Harper and features the Doctor plunged into a world of terror. It is expected to air in the autumn.
I will be watching / recording this in glorious HD quality now that I get BBC HD!! :cheers
I wonder how soon BBC America will get it?
No official US airtime from BBC America at this time.
Guess I'll have to get it the "old-fashioned way." ;)
And why not, I've been going through the various forums and everyone is betting on youtube having it up first (and then loosing it)

There was apparently some doubt about the airtime a week or so ago but it seems to have been resolved now:
Easter Special Time Unveiled.
Planet of the Dead to be broadcast at 6:45pm.
The broadcast time for the highly anticipated Easter Special has now been confirmed as 6:45pm Saturday, April 11 on BBC One. Planet Of The Dead is also being simulcast on the BBC HD channel - the BBC's High Definition channel is available through Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media.
The special will be repeated on Sunday, 12 Apr on BBC Three at 7:00pm with exclusive Red Button commentary from David Tennant, Julie Gardner and James Strong on Satellite and Cable services. A full Red Button commentary service will be available when the special is repeated later in the month.
Planet of the Dead will then be repeated again on BBC One on Easter Monday, 13 Apr at 5:00pm.
Don't forget you can also watch the full episode on this website straight after it's been on TV, where you can also watch exclusive behind the scenes videos and play the latest Doctor Who games.
Also, the Radio Times (UK TV Schedule magazine) has a gallery of episode and BTS preview images up.

I'm looking forward to Saturday :)
Doctor Who's David Tennant gets emotional about his coming departure
David Tennant, who is wrapping up his tenure as the 10th Doctor in Doctor Who, told the BBC that he got emotional while reading his final moments in the show.
The Scottish actor has six weeks left of filming, and with the first of four Doctor Who specials airing on BBC One on Easter Saturday, he'll soon hand over the TARDIS to Doctor number 11, Matt Smith, the BBC reported.
The Easter special, "Planet of the Dead," features Michelle Ryan (late of NBC's Bionic Woman) "in a catsuit stealing something important," Tennant told the BBC. "Then she tries to escape on a red bus, a London red bus. But London transport being what it is, it slips through a wormhole in time and space and ends up on a planet on the other side of the universe."
Tennant added: "There's a tiny little hint at the very end that it's all about to get a lot darker. Because obviously at the end of the year, it's the end of the line for the 10th doctor. This is kind of a romp. This is the last time the Doctor gets to have fun, in a way."
When Tennant read the scripts for his upcoming final episodes, he told the BBC: "I might have had a little cry. They were brilliant scripts and very moving. It was quite a big deal, really. I sort of turned the phone off and made sure I could read it straight through without too much interruption."
DOCTOR WHO PLANET OF THE DEAD.
Spoiler Free Review.
This was a fantastic episode, Michelle Ryan as Christina is fantastic and i tell you what she has the makings of an ideal companion. She is smart, sexy, witty and compliments The Doctor better than any new companion so far, and you know if i say that it must mean something. We get UNIT in this episode which is gives us the chance to see The Doctors new best friend the scientist Dr Malcom Taylor played excellently by Lee Evans.
There is some great special effects and stunning scenery, fantastic acting and there is a touch os sexyness going on. There is a sad touch at the end, and a very moving speech made by one of the passneges who levaes by saying the following words
"He will knock four times."
Next episode will be called
The Waters of Mars
I was able to watch the Easter episode and it was amazing. I adored Michelle Ryan, and her chemistry with Mr. Tennant was phenomenal.
I laughed so hard when the Doctor said he was going to be careful with the trophy Christina stole, and then hammered it to golden pulp. Classic. And I gotta say, I was tearing up a little when the psychic passenger said that the 10th Doctor's song was coming to an end. I have a feeling I'm going to be an emotional happy/sad wreck when the last special comes on. :'(
Oh, and Dr. Malcolm Taylor is my new best friend too. Lee Evans was great in this episode.
Just finished watching.. it was really good, interesting story, and I love
that everyone survived, well except the bus driver and the two fly aliens. I was expecting each person to get picked off one at a time like the Xmas special.. so that was fun and I really liked Michele Ryan as a companion. Very much The Doctors equal, too bad she's not sticking around. Loved the warning, he will knock four times.. I wonder who she is talking about .. the Master?? And the preview for The Waters of Mars special was super creepy.. can't wait.
Excellent episode.
I still have a few problems with the Lee Evans character, as I thought I would -
I'd have prefered to see him played straight rather than comedic
- but that's a minor point when looked at in the light of the whole.
Michelle Ryan was excellent and I'd love to see her come back, assuming she would work as well with Matt Smith as she does with David Tennant. The change in mood at the end was marked very well and bodes well for the promise of darkness to come.
I didn't like
the way in which the crystal container simply levitated the bus. There wasn't enough explanation/techno-babble there for me. Bearing in mind the audience it's aimed at, however, I can live with it.
Very good over all, nice to see UNIT in there usual form although the Doctor seems a little too revered for me.
Looking forward to the remaining three parts of Tennants tenure.
You know ... after watching this ...
I was starting to think that Ryan's character might be Romana. She seemed to take too easily to what was happening. I'm still thinking that she might be.
I like your thinking Chris but i doubt it's Her purely because of her enthusiasm for travelling with The Doctor. If we are to take the canon into account She was / is the president of Gallifrey . Still you never know. So what about the Knock four times.
Just watched this and really loved it.
I may have missed it being mentioned in the past, but I thought it was interesting about the Doctor saying he stole the TARDIS. Has that been touched on much with the new Doctor Who series? Interesting. I loved Michelle Ryan. She had more spunk and fun than she ever had as the bionic woman and worked well with Tennant. It's sad we won't probably get to see them together again. The Malcolm character seemed a bit overboard to me. But all in all I really enjoyed this one quite a bit. Makes me miss the series even more.
When you "go human" don't you lose all your memories and become entrenched in a new life?
From what I remember, they haven't touched on the theft o the TARDIS at all in the new series. It's one of those thing that was originally developed yerars ago and has then been dropped.
Cool of them to bring it up. I wonder if it was a throw away line, or something that they plan to play on on future specials?
When you "go human" you still have memories, faint ones but they are still there. I'd love to see her back. The Doctor stole the Tardis (mark 40 model) to escape Gallifrey. Though because it's so out of date it would be destroyed if he hadn't stole it. The Tardis is alive and so is the closest and longest running companion.
Finally watched this (even though I'm not yet caught up on previous shows!) and apart from a couple of niggles
Why would 'fly' aliens with no external ears have bluetooth-style commincation earpieces as part of their onboard kit?
I thought it was great.
Really looking forward to more specials.
Wow. Interesting question, I hadn't thought of your spoiler!
Erm...is the answer 'because they do?'
New extended trailer for Waters of Mars.
Doctor Who Waters of Mars Extended Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7lvGxjE9wk#ws-lq-lq2-hq-vhq)
Ooh. That bit on the end was more than we saw on saturday. Thanks for that.
I dont believe thats an official trailer. Think the last bit is made up. Good editing but the knock four times is not who you think it is. Or is it?
So the next special is called The Water Of Mars. Take a good look at those words then see if you come up with the same title as i do. It's an anagram of
War Of The Master
Now that's interesting.
Was it Water or Waters?
Interesting nontheless. Was the anagram all your own work?
I'll be honest no Mike. I heard it on the Who Cast. I'm not that good ha ha.
So it looks like Catherine Tate is going to be in the last episodes of DT's reign...WHY? Bernie Cribbins yes, great idea but why Tate. Look we all know my feelings towards her but she had a good last story, it was sad, it was moving and it made the point that she would die and the end of the world would (probably) happen if she saw the Doctor again so dont bring her back. For me its a weakness in RTD's writing that he feels the need to rely on old companions just to justify the story. BELT UP. You need a new companion in the last story, one the new Doctor can bounce off so lets get fresh.
How can they bring her back after all the careful work they did to close down her story?
I'm with Meds on this one.
One comment I forgot to make on the Easter special was on the item that really took me away from the story - the number 200 bus doesn't go to Victoria!
The 200 runs between Raynes Park and Colliers Wood (through the middle of Wimbledon) and it always has as far as I can remember. It's also a single deck service. Knowing that, for some reason it really knocked me out of the story for a moment when I saw the bus route they were using.
How hard would have been to research London bus routes and pick one that was appropriate for the area where the story started?
It's a small thing, I know :)

