Podcast # 275 – Michael A. Martin Interview – 1004.18

This weekend on the podcast I have a special treat for all of you.  I had a chance to interview and chat with “Star Trek” book author Michael A. Martin.  Quite awhile back I got to talk to him and also his writing partner on some of the work he has done.  He has a new book out called, “Star Trek Online:  The Needs of the Many.” I got a chance to read a preview copy of this book and really enjoyed it.  Mike and I talk for quite awhile about this latest novel from him and other Trek books he has worked on.  We go into a lot of the writing process and how it all works.  I think we also spin off into quite a few other areas as well, even other franchises and movies too.  I had a great time just having a nice, relaxed conversation with someone who gets chance to play in my favorite “universe” and make a living writing “Star Trek” books and other things too.  I think all of you will enjoy what Mike has to say and what topics we cover.  I even got a chance to ask him some fun questions towards the end of the podcast like, ‘what’s your favorite Trek series’ and so forth.  I want to thank Mike for taking the time to speak to me earlier today.  And I urge everyone to check out his new book and others that he has worked on HERE when you want something fun and cool to read.  Next weekend I’ll be covering the Voyager episode called, “Alice.”  Talk to you again then.

Hi Rick; I’ve enjoyed your podcast for a number of years. Very entertaining and informative, and I’ve listened to your “spinoffs” too.
I follow the News and politics of the day, every day, because it is important to be informed. When I listen to “Treks in SciFi” and the sports podcasts that I subscribe to, it is to temporarily escape from reality.
Fox News provides my TV news- I do not watch other sources because of bias. Example: Chris Matthews (bastion of journalistic integrity and ethics) actively campaigned for Obama, and was so excited when Obama won, he said “I feel a tingle up my leg” (google it). Fox News has much higher ratings for good reason.
Your recent guest, Michael A. Martin, took a cheap shot at Fox News. This is common amongst hollywood/Main stream media/ entertainment world people.
Now, I honestly do not care where you stand in the political spectrum, but I did notice that you did not comment to him or point out that your audience surely contains many people that don’t appreciate such commentary.
This may or may not be a trivial issue to you, but it is not to me.
Please respond. I really would like to know what you think.
Thank you for your time. Al Luglio

  2. Al,

With regards to Mike’s Fox News comment I frankly don’t know the situation well enough to comment on it. I probably wouldn’t comment even if I had a viewpoint because I try very hard to avoid certain subjects on my show. However, you must keep in mind that it is simply Mike’s viewpoint – which he certainly is entitled to. Most shows that have guests on tend to have one of those disclaimers saying “the opinions of the guests are their own and don’t necessarily reflect,…etc.” Maybe I need to make one of those for my podcasts? 😉

  3. Rico,
That’s a very sound policy. Politics should not intrude on every facet of our lives. There should be political safe zones where people of varied political stripes can just go and relax.

I’m curious why anyone assumes that criticism of Fox News — an organization that has been caught red-handed spreading lies and distortions on numerous topics, such as President Obama’s eligibility for office and the contents of the recently passed health care bill — is somehow political. Don’t we all WANT honest news, as opposed to the political propaganda that Fox spreads? Doesn’t basic civil discourse depend upon factually correct reportage of current events (again, not a political thing), and honest evaluations of history (also nonpolitical)? Or is criticism of Fox News automatically considered political because Fox News has such an obvious right-wing political bias? The simple fact regarding Fox News (and this has been supported by unbiased academic research) is that people who rely on Fox News for basic news and information are less well-informed than those who use other sources.
