Tim, all joking aside, what does your resume look like?

Again, decent I suppose. Although maybe you could clarify that?  I'm not sure if you mean visually or content wise.  I can share a public version via dropbox on the forum if you want a look.

All the above actually. I'm pretty good at fixing resume mistakes and making them "hire worthy". If you want, you can email me a copy (strictly up to you) and I'll take a look. I've helped thousands of people get jobs. (Ok, maybe dozens, but at my age, it's all the same! :) )

I do all the hiring at my job.  I can tell you that I sort through all of the applicants by first reading the cover letter.  If it's a good cover letter, then I look at the resume.  My best advice on that is to make sure that the letter is specific to the job your looking for.  Give examples from your previous experience and how you would apply them to the specific position the company is looking to fill, etc.  I'm happy to take a look at anything, too, if you want.

I'll send you what I have, but I have never been asked for a cover letter so far.  Most of the time its just a regular application (that takes over an hour to fill out because they want to know every detail of your life -_-).

Grrr...I've been trying to get our new corporate Cisco VPN client running on my home machine all night! I really need this up an running so I can do a release on Sunday at midnight. I'd much rather not have to go in and do it at that time! I've wasted time at home every night this week dealing with this. It shouldn't be that difficult!

At the place where I work, they have filtered google search as part of their security measures.   These guys have disabled windows update and they think filtering google search will make them more secure.   Ninnies

Oh man, I can relate. At my work, they seem to be selective with their filtering. Ok, I can't access a story about George Lucas because it tags any site associated with his name as "gaming/social media/entertainment".  HOWEVER, I can access YouTube freely and get on FaceBook (never do from here though), and I can access Treks In Sci Fi...WHAT?!

weird. the filters at school screen out youtube and a great deal of google images.

Yeah, that's why I bring my iPad2! And hop on to our student Wi-Fi network, then I can access everything!! :) Mwwaaaaa-haaaa!

On something related to blocked or filtered websites, I always wonder if those filters catch domain level redirects?  For example, if you type in www.treksf.com it will immediately redirect you to www.treksinscifi.com

That sort of reminds me of an email I got a few months back from an exec. He was asking for support people to not visit external sites beyond the company benefits site. It was only directed at support people since we would have admin privileges to servers. Sort of funny on a few levels. 1) Chances are we are more qualified to determine what is an unsafe site and what is not over some of the non technical people in the company who did not have this requested of them. 2) since we work in support, a lot of time is spent searching the internet for solutions to problems, many times finding those on forums and blogs. Not being able to access outside sites would seriously hamper problem solving and client support. Needless to say this guy was ignored, and they never added any filter, so sort of made a person question the point of the email in the first place.

That is good, sure beats having to go in at that hour to perform a change, much better to do at home, as bed is close at hand after you are done :) . My company gives us laptops, so we have VPN's installed so we can work at home when needed. My company is pretty strict on what connects to their networks, so the reason they give us laptops and don't really encourage people using personal computers for work purposes.

Yeah we were acquired by a larger firm a year ago. This week we've undergone full IT integration so things are much tighter then they were when we were a small 80 person company. Takes some getting used to.

The result is in.  We are outstanding!  At last appreciation.