Well luckily for the Millions and Millions of other viewers we won't notice that the bus' route was incorrect.:)
Ah, but detail is everything in television ;)
(I should know, I'm an aircraft Systems Engineer whereas you...work in television. Hmmmm. Perhaps I'll keep quiet.)
In a poll conducted by the Total Sci-Fi Website to find the best sci-fi television theme tune of all time, the Doctor Who theme, originally composed by Ron Grainer and arranged by Delia Derbyshire at the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop in 1963, came top.
The groundbreaking theme was realized by combining a tape loop of a struck piano string with the sound of test oscillators and filters among a whole host of techniques.
Total Sci-Fi editor Matt McAllister comments: "The poll result proves that in addition to being one of the most popular science fiction shows ever created, Doctor Who also boasts the most iconic sci-fi theme tune. Grainer and Derbyshire's theme manages to convey the outlandish quality of the show and is instantly recognisable to fans throughout the world just by its opening bars."
Other themes in the top 10 include Star Trek, Red Dwarf, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the Thunderbirds. See Total Sci-Fi for the complete list.
And for those not familiar with the excellent original theme here it is.
Doctor Who - Original Theme Music Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LF2x5IKxmAQ#lq-lq2-hq)
And i still think it knocks the socks off the new version.
And here is a picture of the wonderfull Delia Derbyshire at work.
Very interesting!
I do love the Doctor Who theme tune. The new version is OK with the orchestral arrangement in it but they added some drums to it in later seasons which drowned it out a bit.
I don't mind modernising it a bit, I enjoy all the theme tunes (bar McGann version) and i grew up with the 5th Dr Theme but the new one looses the sci fi element i think. its funny I've just gone over to youtube and played all the versions and every one strikes a bit of memory from my past.
Gillian Anderson A "Who" Villain?

