Ok, so I'm doing my final paper for the this year at university. I've decided to do it on the internet and social networking. So could you please help me with a few things

A) Do you, as users of Treks in Sci-fi consider this site to be a Newsgroup?

B) if so, what are the differences between this and a social networking site such as Facebook?

C) If not, why?

D) Since sites like the birth of on-line society's and social networking sites have becoming popular there has been an ongoing argument as to whether they increased peoples social circles I.E the 'Global Community' Or have they made people less social

please can people help me as much as possible?

Thanks loads and loads

Joostin

Maybe you want to put a minimum of effort into your work before annoying people?

A) It's called a definition, and if you want to be all sciency you want to look them up first. Throwing terms around without understanding what they mean is a bad idea. This, obviously, is a Internet forum, and not a Newsgroup. Says so in the title: "Forum"
http://www.sharpened.net/glossary/definition.php?newsgroup
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_forum
(And you don't want to quote wikipedia in your paper, find a legit source for that, one of those book things would be nice.)

B) This is more of an online community than an social network, maybe read some wikipedia and ask a better question?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_networking
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Online_community

C) I don't even know if this question refers to A or B, I hope it's A because B would be even more stupid.

D) What a broad wide statement, maybe you want to, you know, do some research and find some studies concerning this topic? Or read some papers? Go to your library, they usually offer courses on how to use their search systems (both books and online resources), they are a bit more difficult than google, but it's time well spend, do it as soon as possible. Really. Go tomorrow.

Generally I'm not against surveys, that's often how Sociology works. But you have to put some effort there first. Don't expect other people to do your homework, and make a quick google search for a first impression (took me 10 minutes).

"Internet and social networking" is an awful big field, you'll probably have to concentrate on a smaller field. In doubt talk to whoever this paper is for, they usually want to help you. (Do a bit of research first and then ask specific questions, otherwise you just waste your and their time.)

That's what I consider helping and you're welcome.

Hmmm...tell me more about these things called...what was it you called them...'books'?  Are they like these 8-track or cassette tapes others have hinted at in the past?  Perhaps an old fashioned Kindle, maybe?  :)

You got me there! Books are something I love to send the freshmen after, it's the university equivalent of left-handed screwdrivers or aluminum magnets. It's just too much fun, I'm sorry! ;)

well, not sure i can give much advice on how to do your project, but here's the answers to your questions:

A) nah, it's more of a forum, but we do a fair amount of new sharing as well.

B) i'd have to agree, this is more of an online community than social networking. it's more like a group of star trek fans than a giant clumped together facebook.

C) i don't consider it to be a newsgroup because as i understand it a newsgroup is a group that shares news, news and only news. we also share other things as well, like say what's going on with the weather in a very informal way and that sort of thing. but there is a little bit of news sharing as well. so i guess it's kinda a combination, but more forum than news.

D) it depends what you call social. there's a pretty fuzzy connection between most of us on the community, so maybe it's weakened social connections. but, it has expanded the number of people i know (not necessarily how well i know them). in turn i spend less time with people who i do have the strong connections with. so, all in all, i think it's made me less social.

so, there you go! good luck on your project, and yep, books are handy too! surveys are good only if you do them over a really large number of people. treks in sci fi might not be big enough. so make sure to ask other people too, if you haven't already. that's what they say in science.

Wow, ok DOCTOR (it's obvious you MUST have a PhD) back the truck up a bit. The dude is just trying to get some help. Don't recall him asking for us to DO his homework for him...And for the record, Wikipedia is NOT an acceptable source material for most universities. And yes, I know that for fact. I happen to have 2 Masters and and Undergrad degree in Behavioral Science and I work for a University! :) And for the record, I'm also left handed so I take umbrage (use Wikipedia for a definition if you must) at your "left-handed screw driver" remark...:)

Okay guys, the post is almost two years old now, everyone chill.  How did your project go, Joostin, if you even remember?

Funny, but I hadn't even noticed that the original posts were from a year ago! That's my old age showing. Well, better my old age showing then my _____ showing! :)

No worries, it was a bit out of line but best to let sleeping dogs lie.

Lol, Katya (Cosmonaut) hasn't been on the site for almost a year too, doubt she'll see this and get offended.
