House fire!

A neighbor of Lynn's brother had their house pretty much burn down last night. From the little I know, the people were away on a ski trip so thankfully no one got hurt. But the house is pretty much gone now. No idea of the cause or anything. But here's a picture my niece posted up on Facebook of it. The house is across from their backyard. Scary stuff.

oh my, that sucks. I can't even imagine. What a bummer. I'm glad no one was hurt, but all their stuff. ugh.

What a thing to come back to. On vacation, having a great time and you come home to nothing. I feel for them. I hope they can get some help and their insurance will get with it and help them get back on their feet soon.

You should see something like that from the inside some time. I was working a structure fire once, 2nd floor landing of an old 2 story Wisconsin farmhouse. Fire had a pretty good hold on things, someone shouted, I turned slightly, and went right down the staircase, the hard way. Ever have one of those moments where time seems to slow? This was one of them for me. I hot hard, knocked the wind out of myself. THe backup entry crew was on the ball though and dragged me out quickly.

I know the feeling, brother. I was a volunteer firefighter for five years and have seen lots of great fires.

I've heard there is a good deal of the structure standing still now, but it's looking like a total loss. Very sad.

Looking at the photo I'm kind of wondering what the FF is doing on that end of the house if he isn't providing protection for the home next door. The fire is already vented from that end and to me it would make sense to come in from the opposite end with some positive pressure ventilation and force the heat and smoke out the end of the home on the left of the screen to minimize the damage. Of course it's easy to say that based on the photo and I don't have all the info that the incident commander on scene would have.
