New Trek Game trailer from Gamescon

A brand new and very cool trailer for next year’s big “Star Trek” adventure and action game is now available for viewing below.  This game is set in the “JJ Trek-verse” as setup in the last feature film.  It looks like a lot of fun and cool action and hopefully some great game play elements too.  I’m looking forward to seeing how this all turns out.  We really need a cool & fun Trek game to play once again.

Complete 15-CD TOS Music Box Set

A very cool box CD set collection is coming from La La Land Records featuring just about every bit of music recorded for the TOS TV series.  This 15 CD box set will be on sale this fall and is a must buy for my collection.  I can’t wait to listen to some of this music in it’s pure, remastered form.  Here is the press release about this awesome, upcoming musical collection.

COMING SOON FROM LA-LA LAND RECORDS
STAR TREK®: THE ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION

Burbank, CA — La-La Land Records proudly announces its forthcoming release of STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION, a limited edition 15-CD box set, showcasing all episode scores as heard in all three original seasons of the landmark sci-fi television series STAR TREK (1966-1969). This special collection of ground-breaking, iconic music, from one of television’s most acclaimed and beloved series, has been newly remastered from studio elements and features hours of stellar material previously unreleased in any format.

Original series composers Alexander Courage, George Duning, Jerry Fielding, Gerald Fried, Sol Kaplan, Samuel Matlovsky, Joseph Mullendore and Fred Steiner are all represented in this deluxe collection, their historic work meticulously assembled, restored and remastered to ensure the finest presentation and sound quality possible. A 100-Page CD Booklet, featuring exclusive, in-depth liner notes from film music writer and Star Trek historian Jeff Bond, complements this attractive set, which is housed in a hardcover slipcase.

The collection is expected to be released in late fall 2012. It will be a limited pressing, but the total number of units to be manufactured has yet to be determined. You can help the label decide how many units will ultimately be pressed by visiting www.lalalandrecords.com now and signing up for the STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION MAILING LIST.

STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK COLLECTION is licensed by CBS Consumer Products and produced in cooperation with GNP Crescendo Records, the longtime home of pioneering classic Star Trek television and film soundtracks. GNP Crescendo’s Neil Norman has allowed for episode scores previously and exclusively released by Crescendo to be newly expanded and remastered for this box set, in order to make the collection as comprehensive as possible.

This release marks the kind of authoritative collection of original Trek series music that fans have desired for decades. “For 45 years, those like me who love this music could only dream about having it all,” remarks album producer Lukas Kendall. “This is the major, historical piece of sci-fi music, television music and pop culture music that we have always wanted to release in a definitive form for the collector.”

“A majority of the music featured in this set has never been released,” adds Executive Album Producer and La-La Land Records President MV Gerhard. “Of that unreleased music, there is a fairly large percentage that no one has ever heard because it was written and recorded for the show, but never featured in the episodes.” Regarding some of these previously unreleased tracks, Album Music Editor Neil S. Bulk comments, “No original music from season three, apart from the main title, has ever been released. It’s really distinct and definitely Star Trek… It’s what people have always wanted.”

“The original show was very theatrical,” says Trek historian and liner notes writer Jeff Bond. “So the music reflected that. It was huge and very expressive and thematic. And that makes it very exciting to listen to apart from the show.”

The original Trek series scores team with action, adventure and drama, but they are also infused with deep emotion and the greatness of the human spirit. Such characteristics have kept these richly orchestrated tracks vital and relevant decades beyond their original recording. “Trek was always about the human condition,” remarks Co-Executive Album Producer and La-La Land Records VP, Matt Verboys. “And the scores have that in it and I think that’s what has made both the show and its music timeless.”

“Star Trek: Phase II” – relaunch video

The long running Trek fan film series, “Star Trek: Phase II” has released a short new video showing their new actor playing Kirk.  Brian Gross now plays Kirk who was played by series creator James Cawley.  The video shows the Enterprise being refit and launching on the next “phase” of it’s continuing mission.  This is very cool to see how they are moving forward in the timeline towards the ship and events we saw in The Motion Picture.  Also, there are still some Cawley/Kirk episodes to be released but this gives us a glimpse of things to come for this cool fan film series.  Go HERE to learn more about the series and get new updates direct from the source.