Gillian Anderson A "Who" Villain?
A British tabloid rumor about "Doctor Who" is about as reliable as one about James Bond from the same publication, yet on the rare occasion they've gotten things quite right.
Two years ago the tabloids reported that original UK "Life on Mars" and "State of Play" star John Simm was going to play The Doctor's old nemesis The Master at the end of the then upcoming third season, and that acclaimed actor Derek Jacobi would also play a key part. The rumor proved 100% correct.
Today, The Telegraph is reporting that former "The X-Files" star and now UK resident Gillian Anderson is being pursued to play a villain in an episode of the fifth season of the show airing in 2010. The so-called insider says the most likely role would be The Doctor's other Time Lord rival, The Rani.
Kate O'Mara previously played the exiled Time Lady who commits insidious experiments in the name of her research. Since 'Who' was revived in 2005 however, rumors of The Rani casting have proven fruitless in the past with the likes of "Footballers Wives" star Zoe Lucker being linked by the tabloids years ago.
Also unknown at present is if the most notable of the remaining 'Who-verse' alien races not yet introduced, such as the Ice Warriors or the Silurians/Sea Devils, will be included in the fifth season which sees a new Doctor (Matt Smith) and showrunner (Stephen Moffat). Filming on the fifth season kicks off in a few months.
Anderson is about to star alongside former Doctor Christopher Eccleston on stage in "A Doll's House".
Gillian Anderson as The Rani. That I like big time. :)
Claire Bloom to Guest Star on "Doctor Who"
April 30, 2009 by Michael Hickerson || Category: TV News
If the latest casting report for "Doctor Who" is true, the Stephen Moffat era cannot start soon enough.
According to the Daily Telegraph, actress Claire Bloom has been cast for the upcoming two-part holiday special as the mother of the Doctor.
"It is happening. They are filming at the moment. I have been organising her schedule," her manager in America, Marion Rosenberg, is reported to have told the Daily Mail.
Bloom, 78, who lives alone in Fulham, north London, rose to prominence after being chosen by Charlie Chaplin to appear in his film Limelight in 1952. She is said to be excited by her new role.
A friend of the actress told the newspaper: "The script is a very closely guarded secret, as the producers are desperate for Claire's appearance to be a surprise."
The Doctors mother? I think the House Of Lungbarrow will have something to say about that. Intresting.
Who knows, maybe she is gonna play a character that is the Doctors mother. Then she regenerates and then calls herself Professor Riversong. It could explain why Riversong knows the Doctors real name. I dunno. Maybe, it's just my imagination though.
Looks like ex James Bond actor Timothy Dalton will be in the final Tennant epsiodes.

