Hey fellow (and...well, what's the female form of fellow??) and female Treks In Sci Fi'ers, I thought it would be fun (and a little therapeutic) to launch a new thread to sound off about your work gripes. Nothing nasty or incriminating of course! Just good old fashioned "get this off my chest" type things. No judgements, no worries about anyone sending your comments to your boss, just a free and safe place to vent. So, I'll start:
Ok, well, I work in the education field at a for profit university. My job isn't too bad, I specialize in processing Veteran's education benefits. However, my boss, and in fact, the department I work in is full of back stabbing two faces. Joyce and I just got back from two wonderful weeks of vacation. Totally destressed, feeling good. Literally 15 minutes after returning, and seeing the 400+ emails in my Outlook, my stress level jumped 1,000 points and I've had a headache since Monday. Now, the reason is because before I left for vacation, I trained not one, but THREE people to fill in for me while I was gone. Guess what? NOT ONE of them helped at all. I had dozens of pi$$ed off students all telling me how crappy I am, I don't care about them even though they're vets, telling me I need to just quit and leave...you know, nice stuff like that. When I attempted to approach one of the back-ups (just happens to be my supervisor) I got attitute "Why didnt' you take care of them BEFORE you left" HUH?!@##$#@ Well, I need my job, lucky for her. So, time to swallow my pride, and any semblence of dignity I may have, and spend long hours catching up.

Ok, who's next? Spill your guts! (Not literally, that would be gross and messy!) Al

Wow, tough way to come back from work after vacation. Not nice to hear people telling you to quit, and then to get that response from your supervisor, that would get me pretty upset.

Yesterday was a rough day. I work in IT for a IT service provider. In The morning a Project Manager told the client that I would be doing a change on Thursday night, but he failed to ever ask me. Bugged me a bit since Friday is a day off, so I dont like to work before a long weekend. I got over it, and created the change tickets for the change on Thursday evening. A little while later a co worker in an other area told me he should be doing the change, as it is his teams responsibility. I was a bit upset about this, as I had spent the last 3 months fighting to get some software installed, as there was a huge memory leak. The vendor was no help, and in the end, I figured it out on my own. I had to go build 3 other Environments which I did. Originally my co workers team was supposed to do it, but they did not have any interest, and the Project Manager and Architect were interested in getting it done. The change on Thursday is pretty simple and sort of finishes everything off. Just bugged me that I did all the heavy lifting on this software install and support, on a software platform I don't even support. And once everything is done, the team that was supposed to support it comes in at the last minute. So I was a bit upset that I was told to step aside and was no longer needed.
So with a bad mood, I had to go to our daily team meeting. I am on a team that has people from across the country in the team, and each day everyone talks about their accounts. So I am on the call listening to some guy go on and on about some account I don't work on. They go through every account, but not the one I work on. They had done this last week as well, so I thought at the time, maybe it was just a mistake, but now I get the feeling that the person running the meeting is not interested in what is happening with the work I am doing. I was probably more upset because of the early issue, which made me boil over on this snub. I got off the call, and I deleted any future meeting invites to this meeting, as I have now deemed it a waste of my time to listen to others if I am not going to be afforded the same courtesy.
So in a bad mood, I move onto my next project. I am supposed to setup some jobs to move some log files from one server to another for analysis. Last week I had put in a change to install a FTP client on the server. I got a reply back that it was not needed, as they already had something on the server. I said fine, I can work with that. So on Tuesday, I had sent an email to our server admin and architect about more details on the FTP software. I got a rude email back from the architect on why am I wanting to do something. I was put off, as the software they installed, I had never heard of before, no one had told me about it, and I was just asking for some direction on where I can find some info on how to use it. So I was pretty upset, as I felt like our architect made me look like some sort of idiot, over some software I had never heard of before, and no one had ever told me anything about, but I was supposed to know how to use it.
So all these little things led to making the day pretty miserable. I guess I should be fortunate it was nothing worse.

you know, a work rant section is a great idea. somewhere to spill your guts (i'll never get over that..... ;D )

i'm sorry to say that i don't have much ranting that needs to be done, but i think there should be a limit on how heavy backpacks are allowed to be. walking to and from places with 25 lbs. isn't as easy as one might think.

Dude, what do you HAVE in that backpack? I know the human head doesn't weigh that much, so besides that, what else? :)

Jeff,
Man that sucks. I hate that whole lack of communication thing. Especially in an information tech company! Keep on swinging dude, someday you're bound to connect! :)

Actually I don't have much to rant about for work these days.  Things pop up now and then but nothing major.  The biggest thing that seems to happen is having to do other people's job and bird dog a lot of working going through the "system" here.  But most days it isn't too bad at all.

My work rants can be epic so this may have been the worst or best thread you created Al.  ;).

But as I'm not currently working, I have none.  I'm not even sure why my apps are being rejected at this point.  My work history is decent and I have no prior problems with the law and I'm in an area where businesses should be used to students, yet I'm running head on into brick walls for simple jobs like Target customer service or even on-campus jobs.  I haven't been given any interviews at all and some apps the website rejects on sight!  So idk.

It hasn't been fun.

Tim, all joking aside, what does your resume look like?

Again, decent I suppose. Although maybe you could clarify that?  I'm not sure if you mean visually or content wise.  I can share a public version via dropbox on the forum if you want a look.

Content and layout... Fran has received resumes handwritten on lined paper scrunched up with coffee stains on them :)

(I am not implying your looks that way)

All the above actually. I'm pretty good at fixing resume mistakes and making them "hire worthy". If you want, you can email me a copy (strictly up to you) and I'll take a look. I've helped thousands of people get jobs. (Ok, maybe dozens, but at my age, it's all the same! :) )

I do all the hiring at my job.  I can tell you that I sort through all of the applicants by first reading the cover letter.  If it's a good cover letter, then I look at the resume.  My best advice on that is to make sure that the letter is specific to the job your looking for.  Give examples from your previous experience and how you would apply them to the specific position the company is looking to fill, etc.  I'm happy to take a look at anything, too, if you want.
