'Surface' is one of those shows that got canned after one season with a kick-ass ending, it should have at least had a one-off special just to finish it  >:(. The basic premise was sea monsters, secret science organisations and the possible end of the world.... cheesy as anything but how can you not love something that features sea monsters? I thought it was a cross between 'The Triangle' and what 'Invasion' could have been.

I have much love for this random little series :D

One of my recent favs too!  I've talked about it a few times on the podcast.  Look for it to be covered in my upcoming "Wet Sci-Fi" podcast - SF shows involving the oceans.

I only saw the first couple of episodes of this, it was hidden away on ITV3 somewhere, it looked pretty good actually.
I remember in that year there were a few shows cancelled after only one season. "Invasion" which I thought was okay but ended on a real bum note, and "Threshold" which I didn't catch.

BTW. Does anyone know how many seasons "Jeramiah" ran for? They only showed one season over here and I really quite enjoyed it.

I'm a sucker for science fiction involving oceans or sea monsters ('Meg' by Steve Alten is an awesome read, who needs 'Jaws' when you've got a rouge megalodon?)

If at all possible, would you be able to find out the name of an Aussie (possible New Zealand) children's show that was set on an underwater research lab, the kids had befriended some mermaids? It was very, very odd.

Loved Surface and was bummed when it was cancelled after that huge cliffhanger. I know the creators went on record saying that they would find a way to resolve it.. but so far I haven't heard anything.

I know there was a thread on this series back when it aired but I can't find it.. oh well..

Yes this was one of my wifes favorite shows.  Coincidentally, when it got cancelled, it is also when her opinion of TV Exec's began it's downward spiral.

Random question:
Is it just Scifi shows that get cancelled like this, or is it the same ratio of cancellations in the other genres?

I loved surface, the kid in the show was about my age. I remember wishing I had a pet like Nim.

Lots of shows get canned pretty quick these days.  I'm not sure if SF type stuff is any more prone to it or not.  But there certainly are many that barely make one season.

I think our perception is maybe skewed by the fact that many of us watch more Sci-Fi than anything else.  So when we see Surface, Invasion, Threshold, Jericho, Journeyman etc. get cancelled we naturally assume execs just won't stick with a sci-fi show.

Two seasons, 35 episodes in total.

I thought as much. Pity they didn't show the second season over here. Despite Luke Perry, It wasn't bad.  :)

I have to admit to getting very bored with 'Invasion' after awhile, there seemed to be an endless stream of episodes in which very little happened - I think the pacing could have been a lot better. I had the same problem with 'Lost', which did eventually loose me and I lost interest.

I've unknowingly met the creator of 'Invasion', I used to work on a (theatre) show of 'Blood Brothers' which stared Shaun Cassidy when it did it's Broadway run in '93, he came over for a visit to the London production during 2005 and wanted to talk to the guy who played his character at the time.
