This weekend I do another full episode commentary on a nice Deep Space Nine episode called “Melora.”

Another busy week for me. I think I’ve got my new PC running pretty well, especially related to audio and recording the podcast. I hope all sounds good this week. I start off the show with a quick recap of the recent Motor City Comic Con I attended yesterday. Saw some fun things and met some celebs and a forum member too (hi Mr. O). It was a good time. I then relate a bit of news and play a short excerpt from a recent interview with William Shatner. He is going around promoting his new book, “Up till Now.” For a man reaching close to 80 years old, “the Shat” is still going strong. Click the link HERE to see more of this CNN chat he did. I also vent a little on CBS and their bonehead decision on canceling “Moonlight.” This new series won a People’s Choice Award, was always winning it’s time slot on Friday nights and was a show with a lot of potential, good actors and lively writing. If you want to view the last, sweet scene of the series between Mick and Beth then click HERE. I also cover a couple more fun Sci-Fi TV themes this week. One from a slightly older series but that featured an actor that went to star in a later Trek series and one is from one of my favorite SF/Fantasy type shows of all time.
Then I move on to this week’s big topic and commentary on the episode, “Melora.” This is a wonderful episode from early in season two of the show. It focuses on a Starfleet Officer that comes from a low gravity world. This makes the gravity on DS9 very hard on Melora. Bashir creates a special chair for her and the station tries to make her feel welcome. There is also a nice romance in this episode between Melora and Bashir. Star Trek has always tried to face things like handicaps head on and show that in the future these problems will still exist to a degree but people will still be able to actively take part in anything they want to do. The actress playing Melora Pazlar (Daphne Ashbrook) does a great job showing the pride she takes in herself and how she works at managing her handicap on her own. The interesting thing I thought about this episode is that on her home world, she is not handicapped at all. It’s only when she joins Starfleet that she has issues that force her to adapt. A great episode and I enjoyed watching it and chatting about it for the podcast.
I think that will wrap things up for this week. Make sure to tune in next weekend for a special Memorial Day edition of the show for episode # 175. Take care until then.
