It was a great Episode last week. I like how they have handled Peter and the rest. A bit of a different perspective then I was expecting.

"Fringe" finally returns this Friday (1/13). I guess Joshua Jackson wasn't too pleased by some recent statements by a Fox chief exec. I'm wondering if this might be the show's last season. Read on....

There may be infinite parallel universes, but there's probably not one where Joshua Jackson was happy about Fox chief Kevin Reilly's statements about Fringe yesterday.
For those who missed the bombshell, the Fox chief declared "we lose a lot of money on the show. But with that rating on that night it's almost impossible for us to make money on it. We're not in the business of losing money. We need to figure out if there's a [deal with studio Warner Bros. that] will make sense or will this be it."
At the network's party on Sunday night, the actor wasn't amused by the comments.
"He could not have been more clear," Jackson said. "He's not running a charitable foundation. And if the show is really not making money [then that should be it]. But the important thing to me is that our writers are given a chance to finish the show because it's a serialized show."

Reilly was also at the party and had a chance to clarify his statements from earlier in the day. Though he remained firm on his stance that the show isn't profitable and that studio Warner Bros. needs to make concessions for the drama to continue, he suggested that Fringe could — and should — have a legitimate ending if it were cancelled. But he made it sound like that ball is more in the studio's court.
"That's a Peter Roth issue," Reilly said, referring to the WB TV studio chief. "I don't want it to go out with a whimper. We don't want to fumble the ball at the 5-yard line. If it ends up being the last show, we'll end up doing it right."

Well, maybe if you hadn't stuck the show on such a poor night, you wouldn't be losing $$ now would you Fox. You haven't exactly treated the show very well lately...

I can sort of see how this works for the networks. They stick a show in a prime time slot on a "good" night, a popular TV night and the show does well in the ratings. They then mve said show to a quieter night or put it up against another popular show on another network hoping that the show has gained enough of a following that the ratings stay high. I guess the idea behind it is to be a new show in the good slot to increase its exposure and ratings. In an ideal world this would work and all the shows would stay popular.

The question is, are a large slice of people just turning their sets on at the "popular" time and will watch whatever is on? Is this why when a show moves its ratings drop because only the fans move with it? Seems to indicate so.

Friday night is generally where they put shows to die, especially if they're supposed to draw the 18-35 crowd.

Not when it comes to FOX. Fox had a long history of turning Fridays into a Sci-Fi goldmine. Even on other networks, Friday has often been the Sci-fi day. I agree that when you put a non-sci-fi show in fridays, expect it to die, but there are just too many sci-fi fans that have that connection to sci-fi on fridays for it to be killed easily.

Also, putting it on a Friday lowers the expectation of ratings. You are allowed lower numbers when you air on Fridays as opposed to other days of the week. There are numbers that you can get away with on that they that would be cancellation on any other day.

They still have to get the ratings and generate enough ad revenue to stay profitable - even on Friday's. Obviously "Fringe" is not doing that.

Huh, never really thought of it that way. I imagine though that they would certainly prefer that an expensive show like Fringe could garner ratings on a night other than Friday considering that ad revenues are much lower that night.

edit: rico beat me to my point. Also as the article stated, I just hope they have the time to finish off the final season (if this is the final season) in a satisfying manner. I've long learned not to count on a network to provide a time slot for an after the fact two or hour hour movie to tie up loose ends.

I sure hope that Fringe can come back for another season, but I guess those execs comments are very foreboding. Seems like there is a lot of talk right now if it will come back for another season or not, so I guess if that decision is made sooner then later, at least it might allow for a better ending.

[spoiler]So apparently the watcher is getting executed for his mistakes?? And I guess we were very wrong about the shapeshifters. I'm beginning to wonder if its a third universe at work here. Wouldn't that complicate issues. I just hope it keeps going, I think we're going to see some awesome stuff soon :)[/spoiler]

Enjoyable episode back after too long of a break. Things are getting interesting. I do hope if this ends up being the last season that they get a chance to resolve everything. There is a lot to resolve at this point too!