“Star Trek Continues” – the Beginning

The new fan film series has come out with it’s first vignette of footage.  This series stars Vic Mignogna as James Kirk and it picks up right at the very end of the 3rd season TOS episode called “The Turnabout Intruder.”  They recreate a little bit of the end of that classic episode and then move forward with the story.  The production values are very high and the fan series looks to be a fun one to watch.  The series also features the son of James Doohan (Chris Doohan) playing his father’s part of Scotty on the show.  Very enjoyable start and I look forward to seeing more from the cast & crew over at “Star Trek Continues.”

TNG – Season One now on Blu-Ray

We finally have after all these years the first season of “Star Trek – The Next Generation” on Blu-Ray.  It’s been a long time coming and a ton of work has gone into remastering these episodes by going back to the original film negatives and piecing the episodes back together.  New visual effects had to be added as well.  The result is a stunning presentation and I eagerly look forward to the other six seasons too.  One thing to note, there have been reports of some issues with the 7.1 sound mix in several of the episodes.  You can read a review and comments about this issue HERE.  But if you want to purchase your set, head over to your local retail store or Amazon.com to pick up your Blu-Ray set today.  View a trailer for the set and a review of it in the video clips below:

Robert Orci talks next Trek film

The last couple of weeks have seen a lot of rumors and speculation about the next “Star Trek” film – due out in May 2013.  I am trying to be patient and hopefully we will get some official news about the main villain and maybe even a title for the film sometime soon.  I had been hoping to hear some official news from Comic Con last week but that turned more into a rumor fest and a bunch of misdirection I think.  So, I thought I’d share a recent story and interview that Trekmovie.com did with one of the writer’s of the film, Bob Orci.  We get some pretty good information here and I think Bob is trying to set the record straight.  So, read on…

Orci reveals Cumberbatch is canon character but not Mitchell + much more

TrekMovie.com: A couple of weeks ago you were on a radio show and you confirmed that Benedict Cumberbatch is not playing Gary Mitchell in the sequel. Then last week Karl Urban says he is playing Gary Mitchell. Both can’t be true.

Roberto Orci: All I can say is that when I did that radio interview I had just been doing 22 hours of press. I had just got off a flight from New Zealand…

TrekMovie.com: Nice callback, but are you sticking with your original comment and it isn’t Gary Mitchell.

Roberto Orci: I would say that I never lie. While Karl tests all those hypo spray props on himself [laughs]

TrekMovie.com: Another thing Karl is saying is there is some footage being released this weekend. Do you know anything about that?

Roberto Orci: No. I would love to see some.

TrekMovie.com: For the last movie your first full trailer with new footage was withQuantum of Solace which was in late October of 2008. So following that pattern should we expect the first sequel trailer sometime this fall?

Roberto Orci: Yeah. Marketing plans, especially for the second time around, get a little more clear. You know you want a certain amount of time for an audience to be aware of what is coming up. So certainly fall at the latest for starting to role this movie out.

TrekMovie.com: Have you guys picked a name for the movie.

Roberto Orci: No, but we are down to the final list.

TrekMovie.com: Is having “Star Trek” as part of the name a variable?

Roberto Orci: Only one or two of the titles on the list do not contain it. For the most part all the titles we are considering do have Star Trek in them, but just to get crazy we need to consider crazy things.

TrekMovie.com: So how long will we not know who Benedict Cumberbatch is playing? How long will you guys try to not talk about it?

Roberto Orci: For as long as we can because of our belief that one of the fun things about Star Trek that distinguishes it from other franchises is that the story turns. It isn’t just the spectacle of Star Trek, not just the explosions and the battles, it is the plot. That is why we are so protective of plot and character with this particular franchise. In others that isn’t the case but in this one we can preserve the experience for some people of not knowing exactly until we get there. Will we succeed in keeping it under wraps? Probably not, but we will try it.

