I have no time what so ever for people who say he can't be the Doctor because he's too old when The Doctor is over 1000 years old. One individual even said The Dr is meant to be young, David & Matt were cute. Good lord, please here's the door now leave.

Well, I think there are a lot of young ladies who came on board during the Tenant years, and certainly didn't leave with Matt Smith. My wife doesn't get it, she actually likes Eccleston the best looks-wise. But if that's the only reason they watch, then I guess the show isn't for them. I mean, no one was saying Tom Baker was hot in the 70's were they?

Since they have had three somewhat younger, attractive guys in a row since the restart in 2005 I can see why some people might feel like this.  Keep in mind a lot of entertainment is aimed at the 18-24 age crowd.  I would even go as far to say some of the more broad success of Doctor Who over the last 8 years or so is partly because of this.  And yes, I know there were many Doctors previously even older than Capaldi.  I'm perfectly fine with the choice, but then I'm not an 18 year old girl either.  :)

I don't think they take the casting of this lightly (obviously after yesterday's event) and knowing him a little from The Thick of It, I think he's going to be pretty great.

Cool fan art, I guess right after Regen....love the undone bow tie.

I think he's a good choice. I can't wait to see his personality. Some say there might be a darker side, which could be neat because they are times when that show had some truly frightening episodes that I loved.

The whole kerfuffle over his age seems to be centered around the [likely] false assumptions that (1) Doctor Who needs some sort of romantic tension subplot; (2) only younger people can have romantic tension, and (3) this younger, hipper audience are the ones that keep Doctor Who going.

I would love to see the stats on the devoted Doctor Who fans. I mean, catering to a younger crowd probably did help initial ratings when the Doctor Who revival started-but it was long time fans of the old Doctors that kept it alive to even BE rebooted.

It is funny how casual this 'age-ism' is accepted.  Just imagine replacing age comments with skin pigment comments...

Peter Dinklage would be fantastic as the Doctor. At the very least, the need to have him on an episode.

Jumping back in on the age thing, it's interesting that my own little teenage bundle of joy has no interest in The Doctor as a role for an attractive man but is quite happy to see where the TARDIS takes her when the next Doctor takes the key. She's my type of fan :)

(Of course that may have been different if she were 16 rather than 13)

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

Huzzah Mike.
Now I have been scanning a few forums and Dr Who sites and i have not found loads of moaning which makes me think quite a few of these reports could be PR generated.

My son is sad that Matt Smith is leaving, but it's his first Doctor. He knows all about Regeneration because we have watched tons of the show together. I guess you never forget your first Doctor.

I have seen some of the older Doctor Who but most of what I remember was Tom Baker. And I am one season behind right now because of having no cable. I Hope that it shows up on Netflix soon!

Not sure about other people. I got a co-worker that openly says she's in love with Tennant, but she keeps saying she's excited to see the new guy. I'm guessing she doesn't care about the age.

Then again she does have the TARDIS painting by Van Gogh on her leggings. That painting is everywhere! :P
