Podcast # 441 – Trek Music #3 – 1306.16

This week on the podcast I take another look at the music of “Star Trek.”  I first start off by talking about some general geek topics like the latest in genre TV shows and current movies going on right now.  Lots of cool stuff to watch, like the return of “Falling Skies” and “True Blood.”  I also talk a little about Matt Smith leaving “Doctor Who” as well as a few other things.  Then it’s on to the music.  The first part of my Trek music coverage this time is a look at the past with a review and commentary about the amazing 15 CD box set collection of TOS music from La-La Land Records found HERE and seen below:

This is an incredible piece of work that every TOS fan and fan of great music should own.  I play a few tracks from each season set to give you a taste of the care and quality in this set.  I can’t say enough about how great this product is and I hope you will consider picking up a set for yourself.  It costs a little, but it’s worth every penny.  Then I move on to discuss the music from the last two Trek films by Michael Giacchino.  His work on the 2009 film and also on “Star Trek Into Darkness” is really great.  It’s a different type of music for Trek but I think it fits in well with the films.  He certainly has earned a place along other great Trek composers now and I play several tracks from each soundtrack.  I enjoyed this look again at the music of Trek and hope to do this again in the future, perhaps focusing on just the music from TNG and the Ron Jones collection.  That’s all for this week.  Come back next week when Chris and I will be talking about the “Man of Steel” film along with other recent superhero films.  Take care until then and enjoy your week ahead.
