This weekend on the podcast I do something a bit different and try and cover a pretty big topic. The show is all about the “Alien” movie franchise. The main focus being the first two films: “Alien” and “Aliens.” First, I cover some things about upcoming TV series – some returning after being gone during the summer months. Lots of great stuff coming this next week or two on the air, including the return of “Heroes” and “The Big, Bang Theory.” I’m looking forward to both. “Fringe” is now back too and “Smallville” and “Dollhouse” start later this week. So, plenty of good stuff to see. Also, the forum members only contest winner is announced on this week’s show. Congrats to the winner and thank you to those that entered. I also comment on the latest talk about what might be in store for the crew of the Enterprise in the next Trek movie. Sounding pretty good to me right now.
Then, it’s on to talk about the “Alien” film franchise. This set of movies started about 30 years ago back in 1979 with the first classic film by Ridley Scott called “Alien.” A true classic in the realm of Sci-Fi/Horror type films, it holds up very well to this day. The cast is excellent and was fairly unknown at the time which makes it even more perfect and well done. The suspense and gritty space drama of this film is extremely believable and has rarely been matched again. I really enjoyed talking about some little know facts and behind the scenes things about this great film as well as it’s sequel about seven years later, “Aliens.” The second movie is very different than the first, but still very well done under the direction of James Cameron. This one is much more and action film with still many scary sequences in it. I especially like the relationship between Ripley and Newt, the little girl she rescues. These movies also set the stage for many strong, take-charge action heroines in the decades that followed. Another cool movie and fun to talk about. I only briefly mention the other films in the franchise, both due to time issues and also they are not nearly as good as the first two movies – in my opinion. I want to thank those who sent in comments for the show this week, those were great and really helped round out the podcast.
Make sure to come back next week for a vidcast about the various “Star Trek” fan films over the years. Take care until then.

Rico,
I enjoy your podcast but you might like to know that James Cameron did not direct Rambo-First Blood Part II. He also did not direct First Blood- Rambo Part I. The IMDB says that:
Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985)
Director:
George P. Cosmatos
Rambo: First Blood (1982)
Director:
Ted Kotcheff
Thought you might like to know. Keep up the entertaining shows,
JD Fine
Yep – you are correct. Cameron wrote a draft of Rambo II, he didn’t direct it.
An excellent podcast. It’s so long since I’ve seen any of these films but the show bought back a lot of memories of them.
I think I’ve largely blanked out the original – too frightening and while I watches the third, I wish I hadn’t. I’ve seen nothing released since then in this series although the future one could be tempting.
Thanks.
