This is nine inch nails-

Nine Inch Nails is a guy named Trent Reznor and various other support musicians.  He/They are a pop-industrial group that hit it big in the late 80's/early 90's with the album "Pretty Hate Machine".  The music makes heavy use of synthesizers, samples, and other electronica, along with guitars and other instruments that are altered to produce a dark, driving, heavy electronic sound.  The rhythmic beats and catchy phraseology used by the group made thier music popular in many night clubs.

The music isn't for everybody.  While Reznor is arguably something of a musical genius, he also seems to have some serious issues to work out.   A lot of the themes and subject matter used in many of the songs are considered by some to be both sadistic and masochistic, and many of the songs are somewhat sexually explicit.  It has also been argued that some of the songs flirt with being anti-religious.

I think a big part of the music's appeal when it first came out was that it resonated with MTV's main target demographic- folks in their late teens to early twenties who were looking to use their taste in music to buck the status quo and set themselves apart from the previous generation.

Personally, I don't agree with some of what Reznor sings about, but many of his songs resonate as being true.  Some of his videos are very artistic, while others are difficult to watch.  I like his ability to produce complex and almost hypnotic beats, and the fact that some of his lyrics challenge you to think.

I've always loved NIN. To add further to what Wraith said. Trent kind of discovered and produced the first manson CD.

No problem.  You know Johnny Cash, right?

Well; he did a pretty cool cover of a Nine Inch Nails song called "Hurt".

And the original version...

Warning; there's some disturbing imagery here--
