William Shatner recently stopped by and did a guest spot on the Jimmy Kimmel talk show. He talked about several things and near the end of the interview they talked a little bit about “Star Trek.” Bill said he thought the recent film was wonderful and he has had lunch with JJ Abrams and they discussed some Trek topics. So, who knows, maybe we will see Shatner as Kirk (or even another character) in the next film in 2012. If the right script can work him in some how, I’m all for it. Both parts of the chat are below. Enjoy!
30 Years of the Motion Picture
Today, Dec. 7th, 2009 marks the 30th anniversary of the first Trek film, “Star Trek – The Motion Picture.” I can still remember getting to the theater early on a cold night in Michigan to see this movie and was blown away at the opening sequence as I saw huge Klingon ships on the big screen for the very first time. While this may not be the best of the Trek movies, it certainly paved the way for the rest of the movies and the subsequent TV series. Who knows if “Star Trek” would still even be watched and talked about in the year 2009 if this film had not been made. It made a good deal of money and I still enjoy watching it. I think it had a lot of ambition and who could forget seeing all of our favorite characters up on screen again after about 10 years since the original TV series had ended. So look back now at one of the trailers for this ground-breaking movie.
“Star Trek” theme video mashup’s
Here’s a cool set of videos featuring video mashup’s from all the various Trek series and even one movie. New audio with new opening video sequences for the shows. I really enjoy watching these types of things and it really is quite amazing how a little video editing with some new music can change the tone of the show. I think I enjoy maybe the Voyager one below the most, but they are all good and worth watching. Take a look and enjoy a different take on our Trek favorites!
Trek Phase II: “Blood & Fire Pt. II”

The long awaited second part to the “Star Trek” Phase II Fan Film production episode, “Blood & Fire” has finally been released. It’s taken months to get all the effects and everything done on this latest production from James Cawley’s crew over at the Phase II studios. The first part was very interesting and we get to learn quite a bit about Kirk’s nephew, Peter. This series of fan films has always been my favorite and they do a great job of capturing the feel of the original series and also giving us things we never got to see in the past. The sets are incredible and detail is amazing. Each episode gets better and better in terms of production values and they have many more episodes planned. Below is a trailer for part 2 and links to where you can find the episode and download it. You can find a detailed review of the show HERE.

More on “Star Trek: Online”

A lot of information has been coming out during the last couple of weeks about “Star Trek: Online.” This Trek MMO by Cryptic has been worked on for a long time and the end seems to be near. It is due to come out on Feb. 2, 2010 right now and an open beta will happen also in January. Many new features have been added to the game and you will be able to explore your ships and look around the bridge and other key areas. The game seem to be shaping up nicely. You can read more about it HERE and view these cool new videos from the game below.
“Star Trek” released on Nov. 17th

Last spring’s hit movie “STAR TREK” will be out on DVD & Blu-Ray formats on November 17th. There are multiple editions and versions of this coming including: Target’s DVD inside a model ship, Best Buy’s insignia badge set and Amazon’s pewter Enterprise set. Of course, you first have to decide whether to buy the DVD or Blu-Ray version – or maybe multiple versions! I’m very tempted to jump into the Blu-Ray camp for this movie as I have been holding off so far. There are ton of extra features on the Blu-Ray set, and I want to watch it all. There is also an excellent breakdown of these features and more at this link HERE, including a nice review and discussion about the movie and the home video release. I’m great looking forward to sitting down next week sometime and watch the film in the comfort of my home with a bag of popcorn next to me.
Deleted “Star Trek” Klingon Scene
A deleted scene from the upcoming release of “Star Trek” next month has found it’s way online and was seen on TV recently. The scene shows Nero after he has been captured by the Klingons and is being questioned about his knowledge. Fun to see and would have been cool to have in the film but I can understand them cutting this part out due to time and it wasn’t crucial to the overall story. But now you can enjoy it below or on the DVD or Blu-Ray sets due out in November.

Well, it’s looking more and more likely that we won’t be seeing “Star Trek” back up on the big screen until probably the summer of 2012. It was hoped at one time to get the next movie out in 2011, making only a two year gap between films. But due to a variety of reasons now, it seems we will have to wait until 2012 to see the young Kirk and crew back out in space again. Read on:
Earlier this week TrekMovie reported that, based on the Paramount’s release slate and the schedules of the filmmakers, the chances of a Star Trek sequel in 2011 were shrinking. Now comes the first (sort of) confirmation of this, with comments from screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman made at the Screenwriting Expo held in Los Angeles this week. More details below
Star Trek 12 in 2012?
The comments come from a brief interview with ComingSoon.net, where Roberto Orci noted they are still in research mode, but regarding the timing he stated:
Orci: We think it’s going to be a 2012 release, but I’m not sure.
His writing partner went further noting:
Kurtzman: Originally we thought we were going to have to have the script in by Christmas, but the release changed so certainly within the next eight months I’d say
This comes as no surprise, as noted in articles recently at TrekMovie, Paramount already have four ‘tentpole’ releases lined up for the Summer of 2011 (Thor, Captain America, Kung Fu Panda 2, and Transformers 3). That summer only has a couple of open weekends, with the rest full of major films, including films from the Spider-man, Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter franchises. Plus both the film makers, and the film stars have very busy schedules, with their 2010 plans filling up quickly (especially Chris Pine and JJ Abrams).
A two year gap, while not uncommon, is still a short time frame between franchise films. Three out of ten of the Star Trek sequels had a two year gap(Star Trek III , Star Trek First Contact, and Star Trek Insurrection). Most of the rest had 2 1/2 year gaps or longer, with the longest being 6 1/2 years (between Nemesis and Star Trek 2009).
Increases chances of Abrams directed sequel
In addition to giving the team more time to prepare the film, 2012 also increases the likelihood that JJ Abrams would return to direct. In his interview with TrekMovie in May, Abrams made it clear that he would not want to direct two Star Trek movies back to back, preferring to do something in between. In his Q&A last week, Abrams stated that he hopes to direct another movie in 2010 which he is writing now. That film can be his ‘in between’ film, allowing him to return to Star Trek in 2011.
