I agree Rico, this is a great Show, I felt the Episode on Monday was Fantastic, and is leading up to some cool things. It is a pity that NBC is letting it go, I hope either they change their mind, or this winds up somewhere else, it is to good to let go so soon.

Its going away ??  I'm bummed.  I loved this show from the start but it needs to be on Tue at 9pm.  The 10pm slot is better for Naked Housewives or whatever the name of that show.

Journeyman's Kevin Falls Says Bye to Fans

"Journeyman" will air its last episode, tonight - Wednesday, December 19, 2007 on NBC. For now, and unless the show gets picked up by another network, some other media outlet or a future special TV or big screen movie, fans will have to comfort themselves with the 13-episode DVD, which I'm sure will be forthcoming. When it does, do as fans of Firefly did, buy them by the bucket-full. Perhaps, just perhaps that will get the attention of the network decision makers. It did, afterall, get us a "Serenity" movie.

Series creator, Kevin Falls said his final goodbye to fans on the official NBC Journeyman Blog. Here is what Kevin had to say.

To the Fans,

Well, this is the message I didn't want to post. I'm sure as most of you know by now, Journeyman will likely not be getting a back nine order. Rather than dwell on the reasons behind this decision, my fellow Executive Producer, the great Alex Graves and myself would rather remind people that our last two episodes will air next Monday night, December 17th at 10 PM and Wednesday December 19th at 10 PM. These two episodes will provide some answers, plenty of speculation, a few surprises and hopefully some satisfying closure. They are, I promise you, very entertaining.

I want to thank the tireless and talented Kevin McKidd and the entire cast (in my opinion, the best on television and guess what, the kindest and most professional). Yes, it was hard breaking stories on this show, but it would have been harder without the collective genius of the writing staff. Every guest director that passed through said our crew was the best they ever worked with, basically telling me something I already knew. Some producers loathe their relationships with studio and networks, maybe that's because they never worked for the executives at 20th Century Fox and NBC. My sincerest thanks.

And finally, to the fans. Thank you for appreciating a different kind of show that sought to not only entertain, but to provoke and inspire. I'd like to think it says a lot about you. When the numbers slipped and we sometimes seconded guessed ourselves, you gave us validation and so we stayed the course.

Oh, and your fight to save Journeyman has humbled and moved us. I'm certainly not going to tell you to stop now. Again, our sincere gratitude and a deep bow from the waist.

It's been fun. I wish you all the Happiest of Holidays.

Kevin Falls

It is us, the fans, that owe Kevin Falls, Alex Graves, Kevin McKidd and the entire cast and crew of "Journeyman" our deepest thanks for giving the audience, probably the best, smartest and most entertaining and satisfying SF program for the 2007 season. And, if I may quote Bill Pullman (President Thomas J. Whitmore) from the film 'Independence Day,' "We will not go quietly into the night," but will continue the fight to get "Journeyman" the proper respect from network executives that it deserves. For those of us who are old enough to remember, it took ten years and a love for Star Wars to get Star Trek back, so this battle has only begun.

Really looking forward to tonight's episode, but will be bittersweet, as it will be the last. Really enjoyed Mondays episode, and looking forward to some more answers. Really sad that this show is ending, as it was really great, and got stronger and stronger each week.

I was reading an article complaining about the 2007 season in general the other day. That a lot of the shows were weak, and that the networks put shows on that appeal to no one, as they are trying to satisfy everyone. Got me thinking that shows like Journeyman and a few others are more meant for Cable these days. It seems like shows like BSG can really explore stories and characters. The article mentioned the differences between BSG and Bionic Woman and how the come basically from the same source, but how Bionic Woman is muted due to being on broadcast TV. Gets me thinking the broadcast TV is meant for shows like the Biggest Loser, Big Brother and the Choir show they are hyping this week, maybe the network audience does not want anything more then that. Hopefully some of these more unique shows will go to Cable, and really get a chance. That said, did not help Dresden Files last year which was cable :(

end of my rant, back to Christmas cheer.

Rico

I agree Jeff.  It's an excellent series and deserves to continue.  I loved Monday nights episode.  Great stuff!  The actors are just superb on this series.  Some of the best I have seen in TV in recent years.  I wish network TV could strive to be better and more intelligent but with all the stupid shows on I think Hollywood thinks that's what everyone can handle.  Very sad.  Can't wait to see tonights Journeyman finale!