Not sure I'd want to be anywhere alone with John Barrowman. I think he's as OTT in real life as on screen. I'd take the TARDIS set tour at the drop of a hat though!
YOU DONT HAVE TO WAIT TILL NOVEMBER TO SEE THE TENTH DOCTOR.
This was reported earlier.
The BBC Press Office has confirmed that David Tennant is to appear as the Tenth Doctor in the forthcoming third series of spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures, due to be shown on CBBC and BBC One this autumn. This will once again reunite the Doctor with former companion Sarah Jane Smith, played by Elisabeth Sladen.
The release also confirms that the series will again be twelve episodes long, and that it will feature an appearance from Doctor Who race the Judoon. Executive producer Russell T Davies is quoted of saying of Tennant's appearance in the programme: "Viewers thought they may have to wait until November for the next full episode of Doctor Who, but this is an extra special treat. And it's not just a cameo from David – this is a full-on appearance for The Doctor as he and Sarah Jane face their biggest threat ever."
Sladen is also quoted in the release, saying: "When I heard the news that David was going to be joining us I was absolutely over the moon. Not only has it made my day but it will also make the viewers' day."
For UK internet users, the Children's BBC website has made available a video interview with Davies where he discusses the Doctor's appearance in the series, which he says will take place across episodes five and six. The series is due to start broadcasting in September. BBC News also carries the video interview with Davies.
Great news for you American fans.
In a turnabout from a previous arrangement, BBC America now has first US broadcast rights for the soon-to-be-aired hour-long specials of Doctor Who, Variety reported today.
The Next Doctor, the show's 2008 Christmas episode, will make its US debut at 9:00 p.m. on June 27, followed by Planet of the Dead in July (date TBA). Specific US air dates will be determined for the subsequent specials after they've aired in the UK.
BBC America - which has to bid for British shows just like any other American broadcaster - will continue its first run deal on Torchwood, airing that show's third season in July.
Other science fiction shows debuting on the network this summer include Being Human (starting July 25) and Survivors, starring Doctor Who's Freema Agyeman (date TBA). The third season of ITV's dinosaur time romp Primeval is currently airing on the network.
Current BBC America president Garth Ancier says that's the network should always have had Doctor Who. "If I'd been here [when the original deal was made]," Ancier said, "we wouldn't have sold it, to be quite honest." For the last four years, the Sci Fi Channel has held first rights, with BBC America holding second rights.
That's great news! Thanks for the tip! :metallica:
Here's more Who news.. some of this has already been posted.
Various "Doctor Who" Updates
By Garth Franklin Thursday May 28th 2009 10:06AM
Various "Doctor Who" Updates
BBC America has taken back The Doctor from the Sci-Fi Channel, today announcing the acquisition of the five "Doctor Who" television specials starring David Tennant in his last adventures as The Doctor.
The deal includes last year's Christmas special "The Next Doctor" which will go to air States-side on June 27th at 9pm. That will be quickly followed by the first of the 2009 specials "Planet of the Dead" which aired this past Easter in the UK and will screen in the US in July. That same month the new five-episode season of spin-off "Torchwood" will also air on the network.
The remaining three specials air November and around Christmas in the UK. No word on the US airdates but they're expected to be much closer to the British airings and will likely air in full - unlike the Sci-Fi Channel broadcasts which notably edited out several minutes of content from key episodes.
'Planet of the Dead', the first "Doctor Who" adventure to be shot in high-definition, will get a Blu-ray release shortly after the US airing.
In other 'Who' news, The BBC has confirmed that Tennant will play 'The Doctor' in a two-part episode of the third season of spin-off series "The Sarah Jane Adventures".
Producer Russell T Davies says this isn't just a cameo either - "this is a full-on appearance" with his episodes going to air sometime in September in the UK.
The press release also confirmed that a script is in development for a 'Who' movie, but it's still early days and could well fall through as has happened before.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Onto the less substantiated, more rumor-oriented stuff. According to My Park Mag, Tennant has just finished shooting his final scenes as The Doctor last week and is "expected to die alone in the TARDIS" in the final special.
There's been rumor of Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) returning but many were wondering how in the world that will fit into continuity considering she's off in a parallel world. The answer is simple: "she doesn't recognise him as he lands in London in 2004 - months before they actually first met". This could also explain the return appearance of The Master (John Simm).
The paper also reports that former James Bond star Timothy Dalton will be playing a villain in the final two-parter. What role specifically is unknown.
The Doctor Gets Animated
May 27, 2009 by Michael Hickerson || Category: TV News
We're down to only three more on-screen appearances by David Tennant as the tenth Doctor. And while the last three specials aren't scheduled to air until later this year, fans can get a fix of the tenth Doctor in the fall when the BBC's red button service will air the animated "Doctor Who" story, "Dreamland." The series will be seven episodes long and similar to last year's "The Infinite Quest."
Each episode will run about six minutes and star Tennant as the voice of the Doctor. He'll be joined by actress Georgia Moffett, Lisa Bowerman and David Warner according to the Den of Geek.
The story is by Phil Ford, the co-writer of the upcoming "The Waters of Mars" with Russell T. Davies. Ford has also written scripts for "The Sarah Jane Adventures" and "Torchwood."
And in a related "Doctor Who" story, Russell T. Davies is hinting that the tenth Doctor could guest star in an upcoming segement of "The Sarah Jane Adventures."
Doctor Who assistant is unveiled
This is Karen Gillan's biggest role yet
(http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45840000/jpg/_45840965_who_bbc226b.jpg)
Little-known actress Karen Gillan has been unveiled as the next assistant in Doctor Who.
The 21-year-old will star alongside new Time Lord Matt Smith in the new series, to be broadcast next year.
Gillan has already appeared in the drama, having played a Soothsayer in The Fires Of Pompeii in the last run.
"I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. - I just can't wait to get started," she said.
'Incredible actor'
"The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it.
"Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him," she added.
Head of Drama, BBC Wales, Piers Wenger said she brings "energy and excitement" to the role.
"When she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special," he said.
The 2010 series is a crucial one for the programme. David Tennant has been such a big part of the show's success, that expectations for his successor are huge.
So the choice of a relative unknown to accompany the new Doctor in The Tardis is an unsurprising one.
If a well-known actress had been chosen, there would always be the danger that they would overshadow Matt Smith in his first series.
And The Doctor needs to be the main focus of the show, even though the companion role is much more significant now than it was in the classic series between 1963 and 1989.
Writer and executive producer Steven Moffat said they saw some "amazing actresses" but Gillan "walked through the door the game was up".
He described her as "funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it".
"A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too," he added.
Gillan, from Inverness, developed a love for acting after attending several youth theatre groups and taking part in various school productions.
At the age of 16, she decided to pursue her career further and left school to study acting at Edinburgh's Telford College.
She went on to secure a place at the Italia Conti drama school in London and landed her first role in the Scottish drama Rebus.
Parts in Channel 4's Stacked, The Kevin Bishop Show and James Nesbitt's forthcoming film Outcast followed, but the role in Doctor Who is her first high profile to date.
Oh you beat me to it by two mins ha ha

Doctor Who The Waters Of Mars Exclusive Clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEhLwWWF0KM#ws-lq-lq2-hq)
Looks like Matt Smith's costume for Dr Who is going back to the original. Photograph published today on the internet (can't put one up here as writing via phone but i'm sure someone will pop it up) shows Matt in a white shirt, bow tie, brown tweed suit jacket and black rolled up trousers a bit like a 1950's student in America ha ha. Side parted hair cut as well. So filming has begun for the new series and hopefully I'll have some more reports as i find them.
Here's a picture I found..
Good man Kenny i knew you'd get the picture in. I still can't see it but guessing it's the one where he is sitting down with his companion. Of course if it's not i'm going to have to get to a computer quick, which will take 40 mins in fact. ;-)
NEW DOCTOR, NEW TARDIS
Ok here are some more pictures plus with the new tardis. Now What do you think before i start. (put it this way i'm dancing over here)
and a few more with a guest star.
Alex Kingstons back!!!!!
Very interesting costume choices. I like the Doctor's new ensemble for the most part, but I'm not quite sure how I feel about Matt Smith wearing a bowtie...
I LOVE the new TARDIS, but not yet sold on the Doctor's outfit.
The new Tardis is closer to an actual real life Police Box. You'll notice on the right hand side there is a small circle, this is the St John Ambualance sign.
Here are some real life Police Boxes, the first is at Avoncroft which is about 5 mins away from me which is fun becasue i get to go and hug it 9i have no shame)
Don't want to rain on anyone's parade but I think Dr.Who's next season might suck. He looks like he regenerated and took a poor old man's clothes from his closet.

