Podcast # 160 – “Taking Wing”

This weekend I have a special interview podcast for everyone with two Trek book authors.

The podcast for this week is a great interview with Star Trek book authors Andy Mangels & Michael A. Martin. These two have written quite a few great Trek novels. We start out talking about their early careers and how they got into the writing business. Then we move into talking about some of their early Star Trek work, such as on various Trek comics. These two have had a hand in writing quite a few comics as well as novels. They especially had a lot of work doing the “Deep Space Nine” comic series. It seems they were given a lot of freedom when writing these books. Later, they started to team up and work on various full Trek novels. They have partnered up for over ten years on various books. The main book we discuss is their “Taking Wing” novel which we read recently as a forum book club entry. I spend some time asking both of them questions submitted by various people on the forums. We go into some pretty deep discussion of the diverse crew aboard the Titan ship with Riker in command. They share a lot about their reasons for giving the ship such a unique crew. I really liked hearing their reasons and take on this. I also ask them about whether there will be more Titan books and if Wesley Crusher will ever make an appearance in the books as a member of the crew. We also get into discussing some of their “Enterprise” books such as “The Good that Men Do.” This sounds like a great book about a different take on the ending of the “Enterprise” series. I plan on picking it up soon and giving it a read. We wrap up the interview talking about Star Trek in general and their early days when they were just simply fans of the show. I want to thank both Andy & Mike for taking some time to sit down and discuss their work.
