Thank you, Meds! :)

For a while I was thinking we're playing "Emperor's New Clothes" here; just don't mention anything if there is nothing positive to say. I'm relieved this seems not to be the case. :)

Still, if there is that heavily mispronounced word or anything else bugging you, please don't hesitate to mention it - I strive to improve myself!

No no, I meant to comment myself but sometimes when the thread moves off the 'recent posts' list I forget about it.

Very good work. It's been mentioned before it's very cool to have a wide range of accents doing readings!

I admit I don't know much about the education system in Germany, do they teach English in schools? Do most Germans speak it?

Hi Katrin.. of course you did a great job.. I assigned you new, even longer posts to read for the next RR.

Katrin I am always in constant ore of anyone speaking a language different from their own. I wish i had the knowledge and learning capability to speak a second language. Alas I am simply a bit lazy. Looking forward to hearing your longer post, keep up the excellent work :)

Yes, English is taught in schools. In theory, every German should at least understand a bit. Talking is something else, it's not like the Benelux or Scandinavian countries where TV shows are subtitled. (People from the Netherlands often are fluent in English and German!)

I think I had five years English when I got some original TNG -  and Patrick Stewart was the only one I understood, barely.

Since then I listened to selected episodes of TNG again and again, watched English Cartoon Network, surfed the internet, listened to BBC Radio, read English papers for the UNI, watched plenty of DVDs in English, and listened to English podcasts.

Now I sometimes don't notice if a movie is German or English and can think in English. But still lack skill in writing and speaking, a year abroad would have been great.

I don't know...based on your writing in these forums I'd say your written English is just as good as most English-speakers I know!

Also while you do have an accent, I had no trouble understanding your reading whatsoever.

Yeah my husband is from Austria and speak German, he learned his English in school and spoke pretty good when we first met six years ago. And his writing and spelling skills are better then mine. It's funny he's a huge Star Trek fan but until he came to the US all his Star Trek was dubbed in German. He said it was funny hearing Worf in German as he sounds nothing like he does in English.

I've tried learning another language, my good friend Peter can speak around 6 languages (not that he's talk to you in any LOL  ) but i just can't grasp it. i've tried learning Polish, Italian and a bit of german as my podcasting chum kell went to night college to learn it but i'm afraid it just doesnt stick. Would love to hear Worf in German.

Thank you for the feedback! :)

found some Worf speaking German:
Star Trek TNG: S1E20 - Worfs Brüder (Teil 4)
The quality of the dubbing is alright, but it's so 'flat' compared to the original. 'You' is usually translated with 'Sie' (polite, formal) and not 'du' (informal), which makes some conversations slightly awkward and creates a distance between the characters that wasn't intended in the original.

Thats weird, but cool.

billybob476

I guess the weird thing to me is he doesn't sound "alien" enough. He just sounds like some German dude. He lacks the Klingon "huskiness".