Last episode - WHOA !!!  Still reminds me of Quantum Leap.

Rico

That was a great episode last night!  Dang, I love this show more and more after each episode.  It's such a shame that's probably the last we will see of it.  NBC suits are idiots.  I'm so sick of ratings being the end all of what show stays on and what doesn't.  If this show had been nurtured a bit it could have had the same following as a "Lost" or "Heroes" easily.  At least we got a few answers last night and a bit of closure for the show.  Man, I miss it already.  If you haven't seen it, try and find it online and watch.  You will all really enjoy it.

jedijeff

Well at least we got some answers, and liked how they transitioned from the previous traveller to Dan. At least they left it open to continue, and finally getting some information from Professor Langly that indicated there was something larger then just Dan travelling. The more he kept secret the better, it would seem things would start getting more dangerous. I liked how Katie and Jack believe in Dan's travelling, but how his marriage will most likely continue to have problems. They ended the show off in a nice way with him travelling away. I really hope that someone will pick this up and continue it, great show, and well done.

Rico

That's awesome!  I'm putting it up on my the main web site.

I would put it up a link directly to the petition page on the main site.  There are 3 petitions but one should be enough.  One already has almost 5000 signatures.

Falls answers questions about Journeyman

Last season, NBC introduced viewers to Dan Vasser, a newspaper reporter who was mysteriously travelling through time, in the series "Journeyman."   While many readers and listeners of Slice of SciFi became passionate fans for the show, the show didn't catch on with the larger viewing public and was cancelled after 13 episodes.

And while those 13 episodes did offer closure for fans, the series had just begun to scratch the surface of where it wanted and could have gone had it been allowed to continue its story.

Now with the series gone for good, creator Kevin Falls spoke with the readers of Ain't It Cool News, offering answers to some of the burning questions left open by the series cancellation and offered a glimpse of just where "Journeyman" could have gone had NBC renewed it or another network picked up the series and allowed the story to continue.

One of the bigger unanswered questions behind the series was who or what was behind Dan's ability to travel through time.

"Let's just say it was too specific and grand to be science or government," said Falls.  And while the series may not have spelled out specifically the powers behind Dan's movement through time, it would have "led you to the water's edge and let you figure it out."

"The later conflict of the show was going to lie with those people who were trying to find the cadre of travelers. Would they try to manipulate them for their own self interests? [Recurring FBI agent] Richard Garrity was coming back for sure," Falls explained.

If the season had progressed, we would have found out more about fellow time traveller, Lydia's life in the past and would have meet her in the current time-frame.  In addition, it may have been revealed that Lydia's goal in time travelling was to help Dan and his wife, Katie, get together to bring about the birth of their son, who showed a potential to travel like Dan in several episodes.

Falls said that another potential plotline would have seen Dan working to erase the government's knowledge of his ability to travel in time.

One of the initial end points for the season would have involved a plague of some kind, that Dan would have to work to avert.  This plan was scrapped early when "Heroes" developed it's own plague storyline.

Fall went on to offer some fascinating details of the plan for the rest of season one, as mapped out by he and the writing staff.

"Katie and Dan were going to split up for a while. [Dan's brother] Jack and Dan were going to live together and then Dan and Katie would get back together. Livia was going to die in episode 20. Dan was going to save her in 21," he said.  "And in 22, Dan would come back to his house in the present like he did in the pilot and someone else would be living there. Katie and Zack would be gone and this time Dan would have no idea how to get his family back."

"And then we'd start season two. I'm getting depressed thinking about it. This staff was so f—–g smart. We would have just gotten better," said Falls.

As for the fate of the series, Falls said the blame doesn't necessarily ride with NBC for the failure of the show.

"You know, I'm not bitter toward NBC as much as I am the mainstream critics who collectively dismissed us without giving us a second look. I think when we went out we were doing some of the best TV out there. And I'm so grateful that the on-line community embraced this show, actually got the show and ended up being the wind in our sails for the second half of the season," said Falls.

Hearing these potential storylines for the show, it only reinforces the sense of regret that such a wonderful show was cut short, before it was allowed to reach its full potential.  But hopefully these answers will give some fans the closure they need and encourage those who didn't see the series to seek it out whenever its released on DVD.

Rico

Good and interesting stuff Kenny.  Thanks for posting this.  Dang - I sure miss this great show!

jedijeff

Yes, thanks for posting this, does make me regret that this show was cancelled.