How can you judge how the series is going to do from the four or five photos we have seen. I for one will wait and see.. I loved Christopher Eccleston and when I heard David Tennant was taking over I wasn't happy.. but then I loved Tennant.. and not happy that he is leaving but I expect I'll love Matt Smith after his series airs. You should never judge a book by it's cover.. guess will find out next year.
I agree with Kenny. Actually i love the look, it's very classic Doctor. Slightly off the wall, eccentric. He's over a 1000 years old remember so he's allowed to mix and match his clothes it's not like he goes to wallmart shopping. :-)
I jut think I won't be able to get behind the fact that the youngest doctor is wearing the oldest looking clothes. If it was an older guy then that looks perfect I think he should wear what Christopher Eccleston wore, matches the younger looking doctor. I will probably become a huge fan but right now I have doubts.
Remember this. The 9th Doctor is wearing battle gear. He's in black, he's just come out of a war, that's what his clothing represents. You think this costume looks weird, go back and look at the 6th Doctors coat, Woah that is terrible.

the celery? I just don't like how it looks like he is wearing a coat older then him, shows how young he is.
and now for something completely different...
has anyone wondered how they are going to add River Song to this? She had a wonderful life with the doctor but the next 3 "movies" probably won't explain it. I am thinking the 12th or 13th doctor will mysteriously look like an older Tenant. Oh and will the series end at 13th or will he be resurrected by the time lords?
You know i can explain the celery but i'm not going to lol. Well River Song (his wife ?) Knows about his regenerations so it's most likely going to be a later incarnation of even the alternate version of the 10th Doctor. In fact i have a feeling all is not how it seems with River Song , i think it's someone who is going to be very dark. Now what about the Tardis?
What about the TARDIS? It seems odd it got more rigid I thought they were just going to change the "desktop theme" as Hartell called it in "Children in need" But how can it get more rigid?
It was the 5th doctor who said the desk top theme which was Peter davison. The Tardis is now how it should look like. I'm sure i posted pictures of real police boxes. In essence it looks like the same shell just with more authentic paint colour, the right type of windows and the ingenious addition of the st johns ambulance sign which all boxes had in the early 60'S. In fact if you watch the very first episode when the doctor puts his key in you can see the sign. Oh and it's got a new authentic lamp.
I still can't get past this new guy's hair. Get a bloody haircut Doctor! ;)
You guys seen this preview yet?

More pictures from the new DR.
Few More. Plus the new sonic screwdriver, hmmmmm.
I sure hope this kid can act because I still think he's too young to show the gravitas of The Doctor.
Oh dear. The third one worries me. Can this really be the Doctor?
Either way, I'll enjiy finding out whether he can carry it off.
I love the way everyone is having doubts. I have absolutly no doubts what so ever. Steven Moffat would not have chosen him if he didn't think he was up to the job. I love his outfit very second doctor.
Meds have you seen this new guy act in anything? Is there something I can check out that he has been in?
I saw him in a very gritty police drama earlier this year called Moses Jones see if you can find anything from there. Also he was in Ruby in the Smoke starring Billie Piper.
He's got an interesting movie coming out in the future called "Womb" about cloning. Here is the trailer - although he doesn't do much acting in this clip.
Womb trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8Oujip3nJQ#lq-lq2-hq)
He does seem young for the part but I'll give him a chance. I was unsure about David Tennant when he replaced Eccleston but about mid-season, it was like "Christopher who?" :)
People said the same when peter took over from tom baker so it's nothing new.

I don't have any doubts about the actor ... the clothing and haircut, I could do without, but I have no problems with the actor.

