A great Next Gen episode is up for this weekend’s podcast. But first I cover some general news and information. The T-Shirts are in, all packed and will be mailed out this Monday. Thanks again to all that ordered one. I share some Trek oriented audio clips from the very fun & geeky series, “The Big Bang Theory.” The most recent episode had many Trek references in it. This show airs on Monday nights on CBS and every geek should be watching. Not a lot of news on the Trek movie this week, just post production continues and JJ Abrams is very happy with the special effects he has seen so far. This looks to be the most expensive Star Trek film ever produced. We should get plenty of eye candy come next May.
On other Sci-Fi news, the “Iron Man” movie is just a few days away from premiering in the States. This looks to be a lot of fun and very exciting to watch. Once this movie comes out, the summer of comic films and other geek favorites like Indy will be in full gear. I’m also continuing to really enjoy “Battlestar Galactica.” This is currently the best written and acted series on TV – even when compared to all of television and not just genre TV. At least in my view it is the best thing on and impresses me week after week. It’s going to be very hard when the first half of season 4 is done and we have to wait for the second half to get done.
The majority of the podcast this weekend is covering the TNG 3rd season episode, “Hollow Pursuits.” This fine show introduced all of us to the character of Reg Barclay. He is somewhat shy and not your typical perfect Starfleet officer. I find it a welcome change to see someone a little more normal like you and I on the ship. Barclay of course has an addiction to using the holodeck in this episode to escape from his troubles. This sets up some very funny moments and uses the crew & actors in new ways. Even though Barclay is somewhat shunned by the crew at first, he works through some of his issues and eventually uses his vivid imagination to help save the ship. Counselor Troi especially tries to help Reg out and offer her support. Of course she is a bit shocked when she discovers her alternate self on the holodeck dressed up as a Greek goddess. There is a nice message in this episode too that is especially relevant today with more and more people using the internet and games to run away from their lives and problems. It is important to learn moderation and not let these things consume you. We will get to see Reg in future episodes of Trek and even in Voyager too. Dwight Schultz does a great job with the character and makes us all really like and feel empathy for him. A wonderful episode to cover and we also get a new song from the Moyer’s this week too.
I didn’t have enough time for a collectible this week, but will cover one next week related to Harry Potter. I hope you enjoyed this week’s podcast. Tune in next weekend when I will be looking at the great Sci-Fi series, “Babylon 5.” until then, take care.
