I guess the thing with Caprica is it is very much a drama first and a sci fi show second (even more so then Galactica was). If you aren't into that type of thing I can see why it might not appeal.
I agree and don't agree with this. While it is drama heavy, it has far more sci-fi than BSG. We get VR, AI, smart paper, robots, Cylons, and spaceships. We also get the drama that BSG was heavy with.

I think that the major differences are that a) We know how the story ends. b) We see how the story begins.

Now, while I'm enjoying the show, most of it becomes kind of moot. No matter what Joe does now, he's going to be a well respected lawyer and judge in the future. Nothing else that happens will change that. We also know his son's path.

The main crux is if you want to know what happened to people like Greystone and how the cylons started. Seeing that we did not get much mention of the one god in BS9, we can make other assumptions there.

Watching something you already know the ending to is a tough sell, but it's also something that I'm still buying.

I enjoyed this first episode back - to a degree.  I'm finding some of the plot and logic a bit contrived.  I like the VR stuff and want to get more back to the AI of the early cylons - like Zoe.  And, why do they never show space travel in this show?  They obviously have it.  I'll keep watching, but I think they need to pick it up a bit.

Finally checked out the latest episode (thank you Hulu!)

I liked it. I'm a big enough BSG geek to get a kick out of having the back story of the worlds and characters fleshed out.  I liked the little nods to Future BSG terms, like "boxing".

One thing that struck me though- the characters aren't the most sympathetic bunch, are they?  I like the whole Gritty, Realistic, Complex Character angle, but it would be cool if a few of the characters had some more redeeming characteristics. In BSG, Adama, Starbuck, and many of the lead cylons were flawed, but they also had a little something that made us want to like them.

I'm going to stick with Caprica, but I hope we get a little more out of the characters.

Re. The virtual reality world of New Cap City:  I actually like that part quite a bit.  I smell hints of a link to the cylon projection ability.  I also like how it seems to feed into the cylon's ability to download into new bodies.

I enjoyed the return of Caprica although I struggled to remember all the events that had happened as it had been off for a while.

Some great concepts being developed here, I am looking forward to how the Cylons develop from this point and how the virtual world is mixed up in this.

Like Eric, I'm not seeing much in the characters at the moment, the story is great, gritty and powerful but we need more character development.

I read somewhere that this season we will get more Scifi elements introduced and we will see more of the Colonies. Hopefully this will include the actual space travel! I get the feeling that if we do see this it may be more advanced tech wise than what was on BSG. Didn't they go retro at some point to minimise Cylon infiltration of their tech?

What if we get the reveal that the Cylons are actually an army of the dead? We don't know who they were because they didn't focus on the original cylons in BSG, and those that were shown were kind of Nerfed because they had their brains dumbed down. That might make the future story even more interesting if they went to war with the ghost of the people they loved.

Yep, they killed the internet and cellphones to keep the cylons away.

Dude; that would be a cool angle! :)

Kind of makes me wonder what will happen with Tamara & Zoe. For all we know, one of them may be destined to eventually be reborn as Scar.  :cylon

Pretty interesting and violent recent episode (last week's).  Kind of more of a drama than a Sci-Fi show right now.  I liked the rain atmosphere in this one and the visuals were cool too.  Very "Blade Runner" like as you can see in this screenshot below.

Not liking Caprica so far. Ron Moore is making this way to complicated and I must say I hate all the characters at this point other than Surge. Sometimes a producer can be too clever for his own good. My wife is done watching, she thinks it's too much and too hard to follow and i am borderline.

I agree. As and when this comes back over here, I'm not sure I'll be picking it up again. I intend to but it may simply get squeezed out.

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

Rico

While I don't find it too complicated, certainly not anymore than Galactica was, I do agree that just about all of the characters are not nice people.  Even on BSG many of the flawed people still seemed to be trying to do good.  I wonder if Moore is trying to show how man is ultimately bad and corrupt and this is what allows the Cylons to eventually take over?  I could see him trying to do that.  I do find the virtual world stuff and the Zoe/Cylon interaction interesting.  I hope they get back to more of that soon.

I'm not a fan of "V" world. It's a weak plot device which uses an in universe technology that seems light years ahead of where this society seems to be. If Morre can't keep someone like Jamie engaged, and she liked BSG, then he's loosing the casual viewer and as a sci-fui fan, he BARELY has me still. I'm not finding the story compelling, just kind of contrived and nasty, the writting is and acting is blah, and it's a lot of lame drama going nowehre for me.

Rico

I don't find the virtual technology to hard to swallow.  They have spaceflight that's as easy as air travel is for us.  So they have the tech.  But, I do agree that the day to day living of most of the characters seem pretty old school compared to other things we see.  The only house that looks remotely futuristic is the Graystone place - and he's rich.  I'm still finding the series intriguing but that's mainly because I want to see where it's headed.

I agree totally. I stopped watching. It was boring me.....
Ripley: Ash. Any suggestions from you or Mother?
Ash: No, we're still collating.
Ripley: [Laughing in disbelief] You're what? You're still collating? I find that hard to believe.

I am finding this show increasingly tough to watch - and I want to love it.  Polly Walker (although I love her in other shows) doesn't do it for me in this role.  Meg Tilley as the Reverend Mother (or whatever she was called) was great though.
The Tauron mob is really cool - but it is not enough.  I hate to sound shallow, but I think they need to put some  20'something eye candy in the show.  11th graders (Lower 6th Form to our UK brethren) make me uncomfortable.  :)
