New Crossover/SUV

I am in buying mode to replace one of my Vehicles.... its primary use is for lugging things over to the beach, picking up a few things at Lowe's yard stuff and home improvement and taking some road trips up North. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with either of these Cars, 2012 Suburu Outback 2.51 6 speed manual Premium or the Kia Sportage SX Turbo AWD, the new Kia's are suppose to be good but i am still Leary of them. I drove the VW Tiguan and found it very nice but you can get much more for your $$$ from other Vehicles. Any advice or input is greatly appreciated....AWD isn't a must as we don't really have winter where i live.
