Title: SMF 2.0 upgrade
Post by: Rico on June 18, 2011, 03:47:04 PM
I'm in the midst of upgrading the forum to version 2.0.  So, hang in there for now.  Hopefully this will all work out ok.   :biggrin

Yeah - just bear with me to get it all looking ok.  At least the main upgrade of files went ok and I didn't trash the forum!  ;)

Great Work Rico, I know these types of things take a lot of time fixing all the plugins and other formatting

I like this new skin Rico! It's pretty classy!! The only thing is I can't find the link for "unread" posts. Is that still to be added?

Edit - Never mind! I found it. It's now at the top right instead of left. That will just take some getting used to.

Keep in mind I'll still be adjusting things a bit more over the next few days, or week.  There are still some features to get put back in place.  But overall, things are coming together nicely.

I really like this new look, its all silky and smooth. Big Thumbs up. I did notice when i opened up a spoiler tag from a old link I had to highlight the words to read them. This must be loads of hard work to do  this kind of change.

I see that now too Meds about spoiler tags text color (I think it's doing it on new spoiler tags too).  I'll see if I can fix that somehow.  Glad you like the new look!

Ok - got the spoiler text color changed now.  Made it red since I thought that made it look all secret and special!
Why are you reading this?  Go see "Super 8" now!
The smileys are showing the same emotions as ones shown before, but these ones just look different. Just by a little :D

Funny that I never even knew that the spoiler tag was gone. Weird. :o

Looking good!

Sounds like it's been a little hard work porting the forum over, are there any benefits to you as an administrator upgrading or is it just for cosmetic reasons?

Yes, there are benefits.  The design (inside the admin area) is cleaner, but also more robust.  They've been working on SMF 2.0 for years now and it has a lot of "under the hood" tweaks that make it run better.  Also, there are more available mods and things for it too.  The "looks" is just a new theme I'm using and have tweaked a little.  So yeah, lots of pluses.

Hmmm, that's an odd one.  I'll turn the news fader off for now until I can work on that.

I fear change, and realize I'm outvoted, but I liked the way it was before.

Hey...nothing wrong with having an opposing view! Heck I'm quite usually on the opposite side in many topics. It just happens that in this case I'm not.  ;D

Just so you guys know, in order to do the upgrade to version 2.0, the look (theme) had to change.  The old theme wasn't compatible with SMF 2.  I tried to find something close, that had a nice look and I felt fit the forum.  I'll be looking into other "themes" at some point, but for now I think this will be good.

Seems like a smooth upgrade so far, not that I'm all that advanced a user.

My favourite feature of SMF 2.0 is the transparent smartphone compatibility:

From your smartphone: http://www.treksinscifi.com/forum/index.php?;wap2 (http://www.treksinscifi.com/forum/index.php?;wap2)

Might even work on any number of less-featured phones, too.

Edit: fix smartphone link. *smack* bad geek...

I'm sure I'll get used to it.  Being here practically every day you get to feel like it's like an old comfortable slipper or something similar.
