Podcast # 390 – “This Island Earth” – 1206.24

This weekend on the podcast I look at a classic Sci-Fi film from 1955 called “This Island Earth.”  This movie is one I saw a lot growing up on TV and have wanted to talk about it on the podcast for some time now.  First up I cover some news and other stories.  Make sure to check out Wil Wheaton’s new webseries called, “Tabletop” where he shows us how to play some geeky games with the help of various celebrities.  It’s a lot of fun to watch and you get to learn about several cool, geeky games you will want to play.  I also talk about the new Trek fan film series called “Star Trek Continues.”  This looks to be of very high production values and we should see some video from this series in early August which I’m looking forward to seeing.  I also play a review by Joe (billybob476 on the forums) of the new book “Redshirts” this week on the cast.  Then I move on to the main topic for this week.

The movie “This Island Earth” is a classic of 50’s Sci-Fi and it holds up pretty well today.  It tells the tale of a planet called Metaluna that is at war and needs the help of some scientists from Earth (even if they don’t know it).  There are spaceships, bug-eyed mutant monsters, a pretty girl, and cool effects (for the time).  I like the way this movie sets up he premise and slowly reveals what is really going on.  There are some good actors in it and it’s one of the early Sci-Fi films that was in color from Universal.  If you have never seen this classic, make sure to pick up a copy and check it out yourself.  It’s a great deal of fun to watch and a definite classic in Sci-Fi film history.

I wrap up this week’s podcast with a look ahead and a few other comments.  Oh, and the song at the end of the podcast is “Beyond Antares” sung by Nichelle Nichols.  Hope everyone enjoys the podcast for this week.  Next week Chris will be here guest hosting looking at the film, “Enemy Mine.”  Take care until then and enjoy your week ahead.