Ah. Something on the BBC to set the DVR for at last :)
Thanks for the heads up!
NEW INTERIOR SHOTS AND FILMING.
Interior shots from the backdrop inside, looks like the circles are back and a gantry.
Location filming in a village and the Dr and companion in a intresting police outfit.
Looks pretty cool!
Interesting. Can't really see enough of the inside to get a true impression.
As for the uniform...it's not exactly regulation is it.
My kind of police officer Mike lol
You know what I'm thinking. These filming shots are from the first episode. O think these are regeneration shots. One he's wearing a tie and White converse with brown striped trousers, two the Tardis is the old style not the new updated style. Three his companion wearing that outfit says hen night to me.
Do you think they're going to make a thing out of changing the TARDIS exterior then? I thought they would just slip the new one in and pretend it had always been there.
Yeah that's what I thought. I don't see the point in trying to explain the change. If it actually visually changes then what's going on with the chameleon circuit.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE DOCTOR WHO SPECIALS
ARE LANDING ON BBC AMERICA
"Mars, 2059. Bowie Base one. Last recorded message: don´t drink the water.
Don´t even touch it. Not one drop." - The Waters of Mars
New York, NY; October 30, 2009 - The BBC today announced the imminent arrival of the final Doctor Who episodes starring David Tennant as the Doctor. Television's longest running science fiction series, shot in HD, has just three episodes to go before a new Doctor arrives on screen next year.
The next special, Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars, airs on BBC AMERICA, Saturday December 19, 9:00pm ET/PT. It stars Tennant and British stage and screen actress Lindsay Duncan (Rome, Langford) as Adelaide, his cleverest and most strong-minded companion.
All will be revealed as the Doctor and his companion Adelaide face terror on the Red Planet in one of the scariest adventures yet. Peter O'Brien (Casualty, Neighbours) guest stars as Ed, Adelaide's second-in-command at the base.
The Waters of Mars is written by Russell T Davies (Torchwood, Queer as Folk) and Phil Ford, and directed by Graeme Harper. The executive producers are Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner (Torchwood, Life on Mars).
The remaining episodes, starring Tennant, will air over the holiday season as a two-part special. Airdates will be released in early December. Tennant shot a total of four specials before exiting the role - Planet of the Dead was the first one to air, last July, on BBC AMERICA.
The BBC will release The Waters of Mars and the two-part finale on DVD and Blu-ray, Tuesday, February 2, 2010. Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead is already available on DVD and Blu-ray. Releasing on February 2 are:
* Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars - DVD SRP: $14.98 / BD SRP: $19.89
* Two-part special (2-disc release) - DVD SRP: $24.98 / BD SRP: $29.99
* Doctor Who: Specials Collection (5-disc release) - DVD SRP: $49.98 / BD SRP: $59.99 - contains The Next Doctor, Planet of the Dead, The Waters of Mars and the two-part finale
The iconic sci-fi series originally aired on the BBC from '63 - '89 and ran on over 400 PBS stations in the '80s. This slick re-imagination of Doctor Who, created by Russell T Davies puts a fresh spin on the adventures of the iconic Time Lord and his feisty companions - who travels across the universe to protect Earth from dangerous aliens and terrifying monsters.
Doctor Who has received 67 awards in total: two BAFTAs, including Best Drama Series in '06, three Hugo Awards for Best Dramatic Presentation: Short Form in '06, '07 and '08 as well as the Saturn Award for Best International Series in '08. Doctor Who has two hit spin-off series: Torchwood, which gets its name from an anagram of Doctor Who, and one for children, The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Just a reminder and a correction...
Next Dr Who special showing early evening on Sunday 15th here. Less than two days to go!
DOCTOR WHO THE WATERS OF MARS
Well this was a great episode, (although classic Who fans will see nods to old episodes here) no spoilers here, not even going to put anything in a spoiler section.
You will love this epsisode, David Tennant is awesome in this and you can tell that this is the build up to the last two episodes. There are some sequencies in this which is heart breaking, the music that accompanies the slow motion scenes brought me close to tears, the speech in the lift is just so moving its what makes The Doctor, you see and hear him saying the problems of being him, what he brings, what he does and what it is to be a time lord that cannot change certain points in time. And for that we love him and we feel pity for him, he is a time lord with two hearts who constantky has them broken becasue of his love for humans.
Unfortunatley like everyone, when you are constantly hurt, constantly troubled it turns tyou inot something you hate.
The last sound, you hear, the last noise. Thats the noise, of trouble.
END OF TIME teaser trailer
After todays episode, they gave us this. (dont watch if you dont want to see who turns up at the Christmas episode)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQpWqHWMkmk
Well... what a ride! Not at all what I expected but...I can't really say any more outside a big spoiler tag!
Look forward to Dec 19th US people (or whenever you get hold of this).
Most of the way through, it seemed very atypical Who. The Doctor watching but keeping one step back. I looked at the timer after 44 minutes and decided nothing much else could happen. Boy was I wrong!
The end was incredible! Not from an action and explosions point of view so much as where The Doctor's actions took him. The way he reacted to what he had done was disturbing to say the least but the follow up after the death and then with the watching character to one side and the...noise of the TARDIS was just so hauntingly familiar from years ago.
Roll on next episode!
I also caught the Ice Warriors references and a few other throwbacks to series both new and old. Tennant and Davies are obviously going to go out with a bit of a bang.
Recording the Confidential tonight and will watch it tomorrow.

Looks really good though....and we now know (as if we didn't already) who the "bad guy" is going to be.
Ah! Missed it on CIN but should have known I'd find it here :) Thanks for putting it up!
Hmmm. I do have to say, I'm not wholly impressed with the TARDIS key fob lock.
Normaly Mike I'd agree but actualy I found that quite cool, Drs not right is he.

Some info with some dates for the US airings:
Final David Tennant Doctor Who Special, "The End Of Time", Gets U.S. Premiere Date
BBC America has announced that an airdate for the last of David Tennant's "Doctor Who" specials. "The End Of Time, Part One" will air on Saturday, December 26th at 9:00 p.m., just a day after it premieres in the UK. The premiere date for part two will be announced soon. In the meantime, BBC has released a sneak peek video from the special which you can watch below along with stills and videos from the special and the penultimate David Tennant special "The Waters of Mars" (which airs in the U.S. on December 19th). And lastly outgoing showrunner Russell T. Davies debunked rumors suggesting he would be making a movie based on the property.
New Advert (the Gruffalo is first then Dr Who) for the last two episodes. Spoilers in the clips.

New filming shots in Croatis.
Ok, just saw the Children in Need bit. I caught something...
The Ood said "He is returning, they are returning". The children in need is telling part of the Dr Who story. So does that mean a possible return of the Timelords? I know Timothy Dalton will be in the new specials dressed as a Timelord. I just assumed one Timelord will be back, now I'm thinking possibly all of them.
We all know the Master is comming back.. :P I'm not talking about him.
;)
To answer your question Scott I would say yes
I agree - interesting that it follows a change at the helm of the show too. I wonder if both show runners agreed on this.
I want to hear more about Dr Who and the Gruffalo from Meds' post above ;)
Ha ha what a story that would be.
Moffat has his own agenda but I think they would definately have said look I want to do this and that next year let's set this up.