TrekMovie.com: OK, I want to try and get something out of you that is actually new about the movie. Kind of like you did on the radio show but I will name a guest actor in the sequel and you will say if they are playing a new character you created or one from the original Star Trek canon.

Roberto Orci: OK, I’ll play.

TrekMovie.com: OK let’s start with Alice Eve. Canon or new?

Roberto Orci: Canon

TrekMovie.com: Noel Clarke?

Roberto Orci: New

TrekMovie.com: I assume that also goes for Nanzeen Contractor, who plays his wife?

Roberto Orci: Yes, new.

TrekMovie.com: Peter Weller

Roberto Orci: New.

TrekMovie.com: Joseph Gatt

Roberto Orci: New.

TrekMovie.com: OK and the big one, Benedict Cumberbatch.

Roberto Orci: Canon.

TrekMovie.com: Can you give me a status update on post-production. What is happening in July.

Roberto Orci: Trying to make each sequence and trying to make it work. We have two brilliant editors working simultaneously with JJ going back and forth. So get these sequences working internally and then we will string them together to see how they work as a whole. But first it is, don’t try to cut the whole movie, it here is a sequence so where does that start and where does it end? Do we have a little piece of the movie that is totally working. We attack it modularly.

TrekMovie.com: So music is still far off I know, but when does the sound work start,  does Ben Burtt, he’s back right? So is their work still in the future?

Roberto Orci: Still in the future. You don’t want them to waste their time for things that may not end up in the movie. So sound design, anything like that. But ILM is in there dropping FX in sequences as we go. There are things we knew would be in there since the beginning and they have had a nice long time.

TrekMovie.com: When do you think there will be the first rough cut?

Roberto Orci: Probably in a month.

TrekMovie.com: What has been the reaction from the studio so far?

Roberto Orci: It is always nice to hear nice things from the studio and they are over the moon. They were very complimentary when we wrapped and some said they thought it was better than the first one. But you know they want to encourage us.

TrekMovie.com: Sure, but this is their business so these are the kind of people who would let you know if they had problems, they would tell you it sucks if they thought it sucks right?

Roberto Orci: I think so. You don’t often get such well acted praise [laughs].

TrekMovie.com: What about you? What have been some of your reactions to the footage you have seen so far?

Roberto Orci: I am such a Star Trek fan that I’m not sure I would dislike anything we have shot so I’m not sure I’m a good source. I see them all in uniform on the ship and I’m like “Wow! This is great! New Star Trek!” But I’m the wrong guy to ask. But every few weeks during dailies I would see a new email chain go around with stuff like “Did you see that scene yesterday?” “Did you see Spock in that new close?” “Did you see Cumberbatch make it sound like poetry?” So to hear other people chattering about it is encouraging. And it’s big. It’s so big. It’s epic. We just really went for a bigger version than we did last time, because of the trust.

You can read a followup interview where they discuss a possible new Trek TV series and other things right HERE.

Awesome behind the scenes TOS pics

Someone has put together an amazing collection of rare, behind the scenes pictures from the original “Star Trek” series.  These are really cool to look through and he has quite the collection amassed so far.  I’ve seen some of these before but it’s really fun to look through all of these again.  He puts more up on a regular basis too.  I may have posted about this once before but it’s worth talking about it again.  Check out this great groupd of rare TOS photos over on Flickr right HERE.  I know you will enjoy them.

“Her Universe” adding a line of Woman’s Trek Apparel

Actress Ashley Eckstein who voices Ahsoka Tano on “The Clone Wars” is adding a very attractive line of “Star Trek” based apparel to the “Her Universe” shop she started several years ago.  This store started with “Star Wars” clothing for women and has grown to cover other cool franchises like “Doctor Who”, “Battlestar Galactica”, and now Trek too!  She is launching these items at the upcoming Comic Con in San Diego, but you can view the offerings right now at the link HERE.  I think this is a great idea to bring together these great Sci-Fi franchises under one shop for women to have a nice range of items to pick from.
