This started a week ago here in the UK and i believe it is going to be shown in the States soon (maybe PBS??). I love it, i really do. Now a few years ago i was at a dinner at the Houses of Parliament, it was for the Sherlock Holmes Society of London and Mark Gatiss was the guest speaker and his guest that he brought with him was Steven Moffat (geek overload). During his speech he mentioned they had a idea for a modern up to date Sherlock series which I, being a Holmes geek was a bit put off by.
Any way they went and wrote it and have made three 90 min episodes and so far I have seen two and loved every minute of it.

Here is a brief statement.

Co-created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the new Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as his loyal friend, Doctor John Watson. Rupert Graves plays Inspector Lestrade.

The iconic details from Conan Doyle's original books remain – they live at the same address of 221b Baker Street, have the same names and, somewhere out there, Moriarty is waiting for them.

Steven Moffat says: "Conan Doyle's stories were never about frock coats and gas light; they're about brilliant detection, dreadful villains and blood-curdling crimes – and frankly, to hell with the crinoline. Other detectives have cases, Sherlock Holmes has adventures, and that's what matters."

This three part series started on 25 July.

Benedict is brilliant as Holmes and Martin pulls off a modern day Watson with incredible ease.

I have never been a fan of Sherlock Holmes, I'll get that one out in the open right now. What with ITV3 showing it pretty much all the time in amongst Poirot.

However, for the past three weeks, every Sunday, I have tuned in to watch Sherlock. I was pretty much enticed from the trailers that they showed especially with Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character. He seemed to have that air of arrogance that is so annoying, yet you know he's right and that is perfectly balanced with Martin Freeman's character Watson who tries to bring out the human side of Sherlock. Both characters are extremely complex and the way that Moffatt has bought it bang up to date is amazing. I really like the way they use texts messages and technology in the show and there is a sense of humour in amongst it that works too. Would love more of the same so I really can't wait for season two!
Captain Kathryn Janeway: [entering the mess hall] Coffee, black.
Neelix: Uh, sorry, Captain. We lost two more replicators this morning...
Captain Kathryn Janeway: Listen to me very carefully, because I'm only going to say this once: Coffee. Black.
Neelix: Yes, ma'am.

Is there only 3 episodes for the first season?

I've just caught up with the first two on iPlayer but recorded the last one on Sunday.

I wasn't sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised at what I got. despite the modern trappings, I felt that the character of Holmes (particularly) came across very well. He was maybe a little more arrogant and distant from from other than some have portrayed in the past but it worked very well.

I was cynical about inserting the characters into the modern world but it actually made no negative difference to the enjoyability of the stories.

Are they doing more?

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

Yes Mike. New set of three episodes all at 90 mins coming next year.

Keep them few and long. Some things just don't need 22 episodes do they :)

I do think this would suffer from the over-exposure of a long run so I think they're on the right lines.

Wonderful script, you'd think that such a long run thing as Sherlock Holmes would loose "interesting-ness" after a while, but this is such a unique rendition!
What a flavourful expression on your face.

And three more coming next year, looks like next year is going to be goos for Moffat

...if they can find the time to write them. 3 ninety minute episodes are no tall order and with the potential double-season of Who (or whatever they're doing), I think they may be pushed to find the time.

I hope they manage it, if only to resolve the rather annoying ending to the last one.

I finally got to watch 'A Study in Pink'.  The new Sherlock seems great - but I am still on the fence about Watson.  You can generally count me as a fan of Martin, but I am not totally converted as to how he is playing Dr. Watson.  This one will probably end up staying on my plate I would imagine.

Have you seen Martin in Boy Meets Girl?  Hilarious.  As to his Watson, I will agree to an extent...I didn't care for him in the first episode, but by the time I'd seen all three I had warmed.

I generally really like him as an actor - and even enjoyed him in 'Love Actually'.  I'll watch the remaining few episodes, and see if I warm up to his Watson.  As for all the other modernizations - so far I am sold.  If I am going to nit-pick, I might have a mild disapproval of Lestrade.