Yes I saw this earlier along with a special Christmas BBC channel promotion. Good to see the master still banging on about his drums.
Finally tonight on BBC America we get "Water of Mars." And next weekend just after Christmas we will be getting the first part to the "End of Time." Been way too long since I've seen any new "Doctor Who."
Enjoy :) It's a little different to most that have gone before and you'll have to forgive...but that would be a spoiler!
We got what I think is the entirity of the animated adventure on BBC2 this morning. I haven't seen it yet but did manage to catch it on DVR quite by chance. Hopefully I'll get to see it tonight.
You will not be disappointed, Rico. I think it does a fine job of setting up the beginning of the end... just typing that sent shivers up my spine. Let us know what you think! :)
"Waters of Mars" was pretty cool and it is a good setup it seems for what is coming. David Tennant is still so awesome as the Doctor, I'm going to miss him so much. Loved the intensity of the last part of the episode. Really good stuff. Can't wait to see next week's first part to the "End of Time."
This week's first part. We get it, as is traditional, on Christmas day and the DVR is now set.
This little part from "Waters of Mars" was awesome!

The End of Time Part 1
Emotional, moving, history of the time lords, childhood memories. David Tennant is awesome, John Simm is pure magic and Bernard Cribbins is just wonderful.
You're going to love it, but try not to eat your turkey like The Master.

Sounds great! Airing here tomorrow on BBC America.
You will love it, I'm a bit dubious on two things. Not sure if it's a homage or a rip off but think stargate and star wars.
You will love it, The scene with Wilfred and The Dr in the cafe is heart breaking but the end, oh my what a cliff hanger.
Holy crap!

I liked it, but for me it wasn't the best episode. I don't know what was missing, but I think it might be the kind of slow buildup.
I love the cliffhanger, but I felt no sense of danger or urgency. Maybe it's because we know what will happen in the very end?

Yeah, I think I saw what Mike saw. It was a bit ... pedestrian. Nothing really got me excited until the last few minutes.
I was expecting something to give the last season finale a run, but it was more like just another episode. The bar was raised and this one didn't reach the heights of what came before it.
Just finished watching and loved every minute it. I think it did exactly what it was suppose to do.. make you excited for part two and the final David Tennant episode... I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!
I liked it quite a bit too. Just watched it a little while ago. Good setup for the next part. Two-part episodes always have to setup a lot more than they can solve - obviously. Looking forward to the second part next weekend.

Dont quite get you Mike. The only question was the cliff hanger at the end. Everything else was fairly obvious. There was some old past history mentioned which was nice fir the classic fans. The Master coming back via the ring and the use of the Saxon followers was a old nod a old Master episode and even the tv movie whth Eric Roberts playing the role.
Yes, but...
the flying? The electric hands? What was the justification for that? It was more heroes than Dr Who. I'm not a classic Master buff but that seemed over the top and with no attempt at a justification took me out of the story completely.
The Ood seemed to be plugged in just to fill a gap in running time (although I expect that to be justified next week) and while Wilf's bus of wrinklies were amusing I don't feel they added anything to the story.
Timothy Dalton and the Timelords were undeniably an exciting prospect and I'm looking forward to the resolution of that - I hope we get a lot more of them next time.
Still. We'll see.

Hmmm
I'm no expert but I thought it was explained that The Master had those abilities because he was using his own lifeforce energy to manifest them?
Yep - I agree with the above.
I thought the explanation about The Master's powers was fine. They had to give him an edge somehow. What I didn't get was why so many people seemed to remember him? I thought the Doctor fixed all that?
That may be the explanation they gave
but I felt that only explained that as a result of the botched resurrection he was burning the energy just to survive, not to get superhero powers. Why should timelords suddenly be able to do that? The powers just seemed to be used to add a bit of 'zing' to a slow story.
I'm pleased it worked for most but for me it was just too 'not Doctor Who'. In fact, with a day or so to think now, I think it took me to the point where if they weren't changing team next year I'd be seriously worried about what outlandish creations we were going to get.
I am by no means an expert but,....
The reason the Master could do all that stuff was due to the unique way he was brought back to life - not just because he was a time lord. Again, I thought it worked for the story. I did enjoy when he ate that whole turkey in like 30 seconds! LOL!
I think it's going to take us 30 days to get through our turkey!
Whateer the justifications, let's see how it all plays out in a weeks time.

Interesting idea but not one that had occured to me if I'm honest.
Well I'm not sure it's Omega because he is stuck in the anti-matter universe last I heard. But he is pissed enough to end time. It ALMOST sounded like the Timelords at the end of the last episode wanted to end time.
As for Rassilon, he's immortal so he could be around, but who knows where the other Timelords came from.

It's on tonight at 6.40 can't wait :)
Set to record. I had my doubts over last week but this still promises to be a memorable episode.

