So I'm thinking of starting a blog. I'm planning for it to be about new media. I'll be writing some opinion pieces on events around new media (such as netflix launching in Canada, Blockbuster going into bankruptcy protection, issues around podcasting and vidcasting, features on different podcasts and overviews of different podcasting networks, technology developments, etc)

Not really sure what prompted this but I figured I'd give it a go. Does anyone have any recommendation for hosted blogging platforms? I'm leaning towards Blogger at the moment. Also any advice on writing in general and blogging specifically would be awesome :)

Awesome.. would love to read your thoughts.. my vote is for Blogger/Blogspot it's simple and easy to use (not that you need simple.. computer guy). They also how allow you to really customize your site. I've had mine for years and love it.
of both??

Cool. I want something simple for the moment just so I can get rolling. If I keep at it then I may look at a more complex solution, don't want to get bogged down in details right at the beginning!

As for blogging depends on what kind of blog you are going to do.. is it going to be industry base. like taking about geeky techie things, movies, TV shows.. stuff like that.. or is it going to be more personal about what you did today and you thoughts about things.. or a combination

I'm aiming for my opinions on the space and issues concerning the space.

To Be honest, even if you get your own domain name, and some space on a webhost, You can have a blog up in a few minutes. It only took a couple hours the other day to get Ricks MW-Orbit online so to say, as a lot of the webhosts have great control panels that make installing things like Wordpress a matter of a couple clicks.

Interested to here your thoughts on Netflix. I looked at the canadian site yesterday, nothing much there yet, doesnt seem worth it right now for the library they have available to us canadians. Not even worth the month free preview.

Used Blogger way back in the day.  I tend to like Wordpress a lot currently.  If you ever want your own site Joe, just let me know.  Cut you a good deal and it's always fun to have your own domain name.  :)

I know with Blogger you can actually point another domain at it. But I'll let you know Rico :)

Did you do any work on Frogpants.com?

Awesome Joe go for it. Would live to read your thoughts :)

Surely this should be a podcast? That's what his community is so good at, after all. ;)

I know it's unnusual here but I don't have a podcast of my own.

haha I figured I'd start off easy.

EDIT: Also, I'd venture to say a podcast about podcasting is a bit too meta for me at this point :)

Not yet.  Scott is kind of notorious for being slow at getting going on things - sometimes.

Ah, I only ask because the layout looked familiar.

Sweet, though I suggest Wordpress myself, it has an app for the iPhone and stuff like that ;)  And it's a great website, but I hear Blogger is good too.

Can't wait to read to it.
