Was it just me, or was that one part taken straight from the "fall on your sword" scene in Flash Gordon?

Ahh - I think that type of scene has been in a lot of movies.

Maybe so, but it seemed more blatant here. There was also the explicit Flash Gordon call out later on, which leads me to believe it was a deliberate homage. I might have squeed audibly at that point.
