Podcast # 196 – Wet Sci-Fi

This weekend I did a special podcast focused on ocean based (or “Wet”) Sci-Fi TV & movies for the show.  I cover mainly cool TV series that have involved Earth’s oceans – which is always a great area to imagine strange things going on.  However, the first part of the podcast I discussed the recent group of Trek movie photos that showed up a few days agaon online.  By now, most fans have probably looked at these photos already and I chat about my opinion of them.  The reaction to them is a bit mixed but that was something completely expected.  Personally I think it’s looking great.  I love the uniforms, the actors look good in the various iconic roles and I like the bits of the set we have seen so far.  Of course, the big full trailer should be showing up next month sometime so we should have more to see very soon.  For now, the Entertainment Weekly article can be found HERE if you want to see the pics and read the story online.

The next part of the podcast I got into the main topic – wet Sci-Fi shows.  I tried to go chronologically in covering the various shows.  I started by looking at the movie “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.”  This movie set the stage for much of went into the TV series – which I talked about next.  A very cool and fairly serious SF show from the 1960’s.  Next up I cover “Man From Atlantis” which is a personal favorite of mine.  This series only lasted one season but is a cult favorite.  Next on the list was “Seaquest” which was a fun show from the mid 1990’s.  I enjoyed the first season quite a bit, but not so much the later two seasons.  Rick & Nathan Moyer chimed in her with their thoughts on this series too.  Then it was on to the short lived series, “Surface” from just a couple years back.  A cool series that made me very sad when it was canceled – especially after a big cliff hanger ending.  The last little show I looked was only done as a pilot episode for the series, “Aquaman.”  This was a cool pilot from some of the same folks that worked on “Smallville.”  Again, a missed chance for a cool new series.  And that pretty much wrapped up my look at “Wet-Sci-Fi.”

I wrapped up this week with a quick review of a neat new mail away collectible that I recently received.  It’s from Hasbro and is the Ark of the Covenant from “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”  It’s a neat little mail away toy and you just have to purchase some Indy figures and send in the form with some postage money.  Click the picture here to see more views of it in my gallery.

That was it for this week folks.  Tune in next week when I will be covering the TOS episode, “Court Martial.”  Take care until then.
