Podcast #985 – “Vartok Experience” – 2603.22

This week Vartok is back with a guest podcast. I’ll let him tell you all about it.

During the 1990s the Las Vegas Strip re-imagined itself to become a more family-oriented vacation destination by rebuilding the hotels and casinos into mega-resorts with more theme-oriented attractions.  Once such example was the MGM Hotel which added a $100M MGM Grand Adventure Park.  Downtown Las Vegas, located about 4 miles from the Strip, saw that 70% of Vegas revenues were going to the Strip and decided to hold a contest for ideas to bring more attention to downtown businesses.  The top concept was to build a full-scale Starship Enterprise as an attraction, but that idea was voted down by the Paramount CEO at the time.  However, the group proposing the Starship Enterprise pivoted to creating The Star Trek Experience, located in the Hilton Hotel near the convention center.  The Star Trek Experience opened on January 3, 1998 to much fanfare.  It came to have two major attractions: The Klingon Experience, and Borg Invasion 4D, along with the Promenade, The History of the Future Museum, and Quark’s Bar and Grill.  By 2008 attendance had dropped to the point that The Experience was sadly closed on September 1, 2008.  This podcast covers the history of the Star Trek Experience and relates what you encountered by participating in this unique and immersive experience.

Big thanks to Vartok for another cool and fun podcast. I’ll be back next week with a new show. Until next time stay well and safe out there!