Well this was a awesome ride. Some very emotional stuff, everyone first class. The ending is sooooo unexpected you will be so surprised and pleased but also incredibly moved. Boy I love this show.
I want to see it now!!!!
I so want to chat to you about it. Best 75 mins a Who fan could want.
Kids are nearly in bed. I'll get to it...
Sorry Meds, I'm of a different opinion. I thought it was all so very.....meh!
I was underwhelmed to say the least, it didn't grab me emotionally. I've shead physical tears in the past when Who becomes emotional. Tennants departure should have done that, buit didn't.
Story was okay...in fact it all was okay. Nothing more....and it should have been. I think I enjoyed Superman Returns which was shown earlier slightly more than this conclusion...
I hope I change my mind later on....but I doubt it!
I haven't seen it yet, but considering that Mike and I was of similar opinion of PArt 1, I think that I'm going to be disappointed with part two
For me I'm a classic Who fan have had my moans about the new series. Yes I think the last episode could have had a bit more oomph but I think if you are a DT fan you'll appreciate the wrap up.
Nothing beats the 5th Drs last story anyway lol
I've just seen the trailer for Matt Smith's season. Bloody he'll !!!!
It is looking like it's going to be a good onebringing Wh!! I've got a lot of faith in Matt Smith. I heard they were looking at having an older Doctor after DT, kinda like the William Hartnell version of the Doctor, but they saw Matt Smith's acting ability, asked him to try out for the role and instantly fell in love with his portrayal of the character.
Expect to be blown away by this new incarnation of the Doctor!!
Started a new thread all about the 11th Doctor.
Spotted it too late. Kept trying to delete that post and it won't let me. Keeps telling me to log out and back in...which I do and then it still won't and tells me the same....meh! Ignore what I wrote before!! :)
Well without spoilers. I called it... :P
With slight spoiler...
I knew he was Rassilon! :P
I guess lowered expectations cause for a better experience. I loved this one. I got emotional at several parts.
The main story was a little lacklustre at times with some of what I griped about still unexplained. That will always annoy me.
The closure was fascinating, however, and the character moments were just about all they could have been. I did get emotionally sucked into the ending to an extent, it could have been greater but probably not in what's supposed to be a kids show.
We now have no idea where or if The Master is which is always good but I hope he sheds his force ligtbing abilities if he comes back.
I guessed early on that it had been The Doctor who'd banished the Time Lords. His attitude gave it away. Good call on Rassilon BTW.
Glad they didn't suck Donna into it big time and while seeing everyone else did nothing to add to the story it was nice to see his final round of farewells. The Doctor rarely if ever visits previous companions post-regeneration so you got the sense of a final goodbye moment there.
Good overall. The main thrust could have been better but the end was enough compensation.
Good points Mike. I agree with everything you said I think it was more RTd saying goodbye lol.
Regenerations got to love it :)

Th two lines that really grabbed me emotionally by surprise were...
The Masters "Get out of the way" before he force lighteninged Rassilon. Not an entirely selfless act I agree but he still didn't need to warn The Doctor.
The final "I don't want to go". Was there just a bit of long time Who fan Tennant in that line? He's said he needed to force himself to move on.
The irony that it was Wilf who forced the regeneration rather than the Timelords wasn't lost on me either although I wish they'd explained who the mysterious woman was.
I read in another forum that the mysterious woman could be Donna herself. The Doctor saw something he recognized in the woman's eyes.
I initially thought she might be a watcher. The Ood seemed a little more in that vein though since he was appearing in impossible places i.e. on earth.
That's true...we never got an explanation for the rapid Ood advanement did we?

The Woman was the Dr's mother
Where did that little nugget come from??? Did I miss something?
And how could she communicate with Wilf?
The UK Telegraph is reporting that actress Claire Bloom will be starring alongside David Tennant in his final story as Doctor Who – and she'll be playing his mother.
Bloom, who is 78, now resides in London. It is well known that her Hollywood film career was sparked after being discovered by the renowned Charlie Chaplin, since which she went on to appear in more than a hundred films and television series.
A friend of the actress apparently told the Daily Mail: "The script is a very closely guarded secret, as the producers are desperate for Claire's appearance to be a surprise."
Bloom's American Manager Marion Rosenberg reportedly said: "It is happening. They are filming at the moment. I have been organising her schedule."
and in todays times review
Last night, this erratic wrongness increased: having fought Daleks, Cybermen and Satan without once killing — he always makes his enemies destroy themselves — the Doctor found himself wielding a gun at the President, apparently really an actor called Timothy Dalton. I know. It's news to me. And guess who was watching all this unfold? The Doctor's Mum! I know again! Parents always choose the most inconvenient moments to turn up.
Nothing revealed on screen then. Do you think she's part of a hand over to the new era?
Just watched the last episode and thought it was fantastic! Not sure what folks expected but I really, really loved it. Doing "sort of" a last episode of something is always a very hard thing to do and I feel they really nailed it. I'll write more tomorrow once it has sunk in a bit more. But I will say, I'm going to miss David a ton. I sure wouldn't want to be this Matt Smith kid - he has HUGE shoes to fill.

maybe, Time Lord parentage is always tricky especially if you start thinking about workings in the novel universe like lungbarrow. Who knows it's bound to be mentioned again. It's all telepathy along with the ood.
LOVED IT... finally was able to sit down and watch tonight. I really enjoyed this episode, I liked how we got to see all the companions (Jack, Martha, Mickey, Rose...) it was like a finale goodbye to these guys as we more then likely won't ever see them again. Loved The Doctors and Wilf interaction, favorite part of the finale two episodes.
I think it was a great ending to a wonderful run..but I'm ready for a new doctor... I loved Chris Eccleston and wasn't fond of David Tennant but grew to love him.. I expect it will be the same with Matt Smith. Can't wait for Spring and new WHO.
Strangely, it's Wilf I'll miss as much as this version of the Doctor. If he'd had the opportuity, I think he could have grown into an interesting full time companion over another few episodes.
The Doctor has always been the 'older man' (in human actor terms, not Timelord 900 year-old terms) but I'm not sure he's ever been accompanied by an older man. It could have made for an interesting dymanic.
Bernard Cribbins really did very well from Voyage of the Damned onwards. It's interesting to see him in there since, for my generation, his was the voice we grew up with narrating the Wombles stories to us on the BBC in the evenings. A far cry from Wilfred Mott.
